I have to have an MRI on Friday.  How long do they take approximately and do I have to remove my piercings?

girl4you2 -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 3:44:34 PM)

about half an hour and no, you need not remove piercings, despite what the techs may initially tell you.

slaveaurora -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 3:45:20 PM)

Yes you do have to remove all metal, any piercings, jewelry, everything.

It depends on what body part you are having the MRI done on, on how long it will take.      And I hope you're not clostrophobic.

I am sorry, but that is not true.   The MRI machine will rip them right out.

earthycouple -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 3:58:12 PM)

rip them right out?  by magnetic force you mean?  Interesting.....headed off to learn more.

realisticwish -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 3:58:27 PM)

Due to various health problems. I have more of these than I care to count.  Everyone I had you had to remove all metal IF that part was going into the machine.   Plus always the bra even when that was not being tested.  The time depends on what you are getting tested but like slaveaurora said the place is small .. even the open ones aren't large in my opinion.

Best of luck with the results.   I will be sending good thoughts your way!

Aileen68:  I have to have an MRI on Friday.  How long do they take approximately and do I have to remove my piercings?

One:    Depending on the part(s) being imaged, your actual time in the magnet will be from 15 minutes to over two hours, but the great majority of scans are completed in under 30 minutes.  Of course this doesn't include waiting time.  The time you spend on the table, under the magnet, depends on a whole bunch of factors:
    the skill of the imaging technician
    the power and speed of the machine
    the number of images the radiologist wants to take
    the number of different parts of your body the radiologist wants to image
    the type of images being acquired
    the level of detail the radiologist wants to see in the images

Two:  You probably have to remove your piercings, depending (again) on what is getting imaged, and what the piercings are made of.  Any ferrous metal (steel, hematite beads, those big old nasty railroad spikes that you wear in your cute little...but I digress) obviously must be removed.  Non-ferrous metal usually is not a problem, but most MRI techs will require ALL "jewellry" to be pulled out.

The problem with piercings, by the way, is not the urban myth that they will get sucked out by the magnetic forces and leave you raw and bleeding, it is that they create areas of distortion in the MRI image.

Good luck, dear.

E.

I forgot about the dental work.. if you have a partial too it has to come out.

earthycouple -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 4:02:04 PM)

did some research; take it for what you will:
http://www.ringsofdesire.com/faq.html#out

 had a cervical (neck) MRI with 27 pieces of metal jewelry in my head. It worked just fine. My body jewelry is high-quality NON FERROMAGNETIC jewelry that will NOT react in an MRI environment. It won't get hot, and it won't behave in a magnetic way; it is non-magnetic. However, many medical practitioners are still undereducated about body jewelry (and not all body jewelry out there is high quality) and may require the metal be removed. Metal body jewelry will show up on the films as a "density" so if they are diagnostically looking directly in or under the area where you wear jewelry, it is reasonable to change to a plastic option.

Aileen68 -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 4:06:24 PM)

I have to have it done on my neck...the c-spine is what I think they call the section.  It appears that I  have a slipped disc which would explain nine days of constant pain.  Nothing too serious.  I suppose I won't be able to bring my wee ones then based on the time.  My only piercings are in my ears and nose.  Not concerned about the nose, but some of my ears are cartilage piercings and I don't want them to close up since they haven't been in all that long.  I don't have any time to try and track down spacers...any one know what I can use to keep the piercing s open.

Also...anyone have any experirence with prednisone?  I'm on it for the next ten days.

What he said.
I apologize, I am so brain fried right now I can hardly write a cognitive sentence.

Prednisone is a steriodial anti inflammatory that your body must adjust to.  It is taken at first on a high dose and weaned down slowly. It will probably come on a card with each day labeled for ease of use.  It could increase your appetite and it make make you feel or look slightly bloated in your face, hands and feet  (especially if they want you on it for longer terms than a typical dosage run of 5-10 days).

