I used to have a prescription for xanax, but haven't for a while now.  I had to borrow one about 6 days ago because my nerves were so very bad.  I hadn't taken one for a long time before that and haven't since.  It turned out I had to take a drug test today for a new job.  Does anyone know how long it stays in the system?  I don't usually take things like this, but it figures the one time I did I have something like this happen.

I heard pills take 3 days to get out of your system, it was never tested so I don't know if it is true or not,  but I would say after 6 days it should be gone.

It's not an illegal drug.  So even if they found it, you could say you are under a doc's care and that he prescribed it .  But like imthatacheyouhave said, they are most likely not testing the urine for that.  I'm guessing they are testing it for illegal narcotics, maybe pot and  cocaine.

Xanax is a benzodiazapine. Standard urine tests do not test for benzos, but expanded ones do. So you really need to know which test performed to be sure. Most employment urine tests are the standard type, not the expanded. And the expanded tests can test for about 6 or 7 drug classifications, the employer choses 3 or 4 to add to the standard test.

In any case Benzos are detectable for about 1-40 days, depending on which benzo and how many and how long you have taken them.

Standard drug tests test for:

cannabinoids, amphetamines, methamphetamines, cocaine, opioids and PCP.

It is illegal to take benzo's without a prescription.
Drug screenings for employment sometimes do include barbiturates and benzos.
If you test positive, they are going to want a reasonably current Rx and pharmacy info to confirm you have it legally. You can't just say "Im under a doctor's care."
Benzos taken infrequently clear the system in three days. If you use frequently they can take 4-6 weeks to clear your system, depending on your age, your renal function and other meds you may currently be taking.

Edited to add: you can get a test at the drug store and test yourself before you go.

Thank you all a lot.  I know I shouldn't have taken it, but at the time I didn't know what else to do.  I hadn't taken one for a long time before though, so hopefully it will all turn out okay.  Regardless it's all over now anyway so I have to live with whatever happens.  I just sat here tonight and started to worry.  I hoped maybe my fears could be calmed some by finding out some info on it.  They are in some ways, in others I am probably still as nervous.  I know it was a quick test that costs extra so they get it back in less time.  I don't know exactly what it checks for, but it probably is something like xanax would be.  I will just hope and pray that things go okay and I get this job.  I would hate to lose it for something so stupid when money was the thing stressing me out that much to begin with.
Thanks again, everyone.  The helpful and prompt answers are very much appreciated.

The drug itself isn't illegal (if prescribed). As opposed to cocaine or something of that nature, which is illegal in and of itself and cannot be prescribed that I know of.   She said she had xanax prescribed to her a while back. What happens if a doc prescribed it a long time ago and she never finished the bottle?  And one night a year later she felt anxiety and took one of the ones she had left.  Is that illegal?  Is there a certain time frame in which you must consume them?  Does it become illegal to take a xanax you had left from a prescription in the past?  If so, do they post a legal warning on the bottle?  Just curious.

I did a brief stint as a Staff Developer and was in charge of pre employment drug testing. In Massachusetts, at the facility I worked at the procedure was to ask the candidate if they were taking any medications and to list them on the form. IF any of these medications were controlled substances, such as Xanax, Vicodan, Valium etc, they had to provide me a current prescription bottle for them. I am not sure if it was the facilities policy or the drug screening policy, but I had to photograph the prescription bottle and verify it's legitamacy with the pharmacy.

To answer your question, is there a certain time frame that the med needs to be consumed by, the answer is generally no. If some one is prescribed a medicine
" as needed", it is completely feasable that they may have a bottle of medicine for a year and only have taken a few doses. I think that also answers your subsequent questions.

Thank you, that does answer my question.  As I was thinking about what Heather had said about the drug having to be prescribed to be legal, it occured to me that alot of people never finish it out.  And often the bottle will say "take as needed" rather than "take 3 per day" for instance.  So it's feasible that someone would have some left over from a year or two ago.  While it may lose potentcy or whathaveyou, I would think that it's legal to take it as long as it came out of the prescribed bottle.  Great info, thanks.

Don't worry about it; there's a reason the doc prescribed it the last time you got a scrip.

Xanax has a half-life of 6-12 hours, meaning it takes 30-60 hours for it to effectively leave the system (i.e. there's only about 3% of the original dose left at that time). It depends on the sensitivity of the test, but most I've seen won't register a dose after 5 half-lives strongly enough that they put it on the results.

Regardless it's all over now anyway so I have to live with whatever happens.

If it registers, have the doc write a letter saying that it's been used appropriately; that will usually clear things up.

Cocaine is still used as a local anaesthetic, particularly during surgical procedures in the face, nose and mouth (IIRC), as it strongly reduces bleeding and is a fairly effective local anaesthetic. Radiolabeled cocaine is used as a diagnostic tool in measuring the progression of Parkinson's.

Whether it can be prescribed to a regular person anymore, is a different matter.

Not sure what schedule it is in the US now, but not everyone is quite as concerned.

In most jurisdictions, I believe that's entirely legal.

Certainly is up here, at least.

Depending on the type of job you are going for, they usually dont test for things like that.  There are too many people on them legally for most companies to bother screening for it since that just lends to paperwork for the explinations and such.  If they are going to screen for it there will be a form beforehand asking you if you are taking any perscription drugs, if there is a chance they wil show up.

I agree the type of job will likely determine what they are testing for. We do employment placements with about 80 different companies around here. Most large companies only test for the basics. But if you are going for something in the human services field they will test for prescription drug abuse as well. A current prescription or letter from your doc would be required where i work, as old prescription bottles (more than a yr old) could be refilled illegally and would prove nothing.  Not informing them of something that later shows up on a drug screening, even if it is legit looks bad at least.

Best of luck!

When I took a drug test for my current job, I had to disclose anything I was taking, but I didn't have to produce the prescription bottle.  I don't know what all they were testing for, though.

The last time I had to have a drug test for a job I had to tell them every medicine I was on, I didn't have to prove I had a prescription, but also I wasn't on anything classified as narcotics so that might be why, If I had been on a narcotic and I had disclosed that I probably would have had to tell them the prescribing docs name so they could check it out to see if it was a legal prescription. But as Aswad said it doesn't last long in the body.

Last year i took 2 mg of xanax in a day - i would say both after 6 pm - i was at a hospital that evening and they had to run blood tests it showed 0 benzos in my system - the blood was drawn around midnight - so it was out of my system in 6 hours??  i had a regular prescript for them (1 mg 3X a day) - but doc said take on an as needed basis. i was tested for benzos, i specifically requested to be. i wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks a lot, everyone.  I passed!!  I guess I just got nervous and scared.  I don't normally take anything like that and haven't ever had to worry when I took one of the urine tests.  I did get the job and start next week, so all is well.

Thanks again!
