Hi all,

I need some help with physical issues.  I love to kneel for my Dom, and he loves to have me kneel, but my knees are just cruddy.  At this point, if I try to kneel for more then a few minutes, my knees hurt incredibly bad, and my back starts to give out (I not only have knee issues I'm very top heavy).  We tried a pillow, but it didn't work all that well, although maybe a thicker pillow might work better.  I suppose I could wear Kneepads, but that wouldn't look too cute.  So HELP anyone got any ideas of what I should do to be able to kneel and still be comfortable and able to continue for longer periods of time?

Thanks for any replies I may get

greetings indigo,

i have similar problems...chronic pain issues keep me from being able to kneel for extended periods of time. i haven't yet been able to find anything that really helps - pillows can help a little bit but they're just not doing it. for now, i just don't kneel upright that often...he likes it sometimes when i kneel in something more like a child's pose in yoga, and i've found that that can help take some of the pressure off of my back.

good luck!

respectfully,
annabelle.

Thank you for your reply annabelle, can you give me a brief description of what that pose is?

greetings indigo,

http://static.flickr.com/103/305127250_f8214451ce.jpg here is a photo of it; many more can be found by googling "child's pose." it can be done with the arms stretched out in front of you or back by your sides. basically you kneel with your knees slightly apart and lean forward so that your forehead is touching the ground and your back is mostly straight with a little bit of a curve.

respectfully,
annabelle.

A tri-fold exercise mat;  best kneeling surface in the world!  It may not help with ypur back problems but at least for me it extends the time I am able to kneel.

Indigo,
a few ideas you can do to help with the kneeling,
1-stretch out before extended kneeling periods including drinking water
2-do a sideways kneel, in other words you are sitting on your behind with your knees bent but sideways curled besides you.
3-don't try to do the perfect "nadu", instead be natural, if thighs parted feels better do so, if toes feel better curled under great, if you need to shift every few mins go ahead.
4-you can use a puffy exercise mat, i bought myself a chair cushion which works wonders, or a nice big pillow to place under when you kneel.
5-Watch out for kneeling on rough surfaces, hard floors, or uneven surfaces.
6-make movements natural when knees start to hurt. Go from kneel to maybe on belly for a gentle little kiss on the foot when knees start to give out, maybe teasingly roll over brushing your hair against his thigh ect......don't make focus on the lack of kneeling time...
7-please inform your owner of any problems, any aches, your medical conditions or pain you are experience. Talk to him about what he suggest as to altenate kneelings or other forms of rituals you can do for him.
8-practice, meditate, kneel, stretch and relax into the kneel

Hope this helps, at least this is what i do for kneeling

I have the following suggestions:

1. Don't rule out knee pads - maybe you can have a pair made in shiny leather
2. TRAIN! With a pair of knee caps train in your own time getting used to sitting in that position start with 1 minute and add 10 seconds per day - after a month you can sit 5 minutes! Don't hasten it!
3. Do general elasticity training - when you sit on your knees and it starts hurting, your whole body starts to tensening up - and within a few minutes you are filled with lactid acid
4. Get in a general better shape - jog twice a week at low speed but for a long periode of time (at least 30 minutes) till your whole body is thoroughly warm and you build up a good healthy sweat. Do your mild elasticity training at the end of these sessions.
5. Consider to do muscle training as well - but do that as the last thing.

When I started karate training years ago, it was the same. It's a matter of getting used to and getting a bit in shape. As westerners we are used to sit in holstered chairs - you simply have to get you body used to this new thing.

It won't take you long.

And one more thing... change your position while you kneel. If you sit completely collapsed, your blood cannot flow and you get lactic acid, so try to raise your thighs and body accordingly - sitting like a "proud" slave ;-) Keep you back straight ALWAYS!

Also you can periodically kneel the Knights' way (when they were knighted) with one knee on the floor and one foot on the floor...

But training, baby, will be a GOOD thing for you!

I have bad knees too. Have you tried kneeling where you are not sitting back on your heels but holding your body more up? Thats what I do. Although that eventually hurts too. When this happens , I switch over to sitting Indian Style cross legged in front of my Dom.

It sucks when you can´t kneel the way you Dom/me wants you too. I have a problem kneeling in a traditional way because the bloodflow below the knees stops and I really quickly start to ache. Instead I kneeled the indian way, but it wasn´t the same.

You can get a chunk of memory foam, for your knees and they will compress less which may not restrict blood flow so much.......

If the idea is your subservience, why can't you guys sit down and work out a ritual kneel and then some sort of modified ritual sitting position that displays obeisance?

Let's not get this too wrapped up in form, it is the function that is important in the end, I suspect, is it not?

Ron

i broke both of mine years ago, it's very painful to do anything with my knees, i found constant motion as in lite exercise, helps, pain Lotions like icy hot or others that work for you and have no odors, take a good pain pill before you start your activity at least 30 min b4. basically baby your knees, don't let the pain take over or you'll end up in a wheelchair

Jeez, Ron, two serious posts this morning?  What's the matter?  Got a fever?

He's right tho.  Why get caught up in form?  It's the end result that's the thing.

Drugs wearing off, huh?  LOL!  Well, "popping" by isn't terribly realistic given the distance, but thanks for the offer.
