Status: offline 		the state realized just how much money was being made on artifacts each year and realized they didnt have their hand in it somewhere...so now you have to buy a permit to hunt fossils...but even that doesnt get you much.....then its only permissible to keep "land finds" ..in other words you have to physically be walking by and see it. And thats no good on state lands like parks and such, and it doesnt get you out of tresspassing, and so it really only counts if you are walking down the side of the road or some other public use area....

Status: offline 		Geodes are quite interesting to have! I'd love to go hunt for some but here in Canada, geode aren't found. Yet I can take you to places to pan for gold or collect fosils until your heart's content!

Ghita: Up here it's illegal to rock hunt in our provincial parks. I have done a bit anyway, just to get a couple samples of the roch common to that specific area. Yet I know of many places to go and all I need to do is gain permission from the landowner to go onto their property. All around Thunder Bay, top of Lake Superior,  are many amethyst mines and several are open to public collecting, just pay a small enterance fee plus an nominal cost for what you keep and you can stay for several hours.

Status: offline 		ooh..that sounds fun. Down here we have coralheads in the ground. They are alot of fun and make for some nice peices. Sometimes we find artifacts made from quartz but they are usually trade peices from farther north like the carolinas.

Status: offline 		And if it's fossils you want, then I'll bring you to Manitoulin Island in Georgian Bay. All one has to do is pull over tot he side of the highway by a rock cut and look on it! You'll find fossilized crinoids, trilobytes, fosilized clams, and various others.

On a college field trip, I picked up a 2 lb piece of fossilized coral (took a Geological Engineering  Technology course)

Scifi, can you honestly rock hunt in VA in the mountains without fear of being arrested? Wow that sounds amazing. Can you dig? Or just walk along and look at the ground? What happens if they catch you? Down here on state land, like the green swamp, if you are hiking along the florida trail and come accross an arrowhead laying in the middle of the hiking trail and you pick it up, and the game wardens find you and search your bags, or they see you pick it up and put it in your pocket, they will fine you, and take your artifact, and take your vehicle you used to drive to the park, and on rare occasions they have even gone into peoples houses while they are in jail for picking up artifacts and seized their entire collections....

Luckily I know lots of family members with cow pastures on prime artifact hunting land who allow us to hunt and dig to our hearts content in exchange for a little help mending fences occasionally.

Status: offline 		Oh I want to come too. This past weekend my UM found a very cool tiny fossilized clam, both sides still together. It was just there in the rocks. I love geodes and such, we have a few out in the yard.
 
My stone is the Yellow/Golden Topaz. Its an ugly thing. My UM's stone is Opal. I love opals. She got lucky.
 
On a side note I think I have a new crush. Mr. Kilt Calender RazorJak. Would love to get a peek up his kilt. *drool*

Status: offline 		There are several areas on Manitoulin Island where one can find artifacts also. If you both ever make a trip up this way, I'd be more then happy to take you both on an expedition to Manitoulin and also the Sudbury Basin. Lots of interesting and unique geological formations and places to do some collecting without permits.

SciFi...we have been planning a vacation to somewhere in the mountains to go camping and hiking in March...if I could find a state where we could even pick things up while hiking my Sir would be happy!
