They say you're not a real Dominant or a real submissive

Then you ask what it means to be real, and find

There are so few rules as to what a Dominant must be. A submissive must be.

To the core aspect that a Dominant leads, a submissive follows.

Why do they really care to say that others aren't real.

Is it Jealousy. Is it fear.

Are they actively trying to make others seem worse for their own benefit.

Or maybe... That's exactly what they really believe.

The whole of your post was nicely said, and I'm not laughing at you, but this line made me giggle. I can see it now... a whole movement of Masters and slaves knocking on people's doors - kind of the Jehova's Witnesses of BDSM (no slur on those who are of that faith intended). And we could have a magazine called.... hmmm... The Dungeon that we hand out as we go. I think it has to do with it being 3 something in the morning.

Well the trick would be in the set-up. You could start off with something along the lines of:

"Ever feel like something's missing from your life? Ever look around and feel like everyone is settling for less than who they want? Ever want to love so deeply and so truly that it almost hurts? So deeply that perhaps you've thought - to yourself, of course - you might want to express it in a way others might deem strange? If so, BDSM might be for you."

The literature could go on to explain how many modern day BDSM equipment could perhaps have been based on earlier, more severe implementations originally created by the church....ok, maybe im going to far with that one.

Yea, I'd leave out the history of the equipment and stick with the fluffy motivational stories with the allegorical message at the end. The history of the implementations is something they learn about in the "next level."

I just found out on another thread that sex is a form of currency, which is exciting to no end. Misson work, however, is done for free - from faith that one's own convictions are correct and everyone else is going to hell if they don't agree, which makes it a great task for the one-true-wayers.

Being in an authority dynamic with someone is NOT the same as being fulfilled in your personal intimate relationship with someone BASED UPON an authority dynamic in the relationship.

I think that may be part of it in some particular instances. For the most part I think that people are unwilling to acknowledge ways of doing things that are different than their own because they feel it in some way takes away from their own dynamic. I have some very distinct ideas on what consitutes submission (that generally do not sit well with the fetish public, at large) but these only really apply in my own relationship. If you are not submitting to me then it really doesn't matter what you do or how you do it as long as it works for you and yours. Too many do not see it that way.
