I'm actually really suprised they didn't have one before. Ireland isn't Saudi Arabia...

Yeah, Ireland's a very sexy country now that people are getting away from that oppressive Catholic Church.

Sexy? Ireland? Huh... give me one single example of Irish erotic art and I'll believe you, popeye [:D]

LadyEllen -> RE: A SEX shop in Northern Ireland! (6/7/2007 11:46:35 AM)

There's a heck of a difference between Ireland (a fairly modern state) and Northern Ireland (part of the UK still largely stuck where time stopped for it in 1969).

In Northern Ireland youre Protestant or Catholic, and if youre not one youre the other, and hated by the other side for it. It might well explain the lack of sex shops that the population seem to devote so much time to proving what good, moral Christians they are in their communion, contrasted with the other communion. If a Protestant visits a sex shop, its "proof" to Catholics of the wrongness of Protestantism, and vice versa.

Funny how such concerns never stopped either side from torturing, maiming and killing one another though.

Irish erotic art

Each and every word a lass says is 14 times hotter than every issue of Playboy, Penthouse, and BDSM monthly combined.

Yes... My ex-husband was from Newry (a Catholic). I spent many rainy days in pubs drinking Guinness. I always thought of Ireland (Eire and Ulster) as one nation with a north-eastern tip occupied by the British.

It's still not a very sexy country rofl :-)

kittinSol -> RE: A SEX shop in Northern Ireland! (6/7/2007 11:55:01 AM)

Of course, it's not because a country's not particularly sexy that its residents lack sex-appeal. Otherwise I wouldn't have married an Irish boy in the first place: alas I found out his sex-appeal was limited by his good looks. But that's another story altogether.

It should be one country - its only on account of the loyalist/Protestant majority population in the north (which was engineered prior to the vote on independence) that its not.

Its always amazed me how the UK government supported the loyalist/Protestant side of things and condemned the republican/Catholic side. The former sounded like and acted like nazis, plain and simple - whilst the latter always sounded eminently reasonable by comparison.

I totally agree with you. Before ever going to Ireland, I would listen to the BBC about the 'Troubles' and wonder why they couldn't just sort it out and stop fighting.

Little did I know then of the horrible acts the British committed in Ireland, especially before the Republic was created. The 'hush-hush' was very much prevalent in England at the time and I was a naive youngster.

When  I first went to Northern Ireland, the Peace Agreement had just been signed (it was under John Major, actually) and apparently, Newry had never seen so few British soldiers patrolling the streets. But my ex-husband told me how before, he would constantly get stopped by army (and he had nothing to do with Sinn Fein). Once, I suggested to his parents we go to a particular pub, and the look of horror on their face when they told me "We can't go there: it's a protestant pub" said it all.

It is a shameful past: the British government has a duty to disentangle the mess it made.

LadyEllen -> RE: A SEX shop in Northern Ireland! (6/7/2007 1:08:10 PM)

Oh I think the British government made a mess of it, but more out of ignorance than malice.

The blame for the recent troubles (1960s on) lies squarely on the Protestant/loyalist types. Few know that it all kicked off again only when they beat the crap out of Catholics protesting for equal rights. Most seem to believe the propaganda that its all down to those horrid republican types, because surprise surprise, they answered violence with violence when it became clear that protest was getting them nowhere but beaten up.

The last laugh is on the Protestant/loyalist types though - who have argued so long for the values of democracy, whilst also killing, maiming and torturing (in collusion with the police often). The Catholic/republican population has a far higher birth rate, so will outnumber the other side in a few years. The IRA stopped fighting thanks to demographics.

Ummm...

The Ulster Presbyterians in Northern Ireland make the Catholic Church look like sexual hedonists.

kittinSol -> RE: A SEX shop in Northern Ireland! (6/7/2007 3:17:38 PM)

Wink wink, cos that's exactly what I was hinting at - thanks for getting it.

kittinSol -> RE: A SEX shop in Northern Ireland! (6/7/2007 3:21:07 PM)

Yes, Ian Paisley being one of them (he is the fattest turncoat on the planet, by the way). Many Presbyterians in Ulster find their roots in Scotland: nobody's quite as dour as a Scotsman - except perhaps a Scotsman that lives in Northern Ireland [:D]

Vendaval -> RE: A SEX shop in Northern Ireland! (6/8/2007 2:27:10 PM)

I am not sure if this qualifies as progress or a public spectacle.  [;)]
