I recently read an artcile in the newspaper about the large increase in HIV cases in older people, the over 50 crowd. I would imagine this also applies to other STDs as well. I can believe it. We oldies never had a lot of education in STDs, seldom used condoms when younger, and then many had just one partner after marriage. Now many find themselves single or experimenting with other partners and do not practice what they preached to their children. Any comments?

I am always sceptical of articles like this. Where are all these HIV infected older people? The problem is, if there happens to be 5 older people with HIV, and the next year 5 more get it, that is a large increase in a very small number. But that isn't how it is reported. HIV increased in older people by 100%! Sounds scary. That is how they do the math in these things. It is another scare tactic. I have never had any STDs and I am not afraid of getting one. And I definitely don't worry about getting HIV.

I agree proud. My ex husband is 42 and seperated from his 2nd wife. He has been sexually active since he was 14, and in the 70's STD's were not discussed the same way they are now. He moved from our home into hers (and I wouldn't sleep with him the last year because he wouldn't let go and I really needed out).

I drive him nuts asking him if he has condoms when he is going out. He *doesn't like the feel*, and I say tough shit. The children do not need to lose a father because sex was more important than safety. ::laughing:: BTW, I do it for the children, not for him. 90% of the time the man is an ass to me, and that doesn't outway the few times he is not.

Greetings,

Since this is the second time today that someone has mentioned HIV/AIDS....here is statisical information provided by the CDC. It appears that the stats are reported through 2002.

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/stats.htm#data

You can also search for stats for your state.

I don't know that this means NEW cases of AIDS/HIV. More than likely, it means that these people have HIV/AIDS and are now in this age group. There's a big difference. There are probably more older people with AIDS because the medications that are being used are keeping people alive longer. My brother is an Infectious Diseases M.D. and his practice is 70% HIV + people. They do seem to be getting older and older, but it's because they have been infected for so long. It's not unusual for people to live 20 years now with HIV.

I just looked at this again. The stats above are the ages when the diagnosis was made. Interesting. Still, it makes sense. If you subtract those ages from 2004, you would find that they line up with the time period when the epidemic hit.

Stay safe...use condoms unless you've been tested as well as your partners.

I think the whole point of the article was that many older people are not practicing safe sex becuase either they don't think they can catch anything at their age or they are very ignorant about STDs.

Those numbers seem very small compared to the population of the US.

All it takes is one... just one out of 250 million, or just one out of 250 billion, or just one out of 250 trillion... all it takes is one to move you into the small statistics group with them.

"I didn't realize", or "I wasn't aware" means nothing to the lower percentile.

To make this easier, i've cut and paste the info from the CDC, again, this is only through the year 2002- the numbers are higher now! (The reason for my edits were trying to make the Table easier to read; in terms of the exposure category, there are 3 sets of numbers: Men Women and Total- sorry if it's hard to read)

Cumulative Cases by Age

Of the estimated number of diagnoses of AIDS through December 2002, patients' ages at time of diagnosis were distributed as follows:

Age # of Cumulative AIDS Cases
Under 13: 9,300
Ages 13 to 14: 839
Ages 15 to 24: 35,460
Ages 25 to 34: 301,278
Ages 35 to 44: 347,860
Ages 45 to 54: 138,386
Ages 55 to 64: 40,584
Ages 65 or older: 12,868

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cumulative Cases by Race/Ethnicity

Estimated numbers of diagnoses of AIDS through December 2002, by race or ethnicity:

Race or Ethnicity # of Cumulative AIDS Cases
White, not Hispanic 364,458
Black, not Hispanic 347,491
Hispanic 163,940
Asian/Pacific Islander 6,924
American Indian/Alaska Native 2,875
Unknown or multiple race 887

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cases by Exposure Category

Following is the distribution of the estimated number of diagnoses of AIDS among adults and adolescents by exposure category. A breakdown by sex is provided where appropriate.

