This is for those interesed in the minute details--from something that I have written before... Fellatio/cunnilingus does have a risk but it seems relatively low for the transmission of HIV--but "relatively low" doesn't help if you become infected and face death. Ghonnorhea can be very easily transmitted orally. Syphilis can be transmitted orally and unfortunately lesions are virtually always visible on men (but painless) but in either gender oral lesions can be mistaken for oral herpes, or aphous ulcers (those odd sores that some get usually on the inner mucosa of the mounth--they are harmless) and since they do not cause pain--may be ignored. However these lesions carry a very high Treponema pallidum (the organism responsible for the diseas Syphilis) and are very infective, and may make the risk of HIV infection much higher due to the broken mucosal barrier. From a urotoday online article: during 2000 to 2002. In almost 14% of cases (of reported syphilis), oral sex was the subjects' only sexual exposure during the time they had acquired the disease; this was reported by 20.3% of the MSM, 6.4% of heterosexual men and 6.9% of heterosexual women. (my note: MSM = Male/male sex) Chlamydia can occur orally and often presents as a minor sore throat or it can be asymptomatic (no symptoms). Oral Chlamydia can be transmitted to the vagina or penis by this route. Over 900,000 cases of Chlamydia were documented in 1992 according to CDC. Chlamydia is often asymptomatic in men, and can be asymptomatic or become asymptomatic in women. But in the case of women almost a quarter infected will develop PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) which can lead to infertility and other problems. HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) can be transmitted by oral sexual contact, though I'm not sure--I don't think this is common. (If there was for instance group sex--this may be a easy STI route). Person one has genital HPV--person two has virus orally and then goes down on person three--though person two might not get oral HPV it seems to me that this is a good viral route from person one to person three. HSV (Herpes) Both the oral and genital HSV types can be transmitted orally. In other words a person who has genital herpes (and who can often show no symptoms visibly) can infect a persos such that they have genital herpes orally sited. The reverse can occur also. Condoms will help but condoms never offer 100% protection (their failure rate to prevent pregnancy is such that with ten years of usage--there is, statistically generally one pregnancy. Semen leaks, they fall off, and partners may not know or deal with the proper mechanics of them. HSV and HPV can be sited (where virus is being shed) beyond where a condom covers. In short--as mentioned--the only safe sex is written sex (ignoring Carpal Tunnel for those erudite hottties). My take: Commit to an exclusive relationship--both go without intimate fluid contact for the requisite "latency" time, which usually nowadays is three months for HIV which causes AIDS (AIDS is virtually always fatal), and much less time for Chalymidia/Ghonnorhea/Syphilis, and then go for it. Though there is still risk of Herpes/HPV and some rarer problems. Or--use hand to genital, and/or an "oral dam," which is a barrier piece of latex. Sort'a makes an argument against a lot of partners...and in my opinion STI/STD (Sexually Transmitted Infection/Sexually transmitted diseases (the old term) makes testing a requisite part of life. If you have no insurance you can usually find a clinic that will provide free testing. (note: there is no general test for HPV or Herpes (in the absence of an outbreak). Just the facts of life new4u2use... protect yourself and have fun... Another interesting fact: The largest rise of transmission of HIV, believe it or not, has been in the elderly! The term "condo-cowboys" has been used in articles, and since the women are beyond child-bearing, there "seems," little need for protection---Quick!!! Warn Grandma.
