One other thing CountrySong...if you are looking for a rooster, go for the Leghorn as well. They are mean lean egg machines. They are also as mean as hell, and i am not kidding.

The last one i had hated everyone but me. I would pull up in the driveway and he would cluck his ass over to the car and wait to be petted. Anyone else would have their ankles pecked if they dared to get out of their cars.

I named him Rambo

I used to have to escort people into the house! I would meet them at their cars, yelling "Heel, Rambo!!". I loved the look on their faces when they were charged by an overgrown chicken.

'Course...i am rotten that way.....

Highlands are just beautiful beef cattle.
All chickens are evil. Stupid and hateful, beady eyed pecking machines.

Oh and Country, the way around the problem of them becoming pets starts with their names. Beef cattle are not named Elsie, they're called Hamburger. Swine are called pork chop. And so on.

But although I can see the value of having layers around the place, they're still chickens, still evil, beady eyed, brainless things that live to peck people.
Can you tell I really don't like chickens?

I'm that way with geese. Those hateful things just love to attack my heels, legs, and... um... other places whenever I show up. Chickens, ducks, and even sand hill cranes I can deal with, but geese... nuke 'em all I say.

Swans too. My mother in law always had a pair of pinned swans on her pond. They would attack her when she showed up with the food. One person had to swing at them with a broom while she quickly poured the food out and fled.

I always liked the term, "Freezer Pets" myself!

It might also be possible to buy from the 4-H kids that show their animals. Many of them are already de-nutted (for the males) and it makes it easier on the kids if they do not have to kill and eat an animal that they have spent so much time with. Some areas even have a "share" program thing for some of them. I am getting rather out of my depth here, as I just go to one of the people that raise them and arrange for it to be dropped off at the butchers where I will pick it up once it is in those nice packages.
