this is a question about religion and/or spirituality. do you think you should share the same religious beliefs and values that your Dominant or Master holds? could this be a deal-breaker for you, or do you think it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things?
if you currently have a Dominant/Master, do the two of you share the same religion? if you are of two different belief systems, has this ever caused any problems? do you think certain belief systems are just bound for incompatibility, i.e. Christian+Pagan, Atheist+Muslim?? just a current curiousity of mine...

It's really of little to no importance to me that Master and I share the same religion or spiritality. He respects my beliefs, I respect his; that is all that matters.
quote:

Yes, though he also follows Druidic Lore and I do not.
quote:

No, I do not believe that the actual belief system makes for incompatibility; but rather that the two people who practice the religion DO.

My grandfather was a preacher; yet my grandmother was agnostic. They were together for almost 53 years. Once again, it comes down to compromise and how much a person is willing to compromise for another/each other

It depends on what you want out of the relationship and what you are willing to compromise. How important are your values and beliefs to you and will the person respect them? Only you can decide this for yourself. I made the mistake of compromising  my values and paid the price. Was it worth it? Yes because I learned who my true Master is and what I want in an earthly one sometimes those lessons are the most painful but most productive.

I certainly dont believe I should share the same religious beliefs, though if either one in a D/s realtionship is extreme in their beliefs it might cause problems if either tried to "convert" the other. Being with a Dom who has different beliefs to me wouldnt be a deal-breaker, provided again as long as there were no "coversions" being attempted.
My current Master believes in God, though has no particular religion. I am what I like to call a "submarine Catholic" - ie I only emerge when in trouble. My children attend private Catholic schools, I attended private Catholic schools, yet my belief that God exists is tarnished by my life experiences - the old "If there was a God then why have I......." etc. My Master believes in God, I do not, I have a religion, my Master does not - work that one out

LOL, yeah, it is. I guess I like the idea of a structured group of "do-good" people, but just dislike the whole God thing. My mother-in-law a devoted atheist once told me that she sometimes wished she did have the ability to believe in what she could not see so that she had "something' to cling to in hard times, but like many she doesnt have the blind faith it takes to believe.

my Daddy doesn't care that I'm Buddhist while he's Christian. We seem to work just fine together and our religions don't really ever get in the way of our enjoying each other.

i was afraid for a while that our religious differences would be some kind of a deal breaker - being that i'm a (nonpracticing) Pagan, and He's Jewish, but we talked through it, since the main problem would be any future kids, and we already agreed on how we'd raise 'em.  SO i suppose that the simple answer is "No." hehe.

No.

It would if his religious beliefs somehow enforced its values upon myself and what I could do if it went against my sense of self- same as anything.

Since there's a lot of variation amongst religions, I don't think it's definitive that one is against the other.  However, the farther devout you get on the spectrums, the more difficult it would become.

I do not require my slaves to hold the same views I do. I only require them to 1) be open to spirituality in some form and 2) to choose a spirituality, when they're ready, that has a positive intent. I can and would accept an Atheist if they had good moral fiber. I doubt that I'd accept someone who practiced black arts or followed the satanic church. It's not because I have some deep seated hatred of these. Instead, it's because I don't see them as having positive intent.

I know many Masters who have slaves of different religious background. For example, I know a Buddhist who owns a Druid and a Christian. I also know a Christian who owns a Muslim and someone who follows a different Middle Eastern religion. I also know an Atheist who owns a Pagan. It's an interesting world, is it not?

Prior to begging my Master's ownership I asked him if my spiritual beliefs would make a difference to him.  He said they would not.  We do have amusing conversations, however, as I was raised Catholic and he was raised Jewish and despises Catholics.  I hear about the Crusades a lot, lol.

No.  Sharing the same beliefs in title does not mean we will agree on every detail.

I don't think it matters as long as the persons involved are willing to try to be understanding and respect each other.

My Dominant is Taoist, and I am Pagan.  Although some would say they are similar, they are quite different.

It would only matter if it mattered to those involved.

