How can you dress dominantly without looking like an idiot?

You probably can't. Fetish wear almost always looks ridiculous on men, especially if they're trying to look dominant. It kind of sucks that you can't dress normal and attend kink events.

I think the best you can do is wear something relatively normal that can barely pass as "dominant". Think Yul Brynner, man in black. Not fetish, but stylish, strong, macho.

When I think male dominant, I think fragrant, smooth, shiny black leather pants with a vest and nice black leather boots.  Hmm do I have a leather fetish?  LOL, I did not used to think so.. the smell of wonderful leather is just oh so sexy.

OP: Personally I would stay away from leather/latex/PVC pants, because it is all to easy to overheat.  I think you would look very sexy in a poet shirt, tucked into a pair skin tight,(but not so tight you have trouble breathing, unless thats your thing *grins*) black boot cut jeans and nice boots. (not cowboy boots, but see if you can get a pair custom made, well worth it!) Or a pirate shirt would look good too,(though avoid the hat and eye patch, unless you are going to Halloween themed play party.) pair a nice belt with a fancy belt buckle,(saw one with a wolf's head sticking out, mmmmmmmmmmm that would look sexy as hell!) and a nice hair tie, a celtic style one would look good with ethier shirts.

Now on me, I would love to have a leather skirt, (would never wear leather pants, because of overheating.)

I kind of know where you are coming from.

The solution I found was to just wear a suit. Mind you, I’m not talking about something from off the rack Men’s Warehouse business suit, but rather a contemporary, fashionable suit that has been altered by a tailor to fit right. The fit is important. When a guy wears a suit that doesn’t fit properly it looks worse than just dressing in casual clothes. I don’t care what anyone says, but no suit off the rack fits right no matter what body you have. My recommendation is to go to a nice place where they will make sure it looks right. I personally like Paul Smith but there are a lot of choices. While you are there get a shirt and tie and if you don’t already have them get some nice shoes. I tend to go for something conservative like a contemporary black oxford. Overall the other recommendations here in respect to color are good. Black is probably the best choice here. Expect to spend some money.

Some people would worry about feeling overdressed. The thing is, if you wear a suit well and look comfortable in it people will just think you dress like that all the time.

Another less expensive solution is to just wear a lot of black. Get a nice pair of jeans, some boots and a black button down shirt and you should be good.

I have found the suit thing to be helpful in a lot of situations. When I got into my late 20s (I’m 32 now) I started wearing suits more often to work and when I go out.

I would have to say as a sub it's not so much what a Dom wears as how he wears it. It's more about confidence. He could be in blue jeans, a white t-shirt and boots and command me if he is in command. Make sense?

I know lots of events that dress code's not required for, most of them are parties here in sac, but folsom fringe hosted by SM oddesey don't require a dress code.

All depends on where ya go.

I agree that its not 'what' he is wearing but 'how' he is wearing it! That being said, i have always swooned for men in good suits!!

Edited to add: Not all men can wear suits - some cannot carry them off. But a man that can wear a good suit well - hmmm 'swoon'!!

Bond, James Bond.  It seems that a tuxedo comes across as suave, sophisticated, and possibly dangerous.  Whenever I wear one, I feel superior.

TNstepsout -> RE: How can I dress dominantly without looking like an idiot? (10/11/2007 9:19:54 PM)

I don't think your clothing has to be dominant. In fact, I'm not really sure what you mean by that, unless you meant fetish? I love your pics and I think you have a great sense of style. The confidence you exhibit when you show off your own personal style is more than enough dominance.

bgasser2002 -> RE: How can I dress dominantly without looking like an idiot? (10/12/2007 9:09:42 PM)

i personally would shy away from a full suit, too hot and impractical for play, but a dress shirt is always nice.  Maybe rayon or silk as an alternative to poet shirt that seems to have alot of votes.  As soon as you're at the party the first thing you'd do is take off the jacket anyway and probably unbutton a few buttons on the shirt.  Also, a Dom friend of mine bought an industrial-ish rubber apron from a industry supply store coupled with black pants and harley davidson's steel toes, no shirt under the apron or a wife beater, and a black bandana over his face bandit style.  It's a stunning look!

Greetings Libertinistic,
Please don't fall into the newbie habit, that so many doms think makes them feel "domly"
1)Wearing a big huge flogger hug down by your side swaying does NOT make you look more domly
2)Wearing a shirt that says "MASTER" "DOMINANT" "TRAINER" Does NOT make you dominant
3)figuring out hanky codes does NOT make you dominant......
4)Wearing head to toe leather, latex or any other fetish clothing when the weather temperature is so unappropriate for clothing choices...NOT

Do you know what makes you dominant?  Not the clothes you choose, not the style you wear, ITs YOU!...
You have all the power to be dominant. Do you present yourself in such a fashion?
Do you have confidence even in an area of ignorance?  Do you hold your head high standing up for yourself, and have that radiating personality.....
These things and so much more make you dominant....

Good luck with your search for the perfect attire,
sincerely
melanie

Judging from your photo, you might want to look at some of the fashion that Penn Gillette (of the magic duo "Penn and Teller") wears onstage. The guy, despite being a teddy bear type, always comes off as in command of his audiance and the act. This is not by some accident. Nothing that pair does is by accident. You just seem to share some of the same facial characteristics as him.

Another possible way for getting ideas for "Dom fashion" is to check out BDSM art. The artists tap directly into the visual fantasy of the power exchange. Check out the art of Michael Manning, or Robert Bishop sometime. Tear your eyes away from the dipictions of the submissives long enough to take note of what the Doms in these images are wearing. Adopt and adapt what you think will work for you, your body type, and style of domination.

I'm okay with doing my Domming in whatever I happen to be wearing, but I'm a /very/ visual person (particularly where my kink is concerned) and I feel inclined to dress sort-sort-of-"up" for my scenes.

The thing is, I'm really not into fetish fashion so much.  It looks very good on a small number of folks and pretty rubbish on most everyone else.  I'm no rocket-bodied superDom, and that lands me pretty firmly in the "someone else" category, so I'm looking for alternative ways to encode "this man is a dominant" for those situations that benefit from it.

There's no contest that manner and confidence and bearing all matter (probably more than clothes, honestly) but I'm fairly solid on those.  So I'm just focusing on the clothes for now.

TheLibertinistic -> RE: How can I dress dominantly without looking like an idiot? (11/5/2007 12:09:28 PM)

A quick perusal of what Michael Manning I can find on the web tells me I'm actually kind of in love with his art style and character designs...

High gothics  like interview with a vampire and queen of the dammed .old victorian formal .Suits are great but an ill fitting suit  is awefull . I personaly Mix n match depending on my  mood  with rubber latex  pvc , gothic , vamp , toss in  some renwear , satans and silks  work well . though dont wear um all at once LOL . I would also say  comfort  and fit  counts big time .Kambriel is a grand place . depending on where you live  old victorian  western is  fun in the southwest , in the south a  southern gentleman would say a  ton without saying a word .Most of all have fun with it .

This girl just loves your shiva icon and begs forgiveness in advance for saying that she just saw the new movie "WAR" with Jet Li yesterday and totally gets the shivers around guys wearing black Armani with either white or black shirts like the yakuza and triad gangsters do. There is no substitute for a man in a well-tailored suit (with appropriate accesories)...

Long hair is all very medievel and appealing in it's own way, and t-shirts and boots, and talk about Oily-fit jeans This girl just saw this really kewt guy wearing a pair of Levi's 524's the other day that looked better on him than on most women.

This girl begs forebearance on her aesthetic outburst.
