I hope everyone's Christmas 2007 was all they expected and hoped for. Now that it's over with...

... there's only 365 days until Christmas 2008. Anyone got any special plans for the holiday?

;-)

Hmmm. . . I do not know what calendar you are using, but last I checked, there were 366 days until Christmas 2008.

No plans as of yet.  I am still working on next week.

Very nice, quiet Christmas, thank God.

Thing 1 and Thing 2 got lots of fun things and seemed content.  I got a little ring from Claire's that Thing 2 picked out for me, and I don't know if a piece of jewelry has ever meant so much.  Thing 1 got me a Paul McCartney cd and a pumpkin spice candle.  So now, I can listen to music, do a little aroma therapy, and look at my new ring...  bliss.

grins....thanks bear! smooches back!

I think Ohio is the farthes north Daddy has ever gone for an artifact show, and I doubt we'll ever go much farther than georgia anymore. Its honestly not worth it. We dont make enough money at a show to make it worth the expense of a long distance trip like that. Daddy wouldnt put his artifacts on a plane if his life depended on it, so we'd have the gas, the hotel rooms, the food for a long trip, plus the cost of the tables at the show...all of the off chance that we "might" make some money. We spent $400 last year to go to the Savannah Georgia show..and we made $24.

I can see your point! What I have noticed in the past few years of going is many of the vendors really increase their prices, even on the the less than gem quality pieces. I wanted to get a piece of decent grade lapis and the only vendor there had his prices marked up 8x the market rate! I wasn't too impressed.

you dont have any choice really...its eaither jack your prices so high, that you can manage to make back your expenses even if you only sell one or two peices, or lower your prices so far that you hope to draw absolutly all of your business but yout taking a huge cut off of what your things are really worth. The market is so awful right now, no one wants to spend anything, they want really awesome materials for next to nothing in price! Tables, just one 6' table at some of the shows are $80, plus tha cost of gas to load up a truck and drive it there and back, plus a hotel room, plus food since you have to eat out the entire weekend..its just not worth it anymore. We dont go to very many shows anymore if we have to say there overnight. One show in north florida is held at a campground, so we camp there, its a nice place and only costs $15 a night. Another show is up in Tallahassee, only about 3 blocks from my parents house, so we drive up with the UMs, stay at my parents and my mom keeps the babies for the day while we go to the show. Grandma gets to hang out with the UMs, free lodging, and mom always takes us out to dinner and cooks up breakfast. Makes it worth it. Other than that, we stay close to home.

In some ways I can sympathize. Yet as a buyer and collector, it makes it almost impossible to add to one's collection, especially when the vendor already has a well established business elsewhere and they just do the gem show circuit as a sideline. I do see the validity for the people who are trying to supplment their income and aren't in the "big" leagues so to speak.

Anyways, gotta go for now. making a batch of homemade soup and have a large turkey carcass I'm boiling down for stock. Looks like I'll have enough to feed an army so if anyone wants some hearty homemade soup for dinner, come on over! Hugs until later.

yup. and for those of us who do this as a hobby...it really hurts us. and I agree compleatly. how can you trade and build up a collection, when people want you to pay grade 10 prices for a grade 6 item? and gof forbid your actually interested in a grade 10 peice! The overstreet book has hurt most artifact collectors. he puts out these editions of a price guide every year, and puts pictures of different point types and their "prices" but generally the picture in the book is a grade 9 or 10 point. and every joe, tom, and shirly who reads the book and goes..OH! I have one of thoses! (pulls out a damaged grade 4 point of comparable type) and expects to get paid the price the book says! And the truth is, the book jacks up prices like crazy anyway, but most collectors refer to it like the bible!

look at the housing market! realators jacked up house prices to artificially raise the value and inflate the market, when the prices got so high no one could afford it and everyone realized they were paying twice what things were worth..the bottom fell out and the market ground to a halt...same things happenieng with the rocks. the big money people inflate the market prices, get people to expect that high dollar price tag...all it hurt was the small time people.
