Punnishment.. result of NOT doing what told or required.

Discipline.. A strong hand to keep you from doing wrong. ( call it a pre-emptive strike so to speak)

"Discipline is instant, willing obedience to orders"

To be in a high state of discipline means to be willingly conforming to standards of conduct and protocol.

Punishment is a penalty imposed for doing wrong.

If I'm smilling as I lay into you with my slave whip and watch its five leather blades bite into the flesh on your back, its disclipline. If I'm not smiling and look stern (like the executioner) then its punishment. The worst punishment is knowing that you have displeased me.....

OK weird I thought for sure I replied to this, did you post it in multiple forums?

Discipline is controlled behavior. Punishment is one way (among many) which are used to attain controlled behavior.

Discipline look up the classical definition and you will find TEACHING to be at the center of it.

Punishment can be a part fo the Discipline process.

The Punishment part of a discipline system really is that part where the person attones for their transgressions. Many times it is a relief for them to have a set punishment so that they no longer punish themselves. Most people are far too close to their transgressions to make an appropriate estimation of what is a fair punishment for themselves and they tend to take it farther rather than being too light on themselves.

Opinions listed here are just that and worth exactly what you paid me for them

As an alternative and practical demonstration... get nakid, bend over the table and spread your legs wide and see/feel the difference.

Answers will vary on this and sometimes I've seen arguments erupt over it.

Discipline can have multiple meanings depending on context. A disciplined person for example can be someone who is obedient, has self control... or it could be someone who was just disciplined (punished). Discipline can be a strict form of training... for example, martial arts training in a specific style can be a specific form of discipline. But since you mentioned punishment and discipline together I'm assuming you meant discipline in the context of correcting and modifying behavior. In this case, punishment and discipline are almost synonymous.

Some people object to the use of the word punishment. One common reason is that there are a lot of people who suffered child abuse under the guise of "punishment", so depending on who you are dealing with be aware of that and be patient with it.

Some people prefer the word discipline because it can have a broader meaning. Punishment generally only refers to some negative consequence applied in response to an undesired behavior. Discipline can include that but can be broader and include more subtle corrective measures, general guidance, establishing expectations and even the use of positive rewards for desired behaviors.

Your other thread on positive reinforcement will shed some light on that later definition. I have not responded to it as yet, but I did find Perverseangelic's remarks to be on the mark. Unless further clarification is needed she said it pretty well already.

Well said, Padraig. I'd just like to add that 'punishment' carries moral connotations that 'discipline' does not. Punishment implies doing bad things or 'being bad'. Discipline is really a question of following through- and this can be done for good or ill (consider a well-disciplined SS officer, for instance).

I will leave it as an exercise to the reader to distinguish the difference.

Discipline forms many of the "fun" things of a D/s dynamic or relationship. I've always preferred a playful sub with some mischief about her but when she goes too far, I'll rein things in with some form of discipline - a look, a slap, push her to her knees, a nipple tweak, hair pull etc or something more formal such as having her bend over, lift her skirt and counting strokes etc.

And what's relevant is that we both enjoy when I assert my authority this way - it's a physical expression of who's the Dominant and who's the submissive. It reinforces respective "roles" (I do hate that word, though - actors *play* roles....). And most subs wanna know that they're not in charge, even if it physically hurts!

Punishment is the opposite for me. It's a consequence of her actions disappointing me in some serious way. I punish by not allowing her to please me for a specific amount of time; there'll be no physical contact and certainly no form of BDSM play. The difference basically boils down to my mood because of her actions. If I'm genuinely angry, she gets punished but if it's just about attitude and going a bit too far, I love pulling her into line - we BOTH do.

In my D/s relationships, we've both enjoyed discipline and both hated punishment. By not allowing her to please me through punishment, we are both punished because I'm also denied her use or service for the same prescribed time. Fortunately, discipline is ongoing at all levels; is a founding basis of the relationship and punishment is something that may only be necessary once a year or less....

Focus.

What does the word "discipline" mean? It is derived from the word "disciple" which means one who follows his master's teachings. To discipline is to teach.

Punishment is a penalty imposed for wrongdoing.

If this is the case, wouldn't it be very important for a person to know the difference between acts of discipline and punishment when it is delivered? To be deprived of sex, for example, could either be an act of discipline or imposed punishment, depending, I suppose, if the "offender" has done something wrong or if there is just a lesson to be learned from it.

Discipline is the path, punishment is the stick used to inform you when you stray fromk the path.

Discipline is something a submissive should seek, punishment is something they should not.
Discpiline is something a Dominant should be proud to administer, punishment is something They should not.
