I see his point.  I personally have always enjoyed the idea of having an answer without having to meander through numerous webpages to get it.  At least with a magazine format you generally would get the best or "concrete" information you want.  You could even entertain the idea of taking it one step further and creating a "BDSM Bible" or something grand.

Even though magazines are progressively dying out, there will always be those loyal types that simply enjoy the old methods.  A "nothing beats the classics" vibe, I guess.  You also factor in you can read a magazine in your bed without the deceiving "laptop" attempting to incapacitate your ability to procreate.

UGH! I must have hit wrong button on my reply.......let's try this again.........

I agree that the internet is a good but overwhelming source of information. Condensing this information into a magazine will be most helpful.

What type of procedure do you plan to use with the product reviews? How about the photography? Will you be looking for others' viewpoints on them?

Years ago I used to read the 'Penthouse Forum'. Listening to your plans for your magazine, I find it much more intriguing than the 'PF'

What is the underlying lietmotif for this magazine?  If it is purely titillation like the Penthouse Letters that some other poster mentioned, I suspect that you'll probably be buried by the wank blogs and such.  If you are going to take the educational route, like Sandmutopian Guardian or Prometheus, you will probably have a better chance to develop a following, but you are going to need some skilled and experienced writers.  Given what I've seen on this and other sites those are going to be pretty hard to come by and to attract them you'll need the kind of credibility I don't see in your profile.  Using words like "true" in relation to submission and "dominate" as a adjective just won't fly.

Your best approach, if you are serious, would be to attract an associate editor or two who could act as front people in contacting the writers.  I understand Janet Hardy has retired recently.  You might want to contact her.

Since you seem to be planning to be purely online, a choice I regretfully accept as reasonable in this day and age, you might want to include video such as interviews with people like Jay Wiseman and Dossie Easton.  This will require a somewhat different skill set from your average writer to create an interesting interview that can be enjoyably viewed.  Print journalism interviews don't translate well to the video world.

You'll also have to think carefully about advertisers.  The first approach of most sites is to accept any place that will pay however just a quick glance at the advertisements here on CollarMe shows how that can damage a publication's reputation.  Advertisers that use fake pictures and overblown promises may attract the unwary but create a suspicion of everything connected with them on the part of thinking viewers.

@ JohnWarren
LOL, I know I don't look like the best educated person to run a Magazine and to some point I agree with you, I am mostly a behind the scene type of person. I am a Think Tank, a ideal man. There are a lot of things I can't do, But I know how to make things better. I am and never will be a "writer" but I know what makes for good reading if that makes sense. For as advertisers I know there are tons of crap spam type ads out there. So much to the point most ads on web pages never get clicked because they are looked up on that way and yes they can hurt the rep of the web site. I know the site owners do it because they want the cash, but like I said before that is not my motive for this Magazine. I would rather put in extra hours at my current shity job to fund this Magazine than run a ad for a Dick grow cream.

The overall theme of the mag will not be on the "smut skin mag" theme, and it will not be a straight informative mag. I want to walk that line in between. I guess it will be a lifestyle mag and the reader can take it how he/she wants. Will there be graphic photos and content? yes. Will there be informative material like howtos for newbies, the need of aftercare after a intense scene play, and info on being safe when meeting new playmates yes. The theme of the mag depends on the reader. Hell I recall when I was a kid I use to use the Sears catalog as my porn of choice, lol the underwear section did wonders for me as a kid not able to get my hands on real porn

@ sirssubk2008
For as product reviews I will pick at random X amount of products or as I am being active on CM and other sites I will pick up on top mentioned items and start researching them. Get some company background info talk to a few people who have actually used said product them write a unbiased review of that product or ask the customers to submit a lil review. Once the magazine gets established my goal is to have the rep of the mag so good that companies will look at the reviews of their product form our mag as a stamp of approval and would request us to test future products on a beta level.

For as print, It is dead but that is my ultimate goal to bring this to print. There is nothing like a well put together print magazine.

Just googled Janet Hardy and she is out of my league $$, This mag will be scratched together and as time goes on it will attract more well known writers and editors etc...

Once again i think you all for the input, I know I don't have the funds to hire a dreamteam but I know that there is raw undiscovered talent out there. And if i can pool a lil of this talent together we can put out a quality magazine that you will enjoy reading. This feedback is good cause you will keep me at a certain standard where i know I can't just put out anything and call it a magazine. you guys have standards and i will do my best.

I wouldn't personally go for bloggers.

Reekon's looking for free content. Other than design, I'm not sure what reekon's bringing to the table, or really what he's wanting from CM.

There are plenty of good, stable writers who blog, dc. It just takes a competent editor to figure out what's good. Established, experienced BDSM freelance writers won't write for some start-up without a payoff. If there's no money in it, either the author has to be devoted to the concept, or the people producing the magazine.

January

Hi January

I completely understand what you mean by stable writers having their own blogs. My opinion is though that the best way to get writers is not to go by the blogs (sorry if that wasn't clear). I think that you have hit the nail on the head about being devoted - there are ezines out there that have devoted unpaid workers and they work because of the devotion... and without that, it won't float long enough to get readership.

Hi dc,

I was suggesting that reekon should use material from writer's blogs / essays to republish in his magazine, since he won't have any money to pay anybody. He's not going to have great authors beating down his door and submitting new stuff. He'll have to do research, find interesting material already on the 'net, and approach the authors himself.

reekon:

You should google "John Warren" + dominant. John Warren is one of the people who responded to you in this thread. He is one of those established, well-regarded lifestyle writers you could only dream to have on your team. He gave you some wonderful free advice.

yes i have seen and read his reply and would love to have him onboard but like I said most will want cash and money is not there and won't be for awhile. Finding writers who have blogs going will be my best bet. for the fill of the mag, but I will still need writers to do interviews and goto and cover their local community BDSM munches and other things. I know this will be hard to put together but it can and will be done.

I like your planned approach for the product review.

Walking the line between "smut skin mag" and "informative" will be difficult, but with the ideas you have proposed so far, I can see that you are devoted to this and your gusto to make it work will prove beneficial, both in getting the mag started and bringing in the set of advertisers that you seek.
