Cheney, Obama 'distant cousins' They may be polar opposites politically but US Vice-President Dick Cheney and Democratic candidate Barack Obama are related, Mr Cheney's wife says. Lynne Cheney said she had discovered while doing family research for a new book that her husband and the Illinois senator were eighth cousins.

She said she traced a common ancestor of the two men to be a 17th century immigrant from France.

She described the connection as "amazing".

Yep and Kerry is related to bush, in fact many of our presidents are related to one another.

I heard that we`re all cousins, with a common mother traced back to Africa, from thousands of years ago..

Has any one else heard that story?

It's one of those interesting bits of science theory... basically, there is something called Mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down through the maternal line. Common elements have been found in virtually everyone who's ever had their DNA inspected, giving rise to the theory that we all have a common female ancestor, way back. The Pop Science press, naturally, named her Eve :-)

If you accept that, at one time, the entire pre-human population was just a few individuals in the Rift Valley somewhere, it's entirely plausible that one tiny fragment of that population survived and spread, while the rest died off. Think of it as evolution in action...
