I totally agree with you. Before ever going to Ireland, I would listen to the BBC about the 'Troubles' and wonder why they couldn't just sort it out and stop fighting. Little did I know then of the horrible acts the British committed in Ireland, especially before the Republic was created. The 'hush-hush' was very much prevalent in England at the time and I was a naive youngster. When I first went to Northern Ireland, the Peace Agreement had just been signed (it was under John Major, actually) and apparently, Newry had never seen so few British soldiers patrolling the streets. But my ex-husband told me how before, he would constantly get stopped by army (and he had nothing to do with Sinn Fein). Once, I suggested to his parents we go to a particular pub, and the look of horror on their face when they told me "We can't go there: it's a protestant pub" said it all. It is a shameful past: the British government has a duty to disentangle the mess it made.
