JerseyKrissi72 -> Constipation??? help. (5/25/2007 10:59:48 PM)

I am trying to figure out what went wrong with  me today...Today, I was in discomfort for over four hours and finally went to the hospital. Before going to the hospital, I did a supository to help me go to the bathroom because i had bad gas and hadn't gone to the bathroom all day...the pain went away while at the hospital and they pushed on my stomach and asked me if i was in pain and i had to say "no"...no pain...they believed it could have been my gall bladder because of where it was located- possibly gall stones.....my question is.....could constipation be bad enough to cause you pain for that long?? The reason I believe it was constipation is because it felt like my body was trying to have a bowel movement and couldn't....I have hypothryoidism which does cause constipation..any ideas??

My brother had gall stones and he was constipated for three days before he got surgery.  Have you tried chemical laxitives?  If you don't want to use medicinal laxatives, boil a tea of strawberry leaves.

I will do that, thankyou. I am now going to the bathroom and feeling much better. They did push very hard on my stomach and I had no pain. I will have an ultrasound next week and hopefully that will tell me more...always better to be safe than sorry.

Fiber fiber fiber.
Eat fiber.
Did I mention fiber.
And a ton of water.

MistressTexas -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/26/2007 2:28:42 AM)

ground flaxseed. 1-2 tablespoons per day will clean you right out.

Hi krissi.....I suffered with constipation for many years [&o] I could go 5-6 days without pooping with no ill effects, but I knew it was bad for me to go that long.

I have bran cereal and fruit, or porridge (oatmeal) most mornings now, and try to drink more water. And this is probably too much information, but since I started doing anal play I rarely suffer from constipation [&o] Thank you Master! [;)][:D]

DommeChains -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/26/2007 11:00:58 AM)

I have hypothyroidism too.  I will echo what Aileen68 said.....fiber, lots of fiber.  I use fiber capsules in addition to counting the fiber content of my food.  Try to get at least 20 grams of fiber daily from your food and at least 2 quarts of water.  You will experience some gas initially as your body gets used to the additional fiber but after a few days that passes.  I have not used a chemical or herbal laxative in years since I have been doing this.

All good suggestions above, and I'll add that taking some magnesium supplement may help, I know it has for me, as well as helping me sleep much sounder. I take one 250 mg tablet about 30 minutes before bed each night.

Yes.  Constipation can cause LOTS of miserable problems.  Chronic pain, fatigue, back aches, of course tummy aches.  I read the advice of others and here is mine:

Evaluate how much water you drink in a day before you move on to medications.  If you have problems with constipation anyway, you really need to be drinking 64 ounces of water a day (and not tea, coffee or whatever...hum...plain ol water).  A little lemon in it is ok though.

Keep in mind that we are all different and you don't necessarily have to have a bowel movement every day.  Some people go more than once a day some every few days.  You need to know what pattern is yours.  Once you determine what seems to be a "typical pattern" for you then monitor it.  If you see that you are approaching enough time that your pattern is breaking then it's time to look at chemical help.

Keep in mind there are stimulants, stool softeners, bulkers and combos of all kinds.  A stimulant does just that.  It stimulates peristalisis in your colon to help move the stool through.  A stool softener helps bring fluid into the stool to keep it soft enough to pass easily.  A bulker helps give bulk to your stool to make it well formed to pass easier.  A well known softener is Colace and Pericolace is both a stimulant and a softener.  Correctol, Exlax ete are a stimulant.  Bulkers are things like Metamucil and fibercon

So...what's all this mean?  If you are indeed having issues with constipation...figure out why (with help of your MD if necessary) and choose the best path.  Above all, Krissi....water water water.

Unintentional but still funny :-).

earthycouple -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/26/2007 5:49:23 PM)

Krissi,

I had wracked my brain since my first post to this thread trying to recall the name of one of the most gentle and natural aids for constipation...and several hours later my brain kicked in...Senna.  The name brand most seen is called sennakot but any Senna product (wal mart brand for example) is as good.  I always suggest this to patients first once it is determined they need some "aid".

TribeTziyon -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/26/2007 5:51:30 PM)

Prunes and licorice helps too.

BBBTBW -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/26/2007 6:09:41 PM)

Kelloggs ALL BRAN CEREAL and as much water as you can stand in a day.  Stay away from Metmucil, it is cement cleverly disguised as a laxitive.  Reiterating Tribe, Prunes and Licorice are excellent natural diareutics(sic)  If you drink coffee that will work too.  You are the only person who knows how your body responds to different things.  I would try to stay natural as far as laxitives go.....but if they don't work, go ahead and step over the line to the chemical as a last resort.

ready4srvce4all -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/26/2007 7:36:30 PM)

I agree that fiber and water are the best advice, and preferably, natural fiber, from raw fruit and vegetables.  But one thing I'd like to add....exercise.   A nice brisk walk can do wonders.   The abdominal muscles are worked, and that helps stimulate peristalsis.

Constipation can become a major source of pain, and if left unchecked can lead to bowel obstruction.  When you go for the ultrasound.....and you feel you are still constipated, ask your doctor for an x-ray order for an abdominal flat plate.  If moving your bowels is painful, and you note hard feces, you may want to ask for the flat plate anyhow.
If you are not emptying completely, then it's possible you may need a medication like reglan, which speeds gastric motility.

And to reititerate what has been said already...water, water, water.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/26/2007 8:16:02 PM)

Pumpkin. I am very sensative to medications, and my doctor (and strangely enough its the same thing that was recommended for my dog) said pumpkin would work. Like a charm.

thankyou all for taking the time to reply- I am looking into all your suggestions. I drank prune juice diluted and took some Metamucil (fiber) and I'm as regular as one girl can be lol....I do need to eat more fiber but can't drink anymore water lol..I drink about 30 oz of water a day!

amativedame -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/28/2007 4:27:38 PM)

vitamin C & magnesium might be something that would help you as well... often when people intake excess amounts of either they find they have the opposite problem.  Could be an easy, healthy and simple way to solve your problem.  Fiber is always a good idea though!

nyrisa -> RE: Constipation??? help. (5/28/2007 7:08:15 PM)

I have never had a problem with constipation, but last month I was having stomach pain, and nausea, and eventually vomiting. I felt exactly like I needed to have a BM, but I could not even pass gas. Finally, after 24 hours of being miserable, I went to the ED, expecting to be told I had a stomach virus. But, after a CT scan, they said I had a small bowel obstruction. NOTHING was getting through. I was in the hospital for 8 days, 7 days of this with a tube down my nose, while they waited to see if I'd get better or need surgery. I finally got a little better, was discharged, then 4 days later was back with a partial obstruction, and spent 4 more days in the hospital. Since then, thank God, all has settled down.

Moral of story.... stomach pain can have many reasons, and the most common one is not always the cause. If I'd had any idea it was more than just a stomach virus, I would never have waited so long to go to the ED.

The advice about fiber, fluids, etc, is very good, but if you have any severe stomach pain, or even moderate pain that lasts for more than a few hours, don't delay seeing the doc.
