Elorin -> You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 7:27:51 PM)

...the restaurant?

This is something of a rant, something of a preference statement, something of a question.

Do other dominants get frustrated when a sub is capable of finding a BDSM oriented personals site, registering and opening a profile (assume that if there is no profile I wouldn't have talked to them), and found you and engaged in a dialogue...

...but then asks you to give them driving directions to the restaurant for a first meeting?

This drives me insane. The ONLY time I found a reasonable reason was when a German speaking sub had JUST moved from Germany and still thought in German - even so I found the excuse rather lame.

Mapquest boys and girls. Mapquest. Google the restaurant name. Ask for the street the restaurant is on, maybe...you can find the rest with mapquest. Get a cell # in case of emergency but hey...at least if you call and you are lost - YOU TRIED!!

I say this after two very pleasant encounters today, one female, one male, subs who said "I can find the directions online" for upcoming meetings...but countless encounters of potential meetings where even when given the street address (#, street, city, and zip) a sub wanted me to provide driving directions - without even TRYING to find directions via a map or online first.

Sometimes mapquest and yahoo maps are wrong. My home address actually shows up a few blocks away from where it is and appears as the address of a company. I have known many many many people who have gotten lost when not asking for help with directions. Of course it is good to use mapquest to start with, but if you are unfamiliar with an area it is just good sense to ask for a little extra help like landmarks and such.

I have to chuckle because your post reminded me of when I first started with this stuff and was talking to someone.  I didn't get the whole 'give the submissive tasks and see if she obeys' yet, I was that new.  So, he's telling me to get him directions, and I'm like, what? He can't frigging find his own directions?  I just assumed he was incompetant, and didn't really want to deal with that.  Chances are he probably had the skills to get the directions but...lol

Elorin -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 7:38:30 PM)

PassionateTulip
I can understand that mapquest and yahoo maps aren't always right. But there's a huge difference between "is there anything I should know about getting there" from someone who has looked up the directions or is looking them up, and someone saying "what are the directions" ten seconds after you have decided on the location of a first time meet.

I agree that when someone is coming in from out of town, I take that into consideration. But when I'm meeting someone who lives in town and has lived here for a few years, I expect them to expend at least a ~little~ effort.

But then, it's my rant, and it might not bug you ~NEAR~ as much as it bugs me.

Oh, of course! If they demand you find directions for them that is a bit nuts. There is a huge difference between "what area of the city is that in" and "what's your opinion on the best way to get there?" from "what are the directions?"... So, I totally agree! *smiles*

LadyPact -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 7:44:31 PM)

I am hideous with driving directions of any sort.  It's one of the reasons I don't do it Myself.

I'll give you the finding the restaraunt bit.  Personally, I prefer Rand McNally, because they tend to be more accurrate.

A side note, one casual play partner I had once literally had an address (to his home) that did not exist.  It was a small sub-division that was small enough and new enough not to have a listing.  I had to meet him at a nearby store and follow him there.  True story.

kitriana -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 7:46:26 PM)

tell them to use google maps. it is much more efficient that yahoo or mapquest. it also self corrects the address..and all you have to do is type in the restraunt name and it gives you all locations possibly near you. very handy.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 7:46:57 PM)

LMAO...I'm glad I'm not alone in this topic.

I give the street name, street #, town and zip code, most of the time they find it.

Perhaps the excitement has gotten to them and they lose all reasonable thoughts...hehe

Damocles809 -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 7:48:08 PM)

Elorin, were you on the phone with them?  Or did they email you asking for directions?

If it only takes a few seconds to give directions on the phone then that sounds pretty reasonable.

If they took the time to write out an email, and ask for you to write one in return, then yeah, they're not too bright.

spanklette -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 7:51:49 PM)

Actually, I'm one of those people that asks for directions. I'm aware that mapquest exists, but most of the time it doesn't offer the best route. In fact, it's fairly useless in our neck of the woods...the streets change names 3 or 4 times in a mile, then there's Old Blah Blah Rd. and "New" Blah Blah Rd. itself. I prefer directions, and generally, will offer them.