Exposure Category Male Female Total
Male-to-male sexual contact 420,790 - 420,790

Injection Drug Use 172,351 67,917 240,268

Male-to-male sex and IV drug use 59,719 - 59,719

Heterosexual contact 50,793 84,835 35,628

Other* 14,350 6,519 20,869
* Includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal,
and risk not reported or not identified.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The distribution of the estimated number of diagnoses of AIDS among children* by exposure categories follows:

Exposure Category # of AIDS Cases
Hemophilia/coagulation disorder 236
Mother with or at risk for HIV infection 8,629
Receipt of blood transfusion, blood components, or tissue 390
Other/risk not reported or identified 45

* The term "children" refers to persons under age 13 at the time of diagnosis.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Areas Reporting Most Cases

The 10 leading states or territories reporting the highest number of cumulative AIDS cases among residents as of December 2002 are as follows:

State/Territory # of Cumulative AIDS Cases
New York 155,755
California 128,064
Florida 90,233
Texas 59,772
New Jersey 45,237
Illinois 28,426
Pennsylvania 28,136
Puerto Rico 27,242
Georgia 26,008
Maryland 25,358

And while some of you notice that the populations more vunerable to contracting HIV are men who have sex with men and IV drug users, let's not forget that women may have had unprotected sex with a man who falls into one or both categories.

i work with clients now, heterosexual women and men, who NEVER use condoms nor do they tell their partners that they have HIV! (one of my clients is a prostitute). So, despite the numbers, it pays to play it safe. If you don't like using condoms, go get tested, there are now easier and faster ways of getting tested- the Oral swab tests take 15 mins.

Also, syphillis is making a big comeback as well- so it pays to know 1) your partner's sexual history and health 2) use condoms, dental dams (which cover the vagina and/or the anus) and be sure to get tested if you have multiple sex partners!

This information is based off of USA
stats not world wide.
Number of new AIDS cases: 42,745 (2002)
this will double in 2003 and quadruple
in 2004
the largest group of HIV currently is
the 35-44 group with 13%
the second largest group of HIV currently
is the 45-54 group with 10.5%
actually from the years 2002 to 2003
the 45-54 age group went down in statistics
from 11.0%
the group with the largest increase of HIV
currently is the 75-84 males group with a
jump of a .2% with all other HIV groups
statistics lowering the past two years.
These statistics the CDC feels are due
to tainted HIV blood that was given befor
The problems with the blood supplys were
corrected. Of course this too is an assumption
and it could be that the Men in this age
group choose to live dangerously because
of their late age ~smiles~ whos to say?
NOT ME!
Information was gained by My CDC monthly
medical update in hand I dont have a link
to give You to go to but Im sure if You
go to the CDC will find these statistics
to hold true.

In the United States, as many as 16
percent of every million of pregnant
women have BV. This varies by race
and ethnicity, from 6 percent in Asians
and 9 percent in non-Hispanic whites
to 16 percent in Hispanics and 23 percent
in African Americans

CLY-Chlamydia
An estimated 3 million Americans
are infected with chlamydia each
year. Women are frequently re-infected
if their sex partners are not treated.

HSV-Genital Herpes -Herpes Simplex Virus
in the United States. Nationwide,
at least 45 million people ages 12
and older, or one out of five adolescents
and adults, have had genital HSV infection.

GN-Gonorrhea
600,000 people in the United States are
infected by gonorrhea each year. Only about
½ of those infected are reported to CDC.

HPV-Human Papillomavirus Infection
Approximately 20 million people are currently
infected with HPV in the US. At least 60 percent
of sexually active men acquire genital
HPV infection at some point in their lives.
By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will
have acquired genital HPV infection from men.

SYP-Syphilis
In the United States, health officials reported
over 32,000 cases of syphilis in 2002, including
6,862 cases of primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis.

TRIC-Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is the most common STD in young,
sexually active women and men. An estimated 5 million
new cases occur each year in the 12 to 19 yr.age group.

I agree with Mistress Dread, for some people the numbers sound low. If you really think about it having unprotected sex with just one person is just like having sex with a thousand.

There has been a major increase within the younger generation as well because lack of education. Maybe it would be a good idea to start having electives in school for sex ed, with parental consent of course to not stir things up.

I think there should be a law that if anyone goes for a checkup and has a transmitted disease they should be orderd to go to some type of sex ed class. Maybey that will decrease some of theses statistics.

Isn't sex ed required in most schools? Or at least part of a health curriculum? I taught health and PE in a private school many years ago and sex ed was a major part of the course.

Sorry Dread, but the fact is, the vast majority of AIDS and HIV cases are gay men or intraveneous drug users. Look at the numbers that have been posted here from the CDC. In a country of 270 million, the numbers are insignificant. There is no epidemic in the US. There is a big problem in many other countries in the world, but if you want to believe that there is this huge danger from AIDS in this country, be my guest. I don't believe it, and the facts back me up.

Sound low? They are low. Way more people die from car wrecks, heart disease or cancer every year.
If anyone is interested in the truth, there is a great book called " The Myth Of Heterosexual Aids ". The author is Michael Femino. Not sure of the last name, but I think that is it.
It's a free country, believe what you like, but you are believing something that facts and statistics don't support.
