Oh, wow, I can't believe this one went over my head.  But I can't submit another answer, because IMHO, Google is cheating.  Wow, it's so obvious though, nice group DS

Who said you can't do research?  That's one way to learn stuff.

I google if I don't know, so I do learn.  I just won't post an answer if I had to google it.

Googling to find an answer is fine, says the OP. Most quartets would be impossible to solve without some research, and I'm all for learning opportunities!

Do we have a current quartet?

detectives?

Yup,  fictional detectives from literature.

Joe Leaphorn is a Navajo detective.  Tony Hillerman was the author.  Hiilerman was a Journalism prof at UNM when I attended there.

Travis McGee is John McDonald's detective.  Those books are violent and written in an odd, shambling style.  The Dave Robichaux series is much superior to the McGee series, but the name Robichaux was too unique.

Auguste Dupin was the original detective, in Poe's Murder in the Rue Morgue.

Irwin Fletcher is Gregory McDonald's sleuth.  He's smart, rebellious, and everything just sort of slides into place for him.  Chevy Chase managed to kill the character's appeal effortlesly in the movies.

pissthirstysub, it's your turn to pick a quartet.

You are on the right track...but it's more specific than that.
