DominaSmartass -> Unmentionables: Will someone please explain it to me? (5/14/2007 7:00:47 PM)

Ok, so I've been on the boards here for a few months and I do know what people are referring to when they say "unmentionables" or "UMs" but for god's sake, why?? As far as I can tell, the definition of the words is as follows:

–adjective
1. not mentionable; inappropriate, unfit, or improper for mention, as in polite conversation; unspeakable.
–noun
2. something that is not to be mentioned: That subject was classed among the unmentionables.
3. unmentionables,
a. undergarments.
b. (formerly) trousers or breeches.

Yet we constantly are using the word to refer to our children.

Why can't we just say children, kids, offspring? And don't tell me it's cause it's against the CM guidelines to as much as mention those words cause that's ludicrous. I even read the TOS to see and the only thing I could find was that it's not allowed to mention adult activities involving kids. So why all this codeword BS? Anyone?

Chirrenges.

Little Ones.

(Blame the feds).

We're on a "sexual" site.

Talking about children assumes the latter.  (Regardless).

(It's a legal thing).

its the word we use for children here on cm because of some weirdos that lurk about . Also just a thing we like to use here.

Less attention brought to this site the better..some agencies look for buzz words and children are one of them...the reason these buzz words are looked for upon this site is because of its adult nature...and shoot! we all call our um's by all sorts of names..rug rats..the causers of grey hair..the wrinkle upon my forhead etc...so actually in the scheme of things it is what it is and not something to take offense at ..Tempting

I say! Good thing I stumbled across this. Where I grew up -and I have heretofor understood it as such- "unmentionables" refered to ones privates[:-] So, now I understand a couple of things I didn't understand around here...

And for the record, no, I do not have any children -that I know of, anyway...

Less attention brought to this site the better..(Excellent point...as a life long (recovering) Republican {did I just say that????} it would be safe to say....whatever freedoms we may have had as children....are rapidly dissapaiting)

(Geeeeeeeze...I can't believe I just actually said that).

because its sort of cute to do so.....? sort of poking fun at the rule-makers perhaps?

m0rgan -> RE: Unmentionables: Will someone please explain it to me? (5/16/2007 3:29:09 AM)

it is really very simple! there are people that trawl the net (authorities in cluded) using all the euphemisms for offspring they can think of. i doubt anyone here wants any of those people visiting! search engines work in many ways, often using parameters not fully understood by many, but broadly speaking, less numbers of times a particular word is used on a site, the lower down the list of results a site will appear in searches, by less normal people than us, until we are below the radar.
to know more about searching, and search engines, and refining search results, look up "boolean terms" (as written and within quotes) or;

boolean+search+terms

as written, no spaces, include the plus sign. then use those principles for searching the web. bear in mind that search engines keep lists and addresses of those people that search on particular things, and feed them to langley or even more sinister people. just info, 2 cents worth.

Yes, well, this is just one of the things about the CM forums that drive me up the wall. We're just not allowed to discuss our little legtumors at all. No funny story swapping, no parenting discussions, no estatic " my son got all A's on his report card" posts... and no venting about how much they drive us nuts!

Shoot. Look, I'm really not one to constantly prattle about my brats, but they ARE the biggest part of my life, yanno? It's like... most of know of know in detail about some people's political stance ( and sex lives), but we know less then nothing about their family lives. Sure, it can be great fun to talk talk about whippin' and whatnot but sheesh...

Okay, rant over. =)

mnottertail -> RE: Unmentionables: Will someone please explain it to me? (5/16/2007 7:55:47 AM)

Stella, I think that indeed it is over-reaction on CM's part, but since most here are volunteer (hell maybe all of them) it is better to be safe than sorry. People can only volunteer so much time in their life and there are enough fisticuffs without areas of interest having to be watchdogged.

While interestingly enough the TOS does not forbid the mentionioning of your little cherubs or monsters as the case may be, it has been clearly stated that younguns may not be the focus of the thread, so I wouldn't be surprised to see M11 bop along here with a 'watch it, kids' pretty soon.

Hello Stellaby Starlite :-)

i can see your point but i know personally, when i come here it is not as a "mother" and rarely does a thread inspire me to speak as such. i have a sister and several vanilla friends that fill that void and when i am here - i am just me ~

imthatacheyouhav -> RE: Unmentionables: Will someone please explain it to me? (5/16/2007 8:00:44 AM)

I always thought "unmentionables" was refering to unders......LOL i guess that could explain my confusion

It commonly was used by women to refer to "undergarments"...ie. panties, bras and the like in the "olden days"....: ) Actually, I use "unmentionable" to refer to my ex-boyfriend...or "he who shall remain nameless" when I am talking to certain people....LOL
