I love that I have a new inspiration for a couple of paragraphs...
It was dark and cold outside. I'd forgotten what winter is like. I'd forgotten what cold felt like. But tonight, this last day of January, dark fields on either side, I remembered winter. I remembered the ice that clings to Mother Earth's darkened curls, the waves of snowy bosom clinging to the land, frosted air dancing before each yellow light as I pass slower and slower down the path that once was a road.
The wind blows, dunes of snow drift further and further into the road. The yellow line, hidden beneath these clumps, three dimensional art pieces of frozen earth, the yellow line.... the yellow line. Where is it? It was here, the yellow line. Where? The yellow.. ahhh yes, there - over there - just to my right it peaks from between this and then that rolling hill of white. To my left, a dune of snow higher than even the top of my car scatters snow dust upon the windshield, the glistening diamonds a prism of color as the two beams shine toward me. Where will I go? The snow drifts on the left and on the right, the lane only just wide enough for one car. Spin, the car swerving, hitting a patch of ice as lights grow larger and brighter through the fog of glistening cold. Barely passing, my fingers white against the dark wheel, the snow beast comes to my side, an inch or 3 between it and me, I move on into a darkened night, so dark. Now, only my lights spilling through the white. Is that a house? Is it a tree? There is a car or maybe a truck. I don't know as I inch degree by degree to the spot where the stop sign waves beneath Mother Nature's flapping winter coat. And I turn, the last turn, only a few miles, only an hour from my home... only a lifetime from chilling winter's silent lover - warmth.
