I have just finished treatment for a kidney infection like a week or two ago, I was wondering if I could get a uti again this quickly? And if so what things could cause a uti? I am concerned because I am getting the symptoms of a uti again.

Bacteria living on the skin infiltrating the bladder is the most common cause of UTI's. Sex can also cause it, as bacteria gets massaged into the urethra. Holding your urine when you need to urinate can cause the bladder to expand and trap some urine which then serves as a breeding ground for infection. Alkaloids in soda and ironically even antibiotics can also increase the risk of infection as they destroy natural flora in the bladder which helps to decrease infections.

Drink plenty of water and at least 4 ounces of cranberry juice a day, take showers instead of baths, clean your genitals after sex, take vitamin C, and consider wearing cotton crotched panties ( if you wear panties at all ) to keep from trapping moisture between your legs.

Find a urologist if you're getting these back to back. Could be due to different things including food allergies, clothing, laundry detergent, cystitis, intersticial cystitis and then some. You really need to track down the cause.

This is the first time I have gotten them back to back. The last infection I had was a kidney infection and if my back hadn't started hurting like it did when I had kidney stones I wouldn't have known about it. Now it feels like I have another uti but not like the last one, it just burns when I pee. I have been drinking alot of water since the last infection, I haven't tried the cranberry juice which I guess I should have done thought about because my mom insisted I drink it when I was a teenager when I had a uti. If I get another one after I get rid of this one I will bring it up with my doctor. Thank you all for the advice.

No, you really should call your doctor NOW (well, not RIGHT now, but first thing Monday morning?)  Let him make the decision on what you have and where it is and what kind of treatment it needs.

You may need a different antibiotic.  It's possible that you have another kind of bacteria causing this infection that the antibiotic you took (and I dearly hope you took ALL of the previous antibiotic!) wasn't effective for.  As time goes by, there are more and more "superbugs" appearing that are resistant to the common antibiotics.  The doctor may want to do a culture to see exactly what is causing the infection and which antibiotic will be effective.  The sooner you get started on that, the better.  If you wait, the infection could back right back up into the kidneys.

Cranberry juice is good, but you have to drink a LOT of plain cranberry juice, not sugary-sweet cranberry juice cocktail like you see in the grocery store.  A couple glasses of  Ocean Spray Cocktail isn't going to help you one bit.

Once again, since you just got over a kidney infection, you really shouldn't try to self-medicate this one, let your doctor advise you as soon as possible.

zindy, you have posted a lot about recurrent pelvic infections and uti infections. I really think you may have something going on that needs to be investigated further as to why you are getting repeated infections. I would want them to get really specific about what type of bacteria is causing all of this.

Not meaning to get too personal but, you do wipe from front to back right? No anal to vaginal contact? Clean all of your toys, insertables and hands properly?

When infections of this sort are recurring so frequently it does indicate that there is either something that is causing re-infection or there is something being missed.

Well, my doctors don't seem to worried about my recurrent infections. I have been going through those recurring infections for quite sometime, and I have never had a doctor listen to me and try to find out what is wrong. As of right now I don't have the health insurance to go to the doctor for all of these problems. I am working on getting some health insurance. I just didn't know if it was possible to get an infection again this soon after being treated for one.

If your doctors will not listen to you and investigate something as serious as repeatedly recurring infections, I would suggest it might be time for a new doctor.

I currently don't have the money to get another doctor, and I have called the health department and they only treat STDs and woman who are pregnant or they give them birthcontrol. I live in a very small comminuty and we don't have alot of resources so we don't have a large health department which if you ask me is stupid. But anyways, the two different Gyno's I seen also didn't seem concerned about it. So, I guess since no one was concerned I wasn't either. I may have also been because I was on state funded health care and from what I hear doctors don't get the payment they request from them so they don't waste their time on treating those patients the way they should, I don't know. I am checking with my employers on getting health care and hopefully it won't be too much that I won't be able to afford it.

zindy, if you just finished the antibiotic, and don't have the money to see the doctor again, try calling the doctor who prescribed this last antibiotic, and tell him the symptoms improved, but now you have burning with urination. If he recently saw you, and the symptoms sound improved but not gone, he may be willing to call in another antibiotic prescription to the pharmacy without seeing you. It is worth a try, the most he can do is say no, and all it will take is a phone call (or two; sometimes messages don't get through the chain from receptionist to doctor and back without losing their way).

