I'm going to answer in the past tense, since my most recent D/s relationship ended a few weeks ago. I loved her (and love her) very much. A good D/s relationship is at least as deep and as powerful as a good vanilla relationship, and can be, in my opinion, more so. A good D/s relationship also requires all the same things as a good vanilla relationship, and significantly more. It was definitely not just for the sex, any more than any other good relationship is just about the sex. If you don't care about the person and you just want sex, you can make your life much simpler than if you're looking for a really genuinely good person that you can respect. It's not the same, though, as I'm sure you know. As a disclaimer: she was the one who decided to end our relationship. I can't imagine that would change my answer, though.