This has to be a first: A woman complaining about a guy who does ask for directions.

LOL.

Speaking of google maps and mapquest, here's a fun thing to do. Try putting in a starting location as somewhere in the United States and the ending location somewhere in Europe. Then read the directions.

Elorin -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 8:26:53 PM)

Most of the time it was a matter of talking in a messenger, or e-mails. Not talking on the phone.

I don’t know if there are others like me, but directions, even simple and clear directions get jumbled up for me.  Sometimes I wonder if it is a form of dyslexia.  I have to concentrate very hard to correctly take a left or right turn.  Even with a co-pilot directing me I can screw it up.  I was driving a friend to pick up his car in a part of town I was not familiar with.  He told me to turn right at the intersection and I flipped on the left turn signal.  He yelled “You’re just fucking with me, is that it?” and I almost cried because no, my brain does not automatically compute left and right.  I have learned some helpful ways to compensate; for instance, wearing a bracelet on my left wrist helps me focus ‘this is left’, etc.  Even with written instructions, I can read the word ‘right turn’ and go the opposite way.
I have to plan; take a practice trip the day before, leave early enough so that ‘lost time’ doesn’t make me late.  I can get lost even in a familiar area if it is a different time of day, or traffic is more congested than usual.
And believe it or not,  I can get just as lost driving back home.  .
If someone says 'you can't miss it' thats a sure bet that I will miss it!
It is a glitch in my brain that has nothing to do with my intelligence.

Does anyone use a real map anymore?

Do you use the L on the left hand formed by forefinger and thumb to remember it's your left?

I don't have complete trouble with directions but I do NOT instinctively turn in the correct direction when told left or right - I have to think about it. Drill for AFJROTC was hell for me, and I hated being in the middle, as I'd fuck EVERYONE up.

Not being good w/ directions doesn't mean you aren't intelligent, and I don't want people to think I think so. Just venting a frustration...

What in the fuck is wrong with asking someone for directions?....Let's say I was meeting sub poopsy McRootsalot and we were meeting in her neck of the woods...So I ask "where exactly is that located?" if she gave me any of the lip that I have heard out here I would tell that fucking cunt to go fuck herself...But of course she wouldn't be allowed to achieve orgasm.

I hadn’t thought of that one, will keep it in mind, Thanks!]
I did not take your OP personally, I know that my ‘glitch’ frustrates my friends and I always warn someone new if I am meeting them somewhere.

Elorin -> RE: You found me online but you can't find... (5/15/2007 8:41:44 PM)

There is nothing wrong with asking for directions. However, taking the time to look up the directions shows an ability to think for yourself, initiative, and web-savvy. All of which are traits that tend to be pleasantly viewed by dominas like myself.

Waving the white flag. I have a HORRIBLE sence of direction. How bad, this is sad, I am going on a 'retreate' {thats my story and I'm sticking to it} this weekend, and I have been about half way to this particular place before, so am I gonna get lost, possibly. How about this, I went to the boat races a few weeks ago, I was given VERY specific directions, and I STILL called 4 times because I was kinda sorta lost {I had not gone far enough and the light was out because someone hit it, so I lost a landmark}. This was not a lifestyle meeting it was a vanilla meeting, so I don't see a difference. I used mapquest, and the stupid thing gave me directions that led me to a dead end.

Wanna know how messed up directions from google are?! Try to get directions from 'New York, New York' to 'Paris, France' and look at the 23rd direction. Now, by the same measure put in 'LA, CA' to 'Maui, Hawaii.' Ok then, messed up.

If I am given an address, I do get on good old mapquest and on yahoo directions, I compare the 2. Thank goodness for cell phones, I call, I have no problem saying, 'I think I missed a turn or I am lost.'
