The Ottoman Empire declared a holy war on the West when they understood they had made a fatal error in joining on the side of Germany and Austria/Hungary and when they had early aspirations of gaining territory from the crumbling Russian Empire.
The Ottoman Turks were the landlords of the Middle East. They did not represent Arab Islam.

And btw, the U.S. fought not one battle against the Ottomans in WW1. The 18th Century battles with the Barbary Pirates were technically with the Ottomans but only remotely. Sadly under-educated moron.

One more salient indicator of Bosco's ignorance when it comes to matters pertaining to the Middle East and/or Islam is the idiotic attempt to cast the Palestinian/Israeli conflict as a religious war between Christianity/the West (represented by Israel) and Islam. The conflict is not a religious one, it never has been nor will it ever be one. At the heart of the conflict the issue is land, who owns it, who controls it, who gets to use it and Zionism's refusal to share the land or accept the indigenous population.
Indeed the notion that the conflict is primarily religious only became tenable in recent times. Twenty or thirty years ago, before the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, long before Hamas, AQ and IS, just about everyone agreed that the conflict was about land, except the Israels who have always sought to cast the conflict as an existential struggle. These Israeli attempts were meeting with more and more rejection, so the Israelis tried to attach their aggression and expansion to the broader West's struggles against Islamist fundamentalism, exploiting the opportunities offered in the post-9/11 world.
If you tried to cast the conflict as a religious one back in those days before the rise of Islamist fundamentalism, you would have been laughed at - with good reason. These claims are no less laughable today. The conflict pre-existed the rise of lslamist extremism by almost half a century. In fact many believe that Israel's aggression and abuse of Palestinians is one of the prime causes driving the rise of Islamist fundamentalism. Arguing that the conflict is a religious one gets the cause-effect chain back-to-front, about as diametrically wrong as it's possible to be - though who would expect less of Bosco and A'ness?
The Isreali Palestinian conflict is about land, about indigenous rights to self determination and their legitimate occupancy of the land that is called Occupied Palestine.
