MadameMarque -> RE: How do you feel about BLOOD? (3/1/2007 10:00:46 AM)

Oh, blood. Yes, it is all about the intimacy and the intensity and the vulnerability, and sometimes, even about twin primal impulses – one, as the one who causes the wound, or feeds from it, or makes the wounded one suffer; the other, as the protector of the wounded, their family. Recently, I’ve been watching MARS, an ongoing drama based on a manga. There’s this moment. It’s not explicit, it just touches some things, for me. You don’t really have to know the background story, but for me, it’s part of why the little moment gets to me. The main male character, Ling, is a wild boy who is finding himself drawn to an extremely introverted girl, Qi Luo. He has a dark and violent side, but she invokes a protective instinct, in him. Another girl, much more aggressive than Qi Luo, has noticed Ling’s interest in her and is jealous. One day, coming into class, Ling leaves the other girl, to come sit next to Qi Luo, who is so painfully shy, she’s busy avoiding his attentions. She occupies herself sharpening an art pencil with an Exacto knife. The other girl comes walking behind her, intentionally knocking her in the back of the head, and Qi Luo slips and slits her finger open. Without a second’s hesitation, Ling takes her finger into his mouth, to nurse the cut. She tugs her finger out of his mouth, startled. The look on his face is one so natural, surprised at having been interrupted, and still in a certain state of mind. That look of doing something instinctual. I swear, the actor’s eyes are dilated. I find that so touching and so intimate and so very exciting. It doesn’t take much, I think. Just the right context, the right feeling, the right intentions, an intimate connection. And they show that little moment, as part of a montage, at the beginning of every episode. "Drink from me and live forever." - Camui Gackt, from the song, "Transylvania"
