i thought some of her books were better than others. The Fountainhead was a story with a point. Atlas Shrugged was a point with a story attached. After a while, it was like someone was hitting me on the head with a stick every couple of seconds, yelling "DO YOU GET IT YET? DO YOU? DO YOU? HUH? SHOULD I REPEAT IT AGAIN? HUH? DO YOU GET IT??" i generally agree with her politics, tho... not so much the "rich people are great" part as the "government will fuck everything up everything it touches" part.

she was an interesting read when i was in high school. i don't really subscribe to her theories as a whole, and i'm definitely not a card carrying member of her foundation. she made some good points (as many do), but got a bit too far on the capitalistic bandwagon for my tastes. yes, she was one to drone on and on, but some writers do that; she just had the gift of far too many words. her ideals were idealistic, based upon her early life experiences in russia, along with a smattering of what transpired in her later years, so it is understandable how she came to think as she did. it worked for her, and it did make for some insightful thinking of many of my peers who read her.

Her work is a reaction against a totalitarian state; her solution is to run off into the la-la land of capitalist ideology. In her time and in her situation I can understand getting from point A to point B - fair enough. But you'll have to excuse me if I don't find her reactionary politics the solution to anything or to be the source of any significantly deep wisdom for the ages.

Ultimately, Rand doesn't know how to get along in a community. Her work is all about the triumph of the individual and yet the individual owes much to society and is standing on the shoulder of giants. In my view, social justice starts with the acknowledgment that we are all part of a community and that no one stands alone. You take, and you give back - that's a perfectly ethical exchange.



I read " Atlas Shrugged" at around 19 or so, so it's been awhile. Of course, at that time of my life, I was impressed, lol.

She sure turned out to be quite the egocentric loon, though. Her followers not being much better. I think it's pretty ironic that a philosophy that stressed individuality so much would evolve into such an incestuous clique. =)
