I didn't find that bigoted. I'm not offended by it. I've also LIVED in Asia for more than a year. *I do think part of his opinion is off base. Come to Korea, man, I'll show you how those "passive" women really are. *snort. The creativity part though... Yeah, it's sad. Many of the waygooks (foreigners) here comment on how terribly sad it is to watch the creativity be destroyed in the people around us. It is a common topic of discussion. When conformity is the highest measure, imagination and creativity are sacrificed.
From what I see, Pompeii is talking about his personal experience with certain women. Let me say it in reverse:
The Latino men I've been with are pretty much steeped in machismo. Love the dominant kind of confidence that comes with that.
Not a thing bigoted or racist ... just personal experience and recognition of a cultural norm.
There is also a certain truth in cultural differences. There *is* an Asian attitude. Asian people *do* tend to seem more passive. I can't get my Asian students to answer a dang open ended question I ask. They just don't speak. They are not assertive. It's a cultural thing. And it's REAL. My Latino students on the other hand wouldn't shut up. Another cultural thing. (I'm not going to go into the actual reasons for it, but suffice it to say that I've had lengthy discussions with many people from these two cultures about their behaviors and norms).
There is a difference between personal experience and bigotry, between recognizing cultural norms and trashing them.
As for the Columbia study, frankly, I think there is a difference by *age*. Men who were soldiers in Korea or VietNam I would think would have a higher preference for Asian women because those women are linked with their "coming of age" or a very traumatic time of their lives. We tend to be more open to change / suggestion during traumatic times. I would expect the preference but don't have any statistics. However, we do often link things like that.
And before you all flame me, I was tested in university, and I was an anomaly. In acceptance of others I was off the charts. Literally, my number went beyond the highest setting. My teacher was sure I'd done the numbers wrong but after checking it 3 times, he told me I was the most open minded, accepting person he'd ever met or would ever meet. He was over 70 years old and had over 40 years experience in the field.
At the end of the day, there is a difference in cultures. There just is. We can dance all around and say we are all the same, and that is a crock of nonsense. There are also personal preferences. Who cares? We like what we like. We like it because we like the norms, the culture, the smell, the way skin looks, whatever. I like men who use bifocals. I think it's hot. Who the fuck knows why? I don't. Does that make me bigoted? No, just weird.
