Interview your therapist first. Menion this and then guage the reaction. That's what's worked for me.

Ditto Elegant.  Interviewing a therapist first is not going to accomplish much if he answers as he thinks he should to make a buck off you.

I'd be concerned with them trying to report domestic violence as well. Not sure how all that works with therapists.

as long as it's consentual a therapist cannot report anything. And a good therapist isn't just after your money. Then again...I've had a couple of good therapists.

Consenual will not always save you. No matter how much you tell a doctor it was consenual they may be required to report domestic violence. However, I am not sure how the law works with therapists who, I believe, have a different policies regarding confidential information.

If possible, it would probably be best to be sure and go from someone off the KAP website.

Hey LATEXBABY what's today Combative Friday or something
I also concur with Elegant's reply and I do not think she was saying NCSF had the answers.  What NCSF does however is provide resources which is a great thing for the community.  There are good KAP's on NCSF lists and bad ones or there are some who work for some and don't work for others just like life.  Still they are on the right track and there are some great resources there.

The NRA has a list of kink aware professionals? That would be fabulous and another benefit of my NRA membership.

Exactly as it worked for me, too.

My therapists have never known about BDSM or Ds before they met me and mine usually. But I wasn't going to them for scene matters, I was going to them for past issues or human relationship issues. A good therapist, one worthy your time and money in my opinion, will not judge your kink as long as it is not causing your problems nor will they let you hide behind your kind to free yourself (or others) of responsibilities to self and others in a relationship.

Yeah that too.

We could probably learn what other NRAs are out there, I might find one to join.

One question I always have when people bring up the "they could report" you issue.

Why does your therapist need to know details of your kinky dynamics? Is that why you are in therapy? If so, by all means get a professional who knows about it but my guess it that they won't let you hide behind the kink but will dig into the human issues.

If you aren't in therapy for your kinkiness, why do you need tell them more than "I'm into BDSM but that's not why I'm looking for a counselor. I'm need helping with X." If they keep focusing on the kink, they aren't the therapist for you; pay them for their time and walk out.

For me they need to know because they need to know about all of my life. If I am paying a therapist 100+ to listen to me talk about my life and my personal battle with depression, I better fucking be able to call my owner "Sir" along with his given name without them worrying about it. I want to be able to talk about my sub drop because while it's not depression, they have a lot in common for me.

My gyno does not need to know about all of my life in order to tell me that I don't have cervical cancer and my pap smear is normal. My surgeon doesn't need to know about all of my life to access how much tissue needs to be removed in order to complete my surgery. But I need to comfortable enough with my therapist to tell them anything for them to correctly assess my mental health.

Now, if you find a great therapist that way all the better! All that I am saying is that my guess is that you may have better luck finding a kink-friendly therapist off the KAP website and that it would make me feel more comfortable because I don't know exactly how the laws regarding the issues of domestic abuse work in any given state.

Hope this clarifies my reasoning.
