I have never had a problem with constipation, but last month I was having stomach pain, and nausea, and eventually vomiting. I felt exactly like I needed to have a BM, but I could not even pass gas. Finally, after 24 hours of being miserable, I went to the ED, expecting to be told I had a stomach virus. But, after a CT scan, they said I had a small bowel obstruction. NOTHING was getting through. I was in the hospital for 8 days, 7 days of this with a tube down my nose, while they waited to see if I'd get better or need surgery. I finally got a little better, was discharged, then 4 days later was back with a partial obstruction, and spent 4 more days in the hospital. Since then, thank God, all has settled down. Moral of story.... stomach pain can have many reasons, and the most common one is not always the cause. If I'd had any idea it was more than just a stomach virus, I would never have waited so long to go to the ED. The advice about fiber, fluids, etc, is very good, but if you have any severe stomach pain, or even moderate pain that lasts for more than a few hours, don't delay seeing the doc.
