lusciouslips19 -> pain and its warning signs to watch for (12/28/2007 8:42:06 PM)

It was suggested to me when posted on another thread that I should post this in general forum as the Domme thought this was very important knowlege.

As a massage Therapy Instructor I know the difference between different pain. . Burning is nerve pain. Throbbing is vascular. Stinging pain delivered is fine, burning, searing, pins and needles is signs of nerve pain and possible damage. Stabbing is acute. Aching is chronic. In Bondage you must watch for signs of cutting off circulation too long and nerve issues must be managed and managed well by a Dom who is sane

I. PAIN CLASSIFICATION

A. Acute
1. Either a symptom of a disease condition or a temporary aspect of medical treatment.
2. It acts as a warning signal
3. It is usually temporary, of sudden onset, and easily localized
4. Usually subsides with or without treatment

B. Chronic
1. Affects 25% of the population
2. Persist or recurs for indefinite periods, usually longer than 6 months
3. Has an obscure onset and the character and quality of pain changes over time
4. Usually is diffused, poorly localized and often requires the efforts to multidisciplinary health care team

C. Intractable
1. Chronic
2. It exist without demonstrable disease

D. Phantom
1. Frequently experience with amputation

E. Referred Pain
1. Pain is felt in a surface far from the stimulated organ
2. May result from stimulation of receptors in the viscera (internal organs)

F. Somatic Pain
1. arises from stimulation of receptors in skin (superficial) or from receptors in skeletal muscles, joints, tendons, and fascia (deep)

Listed below are the different types of pain location to be considered:

A. Location

1. Localized pain (confined to the site of origin).

2. Projected pain (a result of proximal nerve compression).

3. Radiating pain (diffuse pain, which is not well localized).

4. Referred pain (felt in an area distant from the site of the stimulus).
III. TYPES OF PAIN

A. Prickling Pain: Localized pain when skin is cut or jabbed.

B. Burning: A warm “burning” sensation on skin. Less localization – slower to develop.

C. Aching: When visceral organs are stimulated. It is constant, not localized and it is often referred to areas of the body far from where the damage has occurred.

D. Deep: Not usually localized, nauseating, and frequently associated with sweating and changes in blood pressure.

E. Muscle Pain: When blood supply to a muscle is occluded.

IV. TRIGGER POINTS( these are refered to as knots or pressure points by lay people)

A. An area that is aggravated by stress

B. Small areas of hyperirritability within muscles

C. Often located in a tight bond of muscle fibers

D. Can cause referred pain

VI. DERMATOME

A. An area of the skin that a sensory nerve root services.

B. Cutaneous (skin) distribution of spinal nerve sensation

VII. MOTOR POINT

A. The point where motor nerve enters the muscle it innervates and causes a muscle to twitch if stimulated.

I myself speak to my Dominant and let him know if I am experiencing burning tingling type pian in my wrist during bondage. Stinging pain is yummy. But this burining tingle one is a sign to ease up tension or change position all together.

If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me. Safety first.

It is so very important that subs know the difference in pain's. It is also very important that they speak upwhen things arent 'right". It is equally important that the Dom/me can leave their ego aside and listen. Thast where the "sane" comes into play.

I was going to say that one warning of sign of pain is when it starts to fucking hurt, but that would just be trivializing the thread...

But that would be too simple for those of us that need to be told about pain instead of just looking it up and using our own brains lol

People shouldnt trivialize this or blow this off as," well if it hurts it hurts" notion. If you are not aware of the different qualities of pain, how can you let your Master know how to keep you safe? If it wasnt for my knowlege of the difference in pain. as a masochist, I would have far greater injuries than just mild swelling that I experienced. I like to grit my teeth and "take it". It is our job as slave/submissives to speak up when neccesary.

Thinking that it is insulting because you can look it up and assume that I would post because I think you dont know how to use your brain is just shortsighted. How many of you out ther really thought about or knew that there were different kinds of pain that mean different things?
This is valuable information and some will be very appreciative.

If I'm in a scene and experiencing pain that list isn't going to be going through my head.  What is important at that point and time is the effectiveness of and my ability to talk with him and for him to recognize that things may be changing for me.  I need to be able to show and he needs to be able to see that what started out as good might not be so good right now.  It all boils down to communication once again, not a list.  That's not practical in any kind of scene.  At least not for me.

It would be crazy to think a list would be going through your head. Point is farmiliarizing yourself and education IS important. When I am teaching or performing therapy on someone, do I aanalize every thing I am doing. NO. I am educated so I am able to let my intuition and the intuition of my hands take over. But the eduacation is behind it.

Communication is important and a considerate and caring Dom.

I agree we have to be aware of different pains but I also agree with Aileen. Effective communication and trust is important and the fact that you learn each other. When I am taking Master pain and hitting sub space I am not thinking “oh shit this is bad pain let me tell him.” I am lucky if I can remember my name at that point.  It is almost unfair but it is his job to learn his slave as well and not rely on one way of being told that it hurts.

i am not trying to be better than any body....but because i am aware of different types of pain due to the constant pain i am in, the types of pain i like to play with and various injuries i have had including nerve damage, i have had moments in the middle of a scene where i have stopped and said "that nipple clamp is getting to the point of bad pain, if you leave it on longer i will loose complete circulation in it" and then continued on with the scene...that may just be the way my brain works, being able to compartmentalize the scene for a moment while i inform him of what is going on - like saying yellow, and telling the Top whats going on then continuing with the scene, oh wait, that is exactly what it is.....

having knowledge is not stupid...and being a submissive or slave does not negate your responsibility over yourself...that doesn't mean he shouldn't learn it either...you both should, so if all you can communicate is "it hurts, burning," he knows it is nerve pain...

LadyHugs -> RE: pain and its warning signs to watch for (12/29/2007 9:34:12 AM)

Dear lusciouslips19, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Bravo!

This list should help people understand that 'pain' is not a pain to fit all--it is how the body tells it's host where the body is having the pain--nerve vs muscle, etc.

Be good for non-medical dungeon monitors/Dungeon Masters to help someone in need.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful information with all of us.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,

Lady Hugs