My best friend is devote Christian and cannot be with anyone who does not share her views.

I am a spiritual athiest. My Master is the world's most devote Athiest.

Could I be with anyone who wasn't athiest? Unlikely, but I wouldn't allow it to be the defining criteria if the chemistry and compatability was present.

Master and i don't share the same religion - and i have to admit to not actually knowing a lot about His beliefs, He is a Taoist and i am Pagan. it doesn't appear to cause a problem and He has even accompanied me to Pagan rituals because He respects my beliefs,
Sincerely,
wench

Both my Dom and I are philisophical objectivists in our leanings towards morality- and neither of us are religious. We each arrived at these conclusions on our own, and it was a pleasant coincidence. Both of us also consider ourselves to be spiritual beings, but not adhering to the practice of any one religion.
With that said, he was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, and I as a Evangelical that was kicked out of the church for asking too many "difficult" questions. Both of us study many religions, mainly for the philosophy behind each one- and we have fantastic conversations about it with a lot of frequency.
It's my belief that being religious is great, but groups of people separating themselves out in an organized way can be chaos. Spirituality to me will always be a personal thing, and not something with which I choose to identify with a group. I also believe that things done "in the name of" a god- as interpreted by man- are dangerous things, as man can seek to understand the divine, but by definition is not on par with it.

Just a bunch of random thoughts on this stuff.

I can only answer from My personal views. I am a Christian, and since I seek one who will eventually be My wife, as well as My slave, yes it would be, and in the past has on more than one occassion been a deal breaker for that level of commitment. For friendship, not at all. I have many friends who follow differents beliefs, and I have no problem with that. (though it leads to some interesting discussions at times, it is always done in affection, and respect)
Good topic.

I view those as two separate issues. "Should" you hold the same religious beliefs .. for some people, yes, they should if their faith is strong and it will interfer with their service or dominance to have to set it aside. For others, like Himself and I, it doesn't matter.

Values are completely different. If Himself and I did not have compatible values, we wouldn't have gotten together at all.

quote:

could this be a deal-breaker for you, or do you think it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things?

For values, yes, for religion no.

quote:

No, he is Jewish and I'm not.

quote:

The only issue that ever rose up was when he forbid me from engaging in any more hooking or bell dancing which was very much a part of my spirituality. Now I express it in other ways.

quote:

do you think certain belief systems are just bound for incompatibility, i.e. Christian+Pagan, Atheist+Muslim?? just a current curiousity of mine...

I think it depends on how much your particular faith and/or beliefs mean to you. I am very Mother oriented, but Himself doesn't care as long as it doesn't interfer with my service to him.

Angel and I do not currently share the same religion, though I am more likely than not going to be joining him in his Church. I was raised jewish, I have been searching for a religion for myself that makes sense and seems to fit.  I have been involved with Pagans, the B'ahai and Catholics for most of my life. Angel is actualy the first Christian I have met.  Perhaps the Christian church will have my answers where others havent. Wether or not that does happen, he and I have decided that it isnot a dealbreaker. We respect one anothers beliefs and we agreed that even if I do not settle with Christianity as my religion, I will not interfere with his worship or beliefs.

Not necessarily

Not only could it be, it has been a deal breaker for me. I do not date Christians that go to organized churches every week, or belong to a church, or have been baptised as a member of a church.

quote:

We are both spiritual and not religious.

quote:

if you are of two different belief systems, has this ever caused any problems?

We both are open to each other's different views, respectful of them, and I enjoy listening to what he thinks spiritually, even if it is not in agreement with my own beliefs. I am a live and let live person with how other people choose to express their beliefs. We are well suited to each other on a few different levels.

quote:

do you think certain belief systems are just bound for incompatibility, i.e. Christian+Pagan, Atheist+Muslim?? just a current curiousity of mine...

I think it depends on the people involved as to whether they allow religion to be an obstacle to them. There are many types of people that I could not be with based upon their religion, mostly because their religion would demand they convert me, and that I would find condescending and unacceptable... best to avoid that if possible.
