When i was just 20 years old, i worked for a man who was a multi-millionaire who drove an old, rather unattractive, salt-rusted car.  One day i asked him, "You should really think about buying a new car."  He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye and asked, "Oh? And what kind of car do you think I should buy?"  i answered, "Oh something sporty maybe, but at least something that's not all rusted out and looks like a hunk of junk."  Then he told me, "The way I see it there are only two kinds of cars.... those that run and those that don't."  Now, based on my view, what kind of car do you think I should drive?"

Some people really are not that picky.  Old, young, fat, thin, brown, black, white, most asses look pretty similar when bent over.

Race and looks don't matter to us. It is the honesty,  personality and intellect that we look at first and foremost. Race has never been an issue. Now age does make a difference to us. We want someone that remembers the who the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin  were and not by listening to you  tube. Someone that isnt young enough to be our daughter and not old enough to be our parent.

I tend to think they're lying. As an older person myself, my requirements have become more stringent, not less. I know myself better now, and am not willing to deal with people who I know I just am not fully compatible with. And compatibility includes a whole truck full of things, not just those few.

When a person says looks unimportant  they may be referring not to bad grooming but weight,  age lines, scars, physical disabilities etc , it is much easier to write down  looks unimportant than to write a detailed  list of what they feel is acceptable attritributes

Some people are looking for compatible play partners so age, race and looks are not all that important as role they play so they are open to a wider parameter when it comes to partners,  but if your searching for someone to be a long term partner preferences do become important  so your more likely to narrow the search to what you find physically appealing to yourself.  For example I have seen one ad by a person who simply wanted a spanking partner he had no interest in having a sexual relation with the spanking partner,  so he would likely be open to a far wider range of individuals than the person who wants a long term monogamous relationship.

All that really only depends on what type of relationship you are looking for with that person. They may also thank you because you introduced them to some of this ancient musical taste. What I have seen most is that people of all ages surprise me in regards to what they like. Being born in a certain era does not always limit you to that era.

Now that made me laugh, but not so much laughing *with* you.

It doesn’t matter if people are laughing at me or with me as long as they are laughing. Life shouldn’t be so serious all the time. Some people need to learn not to take themselves too seriously either especially when no when else does.

I love this guy.  That's just what I always say.  My UMs will say "Mom, we're not laughing with you.  We're laughing at you."  And my reply is always..."Yeah, but you're laughing."

Ok, before I read anything else.  It depends on the rest of the profile.  I say this because someone may approach a profile and say, I don't qualify because of.............my age, my race, my looks, my whatever and that might just be a missed opportunity.

I wouldn't make a leap of judgement on it.  If I were seeking, I could say something similar.  It is not that my attraction to the person has nothing to do with looks, age, etc, but that I cannot say here is a set of physical characteristics that I dig.  I have been attracted to people older than me, younger than me and my age.  I have been attracted to people of all races.  I have a slight preference toward larger women, but a skinny girl with a fantastic personality might win me over and I could love it.  I have been attracted to men, women, and TSs too.  Overall, my lack of preferences in these categories do not make me hideous or lacking in self knowledge.  They simply mean that I am not going to put a box around my preferences and exclude some possibly great folks.  In some crazy hypothetical world, I love redheads, preferably goth/punk, but that doesn't mean any of my girlfriends fit that description or that i would limit searching to such weird qualifications.

A great short question...but difficult to give it a straight forward answer. Age race and looks should'nt be a barrier to a personal relationship..but lets break the question down.

At it's basic level, It's the intial look of a person that stimulates an interest.. We are all pack animals, so age, race defines you as to whom, which pack you belong and where you stand within a pack. From that point onwards we make sub concious decisions as to whom we wish to enact with based on the information learnt.

When you see that in a profile, do you think:

a) Open minded
or
b) Desperate?

Akasha

c) they looked at other profiles when writing theirs

Are you saying he was looking at the profile in your avatar when he wrote it?

Sounds good in theory, its a whole different matter when they try to put it into practice I suspect.

Me? I have an age, a race, and I often look unimportant... (should I go buy a tiara?)

I'm one of these people who say age race and looks unimportant.

Because to me these things are truly unimportant, especially in a D/s or BDSM relationship.

I could put it another way - brain and character mandatory. The most sexual element of a person is their mind, not their body. I've dated some very attractive people in my life, but there's nothing more soul-destroying than trying to share intimacy with someone with a pedestrian mentality and no imagination. It gets pointless when bedroom fun means staring at the ceiling or picking out the patterns in the wallpaper or bedding. Intimacy has got nothing to do with lying naked next to someone, intimacy to me is being able to be completely honest, open and emotionally transparent with someone who is really really close to you.

I also don't see why it's so hard to form a relationship with someone who's desperate.. Really? Does this also mean that you'd refuse to give food to someone who is starving? I have nothing against desperate people and here's why. If someone's that prepared to take a risk that they put themselves out on a limb, then this surely means that they're willing to take the risk of entering a new relationship.

A new relationship is a pure risk anyway.. it could either work out, or it could fall flat on its face in days, weeks or even months. Whenever you go into a new relationship you go into someone's life totally blind anyway, you're taking on not just that person, but that person's faults, problems, issues, everything. By the same token they're taking on your issues, faults, weaknesses and circumstances. These things either bring you together or they can tear you apart, it's entirely down to how you look at these things.

I mean, we all know that the photos we see on the profiles are nowhere near anything like the view of this person when say they've woken up at 7am on Sunday morning with a hangover after three hours of sleep after a heavy party. The profile is only ever the tip of the iceberg. I've yet to come across a profile which states 'I like to spend two and a half hours in the bathroom', 'I fart really loud', 'I throw tantrums when I don't get my own way', 'I have problems getting it up', 'I'm $30,000 in debt', but these are things which may or may not lie behind the profile of the person you're interested in.

I mean let's face it, the whole thing is a crap shoot, or isn't it? Am I being idealistic here or realistic? This is the way I see things.

I see someone who is more interested in who a person is inside than who they are superficiality.
