I would like to start a thread.
It might even be interesting.
Others might even contribute to it.
We could have a real conversation without lots of copying of things gone before.
Oh dear constructive criticism.
There is just one big problem I haven't a clue how.
So all those people who love giving advice.
Please tell me how.
I can't gurantee I will understand it even when you've told me.
But I will try very very hard.

gypsygrl -> RE: Kudos! to the BRAVE CM regulars that START new threads! (5/27/2007 12:56:30 PM)

For some reason, I usually only start threads when I'm pms'ing or am in some other kind of manic state.  I find it takes a lot of energy to keep responding to people who respond to an op and I run out of steam pretty quick.  But, I feel rude if I don't maintain my end of the conversation.

But, I thought I'd point out that pancakes, bacon and sausage isn't good for y'all and I think you're probably self-destructive and should see a competant psychiatrist and perhaps consider medication.  But, thats just my opinion. :)

May not be good for Me, but what a way to go!

Go to the section of CM you want to start it in, for example, here in Off Topic Discussion.

Click on the pill-shaped box that says "New Post", on the left of the screen, underneath the list of people viewing the section.

Put the name of your thread at the top of the box that pops up, then type like mad.

There is always a bit of sadness when you launch a well though out and politely phrased sort of thread and it just withers and dies at half a page and then you throw up a single line of text and a link and the sucker stays on topic for 20+ pages.  I even woke one back up six months later because I was fond of it... and it went one more page and died again...

Oh well.  Random smart-assing is fun too.

domiguy -> RE: Kudos! to the BRAVE CM regulars that START new threads! (5/27/2007 2:20:21 PM)

Seeing your thread die is more difficult than dealing with the loss of a child.....Creating a child simply takes an irresponsible woman and a drunk Domiguy....A thread is another matter....It takes  thought  and just the proper wording and commitment and then it requires the time and contributions of others to make it flourish...."It takes a viilage to raise a thread."  (Domiguy drops to his knees and cradles his dying thread while performing CPR as well as the Heimlich Maneuver)...."Live Dammit!!!...It was so beautiful and so young...Only three pages long!!!"

I just can't bear the responsiblities of starting another thread and just to see it cling to lfe for several days and then pass on....I have always felt that I would rather go first then to  feel the agony and  utter despair and loss of watching the very thing that I have brought into this world and breathed life into die such a miserable and lonely death.....I will start no more threads forever.

But I will gladly criticize others who do....Odd isn't it?

I run hot and cold when it comes to creating threads.
Some weeks I'll have all kinds of ideas for threads and then,....nothing.

DrkJourney -> RE: Kudos! to the BRAVE CM regulars that START new threads! (5/27/2007 2:33:02 PM)

For me, I don't really care how long the thread goes.  It's just a little disheartening all the people that have nothing better to do but put others down.

There is one here that everytime someone asks a question or has a topic, they feel the need to post links to all the other threads on this subject.  It may be well meaning, but it kind of makes you feel foolish for even asking.  The poster may have seen these other threads, but maybe their question wasn't answered, or  they still didn't understand.  Personally, if I want an answer to a question I'll research it on the web, but I have really felt bad for some that have asked a question to have it turned into a cruel joke.

Some people post just to talk about an experience, good or bad and just want to talk to people of like mind...then you get called a whiner....you can't win.

I think I've only started about two, call me chicken, but I'll never start another thread

ElectraGlide -> RE: Kudos! to the BRAVE CM regulars that START new threads! (5/27/2007 2:41:55 PM)

I make most of my post in Random Stupidity, because after a few people tear into it, like it was some kind of joke, the moderator puts it in there.

SirKenin -> RE: Kudos! to the BRAVE CM regulars that START new threads! (5/27/2007 2:46:33 PM)

The way I see it, I would rather see nothing as opposed to the usual Bush bashing, conspiracies, cat sneezes, what to make for dinner and all the other useless threads that pop up on a regular basis.  Other ones that come to mind are threads like "does sleeping get rid of a cold?" and other random nonsense that a 30 second Google search would reveal 10,864,387 links to the answer.  It is almost like people can not think for themselves..  Or they just want to hear themselves speak..  Or they have no lives so they empty their personal lives out onto a forum.  Mental illness, physical illness, money problems, sob stories, whatever.  Some people have no shame.

Nah..  I would rather there be a few really good quality, well thought out threads as opposed to page after page of crap that you have to filter through to get to all the good stuff.

How could we forget the horror of having a thread demoted like that?  The arbitrary "click" of a Mod mouse when we are deemed unworthy... such an awful sound.

Kenin, there's some truth to that.
That's why I tend to start threads that don't require a direct answer but an opinion.
I'm more interested in hearing people's opinions no matter what they are.

Yep, I'll bump one occasionally, just because I've been thinking about the subject..... it doesn't help usually lol.

I have found, that starting posts allows you to have empathy for those that at least
are willing to start a post
i already have a lot of empathy for and appreciation of those who start threads and are willing to "put themselves out there," risking ridicule.  After seeing that happen so very often, i'm just not that eager to do it myself.  As someone else stated somewhere here on the forums today, if i have a personal problem or dilemma i'm going to discuss it with important people in my life or perhaps with someone whose opinion i respect here BUT via a private message, not on the forums.  i have exchanged messages quite frequently with a handful of folks from the forums and have been wonderfully surprised at their genuine sincerity, kindness, and helpful advice.  We have discussed, though, that if the things we said had been said before certain others on the forums, that we would have probably been insulted and nothing positive would have ensued.

Again, it is so much easier to never stick your neck out and sit around and spend your life judging those that do
i think, for me, that's exactly why i don't start many threads and certainly not personal ones.  It shouldn't have to be a matter of "sticking your neck out" to start a discussion.  i have never once started up a conversation in "real life" with the full awareness that it may very well devolve into a fight or a pissing contest.  i just don't engage people like that.  Here, where so many different people congregate, no matter what you say or how you say it, someone will invariably have a problem with you or your opinon.  i think we all, at one time or a hundred, have responded to something we disagree with.  That's the nature of these discussion forums.  But, to me, it's just not worth the energy to start a thread and then defend, defend, defend myself to virtual strangers.  i don't judge those who start threads.  As i said, i appreciate their posts and admire their courage.  i very, very rarely ever have a bad word to say to an OP.  i usually find my harshest feelings/words reserved for the ones who attack the OP somewhere on down through the thread.  This is due to what you said above that it does take courage to "stick one's neck out."  So.....thanks to you guys who post sincere, well-thought out questions/topics.  It's truly what keeps the forums rolling along[:)]slave luci

MzMia -> RE: Kudos! to the BRAVE CM regulars that START new threads! (5/27/2007 8:31:23 PM)

I understand what you are saying here.
I don't like going into personal details myself, I am not here to
tantalize others. [;)]
I have found it is VERY easy to start topics, without going into personal
details.
I still say, I enjoy seeing new topics posted by the regular's here.
Lately, I don't see a lot of that happening, except in the off topic section.
