Dick Gregory passed away last night.
Dick Gregory was a living legend and I don't see anyone around these days, close to filling his shoes.

Dick Gregory was one of the last surviving activists from the Civil Rights Era.

One thing I always admired about Dick Gregory was his great speaking ability and the way he was often able to deliver serious messages, along
with a sense of humor.
Dick Gregory was a comedian and activist, who broke down racial barriers in the 1960's, and used his humor to spread messages of social justice and later
on nutritional health.

RIP Dick Gregory

A man of great courage, certainly.

Yay! 2 comments!

Remembering Dick Gregory

I have been listening to some of his commentaries/speeches on you tube, amazing how what he said 40 years ago, is
still very relevant today.

He can't be replaced, I would settle for someone close.

He had a full life, it's just sad that there is no-one even close to him these days.
Comic trailblazer AND civil rights activist.
It's the end of an era.

He indeed lived and walked the walk.

RIP Mr. Gregory

I think a lot of Americans have no idea who he was.

We, as a group, aren't very smart about history.

Even recent history.

I agree, Dick Gregory is well known in the Black community,
and with a certain "crowd".
This is not a really diverse crowd around here.
I grew up listening to him on the radio.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

A legend ? Not so much. I remember him as just another liberal who heaped praise on Cesar Chavez and Fidel Castro. He should have moved to either one of those to shit hole countries and croaked there.

We can agree to disagree.

I can't think of any human, leader or person on earth, who I ever agree with 100%.

He might have been misguided once in a while, or taken a stance on issues, which I did not agree with.

His legacy and body of work for over 50 years speaks for itself.

Lets also not forget that he fathered 11 children and was proud of the fact that he had nothing to do with raising them. A real stand up guy.

I just read an article written by his oldest son and he was involved
in raising his 10 surviving children, one child passed away at a young age.

He was a stand up guy.

You have your truth and I have mine.

Hopefully, you have SOMEONE who walked this earth that you admire.
We don't have to admire the same people.

He basically let his wife and 11 kids to fend for them selves. That is not a stand up guy.

I have read that he was a good father.

Surely you can read articles that support BOTH of our points of view on the internet.
I doubt that he was a Saint, but I have read that he was a great dad..

We obviously disagree and this is really not going anywhere.
So rather than go back and forth forever, as many do on here.
I will bid you goodnight.

I guess we have a different view on what being a good father is. He wasn't even close.

That article proves my point. Saying this was a dysfunctional family is being kind. It started with the so called dad.

As usual, this could go 40 pages back and forth.

I never said he was father of the year, many leaders/activists/etc. have short changed their families.
It is hard for a single person to make strides in the world, I can't imagine what it is like for someone with a large family.

It appears he short changed his children when they were younger, and he attempted to become closer to them when they were older.

You can continue to repeat the same mantra over and over.

I am impressed that he attempted to make amends, for his short comings as a father, during the last years of his life.

Despite "how you feel", this will not ruin his contributions to society or his legacy.
That is what counts to me.

RIP Dick

He was a good comedian and spokesman for civil rights. He financially but not emotionally supported his children. He still gave more money to the NAACP and civil rights causes.

But to me, everything was too much black & white for him, even blaming whitey for Ali's parkinson's syndrome.

Of all leaders, it was Ali who gave much more than Gregory, supported his kids in every way and gave himself his nervous problems by fighting too long.
