Noticeable Trends

Many of the cities on the list have high poverty rates and high frequencies of fast-food consumption.

In the city of Memphis, which does not include the outlying areas surveyed by the CDC, 24 percent of residents live below the poverty line. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the national average is 13 percent. The same trend was noticeable in the cities of Milwaukee (No. 17), Detroit (No. 5), and San Antonio, Texas, (No. 3) where 26 percent, 33 percent, and 18 percent of residents, respectively, live beneath the poverty line.

While fast-food consumption is a minor factor influencing obesity rates, purchasing patterns often reflect larger health issues and habits in certain communities. The average American had purchased fast food 16 days of the month between January and September of this year, according to Quick-Track research conducted by the consumer tracking group Sandelman & Associates. Thirteen cities on our list, including Memphis, Austin, Texas, and Indianapolis, met the national average or higher. Residents of San Antonio eat fast food 20 days of the month, and had the highest frequency of the cities on our list. "

So here we go. First cigarettes, now fast food. They are laying the groundwork for a future ban. Big Brother knows best and will save the poor fat people from themselves.
Here in LA, they are calling for a ban on any more fast food restaurants being built in South Central LA. Never mind the high crime rate, gang killings or drug use, it's Mcnuggets that are the enemy.

Memphis ranks near the top (or bottom) on violent crime, poverty, lack of education, obesity, and dead end jobs, all served up in a mix of corrupt politicians and apathetic voters.

And yet many factors are present which should contribute to being a pleasant, progressive place to live, such as lots of employers, lower cost of living, lack of natural disasters, etc.

Wonder where lies the disconnect?

Kalista, I put on a few pounds but I signed up at the Gym for another two years.

There have been studies done, showing that the majority of inner city areas where obesity is a problem have NO grocery stores within miles. So, they are forced to eat food from party stores, gas stations and fast food joints.It is a huge problem that hasn't been fixed, nor have I managed to find anyone even beginning to fix it. Imagine taking a bus, changing that bus several times over the course of a couple of hours. Then reaching a grocery store, loading up what you can hopefully carry than making the return trip. It is much easier and faster to hit the local party store. IMO it is really messed up, that entire system. If they cannot reach good quality food then what choice do they have? Anyone who has taken a public bus knows the difficulty of hauling around several bags of food, they've either done it or seen it. It is hard to do especially when you're older.

i'm seriously not trying to be snarky or start anything here...But You'll forgive me for the lack of appreciation for Your upstanding example...Are You not the same man who in the past said (on these vary boards) that if people really wanted to lose weight all they needed to do was eat less and exercise more?

I don't know where Columbia, SC (my hometown) ranks on the fattest cities but it's gotta be up there. I remember when I was a kid there were not that many obese people...as tiny little kids, we were (of course, wrongfully) a little amused when we saw them. But now it's normal, y'know?

I blame it on fried food and Dancing with the Stars.

...God, I hate that show.

Kalista, yup!
You do that for three months and I garauntee you'll lose weight.
But, it's soooooooooooo much easier to find an *excuse* and latch onto it!
Like I've said before, when I go out for a walk on the beach or for a ride on my bicycle I rarely see overweight people doing the same.
But, when I go to the Chinese all you can eat buffet I always see them! You tell me!

At first i was going to attempt to educate You.....However, since You put it out there that You "garauntee" me for God and everyone to see, i guess i want to know what i get.....................Because i'm here to tell You that i've been exercising a great deal and have been eating very little.... Have been trying to eat three times a day, but that's a big request for me and often i fall short....However, i am compelled to tell You that i've not lost any weight.....However since You "garauntee"d me..........i want to know..........what do i get now?????????????

It should be obvious, though; fast food doesn't generate as much tax revenue as sit down restaurants. More expensive dining can go to help pay for those fancy new BMW city employees seem to drive

Hi Kalista,

Remember that muscle, per square inch, weighs seven times as much as a square inch of fat.

You may be burning fat, but you're also gaining muscle. It's very hard to drop pounds when you're in an exercise regimine.

Look on the bright side though; when the pounds finally do come off, you'll not only weigh less, you'll also look trimmer and more tone. The scale isn't your enemy; give it three months, and you'll find you need to start buying new pants!!

Remember, eating at least three times a day is crucial! If your body doesn't get the 2000 calories it needs each day, it's going to think it's starving, and that exercise you do will end up burning muscle, not fat. The best solution is to actually carefully plan five small meals each day. Your body will eventually adjust to the fact that it always has ready fuel to burn, and it'll start reducing the stores of fat you've built up over time.

Kalista, Stephann, is 100% correct!
I garauntee it!
That is *exactly* what the Trainer at the Gym told me!
I've been at it for 3 weeks now and my pants are starting to fit better already.
But, I do a lot of cardio work as well as lift weights.
Stephann, are you a Trainer or in the medical field?