You may also feel tired due to it, but it usually works well to decrease the inflammation thus the pain.  Good Luck.

edited cause I said safety pin without thinking that's metal too...duh

girl4you2 -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 4:37:56 PM)

all i can say is that for my mri, when i insisted on keeping in my rings, they just taped them over and all was well. for a previous mri they told me to take them out and as i hadn't done my research, i complied. the holes closed up during the time it took to do the mri.

as to what you can use for spacers, any plastic will work fine. thick fishing cord, or any plastic that fits in the space, will do and you won't get any hassle from the techs.

hopefully you will notice some relief from the prednisone, as it decreases the swelling which can contribute to your pain. you're on a fairly short course, so any ill effects will be short lived.

Aileen68 -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 4:57:40 PM)

I think I'll be safe and just remove all the piercings and replace with fishing line.
I'm only on prednisone for ten days with the dose lowering every other day.
Hopefully it will provide some relief since I'm doing all I can just to get comfortable.  I haven't been sleeping because I can only sleep sitting up...the pain along my shoulder and down my arm has been too intense in any other position.
Thanks so much everyone for the tips and knowledge.

earthycouple -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 5:02:29 PM)

My husband is a massage therapist...often times they can help with some pain relief.  They can't fix things...but you'd be shocked by how helpful theraputic massage can be for pain

Aileen68 -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 5:05:55 PM)

I have a friend whose a massage therapist.  She did some sessions of myofascial release.  It did help relieve a lot of my arm pain, but I knew that after nine days and still in a lot of pain that things were a little more intense than I originally thought.  I kept waiting to wake up one morning and feel my knots loosen up and the pain subside...it hasn't happened so that's why I went to the doctor today.

They can last anywhere from 30-90 minutes depending on what is being done. It can also depend on the skill of the tech and the machine itself.

All jewelry, metal, glasses, partials (dental) needs to be removed. Do not wear a bra with a metal underwire (or any type of underwire for that matter) More than likely they will ask you to strip down to the waist,depending on the area, and have you put on a gown. Don't be afraid to ask for 2 gowns and wear one to open to the back and the other open to the front for extra coverage and/or protection.

It doesn't matter if the metal is magnetic or non magnetic. The problem is that they will show up as a density on the image and it's a pain in the ass to explain what they are. Better to simply remove and not worry about them. The piercings aren't going to close over in the small amount of time it takes to complete the MRI.

Whoops should have read a bit farther...C-spine or cervical spine encompasses the first 7 vertebrae from the skull down.

Best of luck to you.

Radiologically yours,

Hottiegurl -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 5:37:35 PM)

I have had so many MRI's that the techs knew me and how I liked my pillows and blankets.  Thankfully I am done with them except maybe once a year.   I have had my ring on and off but when they were doing my head they did want that jewelry off.  It is true about the metals making it harder to read the images.

I would be in it from 20 minutes to an hour.  Sometimes I would get a shot of contrasting dye other times I would not.

Depending on what model MRI you are in some are closed up and some are more open.  If you're  afraid they will give you a seditive.  It is loud in there and they give you ear mufflers for it.  I always turn the sounds to music in my head for fun.  Since you are  not allowed to move it passes the time.

About the prednisone, I have had it once when I had Bell's Palsy.  I did not feel any side effects.  I guess the Bell's Palsy was bad enough on its own to keep me occupied.

KatyLied -> RE: MRI (8/8/2007 8:02:28 PM)

Predisone can be horrid.  I've been on it in the past.  What you can expect: you may be jittery and have insomnia.  I'm talking major insomnia where you sleep for 3 hours a night, and you can keep on going like it's nothing.  I also had red flushing on my face and neck.  It will go away when you stop the prednisone.  It sounds bad, but it's a miracle drug.

mons -> RE: MRI (8/9/2007 3:02:25 AM)

Aileen greetings

you must take of all metal objects rings any piercings. anything metal must come off. it is so dangerous once it is off you will be just found. now are you going into an open MIR or  THE NORMAL ONE?
i am so claustrophobia so i need the open one you will be OK but if you feel scare you can have them take you our right away i wish you luck.

Mons