Thank you for the idea Nyrisa...I didn't think of that. I don't take baths, and I wear cotton underwear everything you are supposed to and I still get them. I might try those pills and probably some cranberry pills too. Thanks everyone for your help.

zindy,
I would ask the doctor, as Celeste said, about interstitial cystitis.  I went through the same thing a few years ago and finally found relief after the proper diagnosis.  Cranberry juice and antibiotics tend to exacerbate the symptoms of IC.  There  is loads of info about it on the web, regarding foods to avoid, etc.  hope you are feeling better.

what is interstitial Cystitis? See these are terms I have never heard of before...might help for me to know some of these terms. Well, I don't usually get UTIs and I am thinking that it is more than likely that it is the kidney infection that hasn't gone away. I am hoping that is all it is.

Zindy,
It is an auto immune disease in which the inner lining of the bladder is ulcerative.  Its symptoms mirror those of a uti......frequent urination, burning, blood showing up in urine tests. Ty googling it, to get more info.  it took a physicians assistant to comment that my utis' were way too frequent and not responding to treatment, to recommend that i see a urologist.  Before he even did any tests he guessed at the diagnosis based on my symptoms.  The test just confirmed what he suspected.  Very often those with one kind of autoimmune disease suffer from others as well.  I also have TMJ and  Hashimotos, which is a problem with my thyroid. Its makes for some pretty interesting reading.  Good luck.

i was born with a yeast AND bacterial infection AND a uti...this has been my life story.  some women have slightly altered immune systems that lead them to not be able to balance their yeast and bacteria levels.  i did not go more than 4 months with out one or another or all of them....i even did permanent damage to my kidney by not getting a kidney infection treated soon enough...i didn't have insurance and didn't know what to do.  i learned that sometimes you just have to go to the clinic and get treated and then make payments for a very long time....you just have to suck it up and do it or risk the consequences.  i also learned that there are ALWAYS more medical options than you think there are...more on that in a bit.  this last 10 months i've had zero infections.  i got proactive and did some research....my PA agreed to help me try to help myself.  i did a very long, intensive and broad spectrum antibiotic course, followed by a 12 week course of Diflucan every 2 weeks.  it worked for me.  i also found out that being diabetic, or in my case, borderline, can cause this condition or at least make it worse.....i suggest you get tested, it's cheap and easy, if not free to get your blood sugar checked regularly.   now...for the research..

i did 15 minutes of digging and found some options for you to look into.  in your town there are several community health care choices....
REACHS community health care
502 W. Central Avenue, Suite 1
LaFollette, TN 37766
Phone: (423) 563-1001

they could also direct you somewhere if they aren't appropriate....also..
http://www.ahirc.org/cat_list.cfm?cat=31&st=tn
can give you many more options from around your state...sometimes you may have to drive a few miles to get what you need.........trust me, it's cheaper than risking your health.

try the things suggested, like calling the Dr...most will TELL you to do so if you have any more symptoms, and will not charge you anything...but if you HAVE to go in, do it....the worst that can happen is you have a medical bill.  i have nearly $25,000 in unpaid medical bills...and that's after insurance.  i'll never ever get out of debt, i'll just keep getting further in..but they can NOT refuse you medical attention if you have a valid need for it.  the bill won't kill you...avoiding it might.

I feel for you Zindy.... I suffered for years with recurring UTIs, lived on antibiotics which constantly gave me thrush - vicious circle!  The problem is that unless the Docs manage to identify the bug and treat it with the correct antibiotics, you can end up taking pills that just make the bug dormant, then next time you have sex/eat the wrong food, it will kick it into life again.  My condition was eventually made easier by having a cystoscopy and a dilation (done under GA), I have one about every 3 years now and its done the trick - also making sure you have a wee as soon as you have sex/play can bring the risk down (can be annoying but worthwhile).

I wouldn't suggest leaving it, I'd be onto your Docs, especially after a kidney infection - just to be sure

Hope you sort it out soon

My $.01...if you are on a low income most hospitals have free care programs. ... which also includes the specialists that are associated with them.
Do you have a regular Dr. that you see for other things...you might want to make an appt with him/her instead ( a "new pair of eyes" so to speak)-- perhaps they can assist you in setting you up with a urologist as they are more specialized than Gyn for urinary tract issues.
Trying to tough it out w/ a UTI can result in another kidney infection (as if they are not miserable enough on their own).
Whether you have $$ or not, adequate medical care is something we all need. It can be awkward to self-advocate but it may help if you can remember that regardless of who is actually paying them, ultimately they are working for you. Sometimes it can be helpful to simply ask them before they can give you thier opinion "if this were your sister what would you recommend?"

warm thoughts towards a speedy recovery -
aJ

Well, I have an appointment with my doctor they are associated with the hospital and have a sliding scale fee so all I have to do is take in a check stub and hopefully it won't cost too much. They also have a prescription service that might be able to help, I asked at my job about health insurance and it is 50 dollars a week and right now I can't afford that. Even if I could I would have to wait after my 90 day trial period before I could get it. Thanks everyone and now I have a few things to ask about when I go.
