I've been sick for a couple of weeks now, and Saturday woke up with the worst sinus headache...Fortunately for me the person i live with is a mid-wife/nurse practitioner...So, she called me in a Z-pack......Unfortunately, it was apparently too late and by the time i went to pick up the antibiotics it was a full fledged migraine...(Proven by the ahem...vomit...in my car)...Anyway, since that day, it's been like i have this lingering kind of edge of a  migraine thing....Has this happened to anyone else?? Any suggestions?? UGH..and yes, i have called the doctor and am supposed to go in and see her tomorrow, but without any health coverage i'm a little weary...

Yes, it's called an 'aura'. I'm glad you're going to the doctor. If you can't wait, go to the emergency room and get a shot.
Excederin migraine works for most of my headaches, but, probably not for an actual migraine.
Especially as ingrained as yours seems to be.

I wish you well.

p.s. (and this is the truth!) I used to have debilitating migraines. Regularly. After I left my husband, they quit occuring. I get one maybe once a year now. REALLY.

I checked where you live because I think I have the same thing. For about a week I could not hear, then it went to my eyes and sinuses... I have had a low grade sinus headache, and at times it throbs.

I started getting migraines about a year ago.  As a result of my osteoarthritis, two of the vertabrae in my neck fused together.  I don't usually get the auras, but am extremely sensitive to light and sounds.  I also get sick to my stomach, but fortunately I've never actually thrown up.
I'm not sure what you mean about the "lingering edge of a migraine kind of thing".  Migraines can last for days and often it will be at a less intense level, but feeling like it could go full blown at any minute.  Could this be what you're referring to?

Oh Kali, can we talk?? I get terrible migraines and they have been under control pretty much for about a year now since I discovered Imitrex. I got a severe sinus infection last year that combined with the worst headache I ever had in my life sent me to the emergency room where a smart intern gave me a shot of Imitrex. Since then, I take a pill form when I start to feel a migraine and it really helps.

I also take .25 mgs of topomax at bedtime to prevent them. All this worked until last Monday when I had oral surgery. After the surgery, which affected the sinuses, I got what you are talking about, a lingering migraine that did not respond to Imitrex or anything else for 6 days!!!!! I was vomiting, could not see, had the mouth pain from the surgery and basically wanted to die.

I had to get better to start my new job this Monday so I went to 3 different doctors, took all kinds of meds and finally this past Sunday, I took a steroid pill to "break" the migraine cycle and it worked. Jeez.

The main thing about migraines is prevention. You have to avoid triggers which is really hard, like certain types of lights, foods, stress (yeah. right).  Sinus infections and colds can trigger them. Obviously oral surgery does too! You have to sit a certain way at work ergonomically, at least I do, you need to take preventative meds and have a standby like Imitrex to stop a migraine when it hits.

I live with this for years, so feel free to write me anytime. It is awful and only those who experienced migraines know how bad it is; it is like a club you do not want to be a member of.

I have suffered
from migraines since i was aged 4 or 5. Sunday went out shopping and had to come flying home. I had a sudden migraine attack. Took my Midrin and went to bed. Headache would not let go of me (its grip was not loosening on me). I went to the Dr and was given a shot of Torpodol (sp?). Demerol makes me sleepy but i can't drive with it. It was supposed to knock me out, it didn't for even 15 minutes. Besides the shot today i got compazine for the nausea, tylenol for my neck pain (using new pillow), and unfortunately a shot for Tetnus which makes me sick/fever..
Excedrin Migraine med i used one time. It drove my heart nuts and i was very high on it (jitters). I threw it away. Yes, i have been to headache clinic and their diagnosis?
Surprise Surprise i suffer from migraine and sinus headaches at the same time. Tell me something i didn't know? This attack Sunday was a combo Sinus and Migraine. I got some warm water mixed salt and poured it up my nose and that helped my sinuses some. I am still having problems with nausea and the aura. I went to bed and slept some but i am still not feeling great.
Good luck with the Dr. You might want to keep a headache diary to see what u are eating to trigger the migraine, how you are feeling at the time the attack hits. It might prove some clues. My suggestion go to bed the same time every night even Sat and Sun and even get up the same time every day, vacation or not. So many things cause a migraine, weather, too much sleep, too little sleep, too much eating, too little eating, cabin pressure in a plane, etc. You get the idea. Also, stress. You may want to eat small meals every 3 hours to see if that helps. Find a headace clinic if you can (i know you don't have coverage) but maybe somebody could give you a pamphlet via the mail to help you.
Good luck!

It's rare for me and usually when I haven't been allowed to have enough recovery time to rest my body.  For me actually if I let myself just conk out for awhile after a migraine, I actually wake up feeling really great.  Though I have wondered if it's just due to the comparison of not being in such awful pain.

So I recommend giving yourself more "rest time" and see what happens.  Sickness is usually our bodies telling us we're not treating it right and trying to alert us to get back on the right track.

Also a long-time migraine sufferer...I take 200mg of topomax a day and imitrex at onset.
As the other posters said, prevention is key.
Keep an eye on the weather...changes in high and low pressure can cause onsets.
Another strategy to fight it is progesterone based birth control, since a lot of migraines are cycle centered.

Kalista, are you eating or drinking anything different than usual?  I noticed aspartame gives me horrendous migraines and can not have it.  Keep an eye on your diet to see if anything is related.

LA; You're so lucky. When I've had migraines, I've often had them for days, and the only relief I had was sleep. Waking up was torture...and NOT the fun kind at all.
OP, what did your doctor say/do? Are you feeling better?

*luck*

Luckily I have not suffered many migraines since becoming pregnant, but it wouldn't surprise me if after I have the baby and things with my hormones level out, that I resume having them.  I will at that time most likely go back on topomax for prevention and because of a sulfa allergy, imitrex is not an option, so relpax seems to work for onset.

Other suggestions that have helped me while pregnant and unable to use medication, cold packs to the back of the neck or on the right temple where my pain usually is the greatest.  This will help to constrict the blood vessels.  There are pressure points in the hands(the fleshy part between thumb and forefinger) or even on the ear lobes that can again help with blood flow to the brain. As other posts have mentioned, lots of rest too.

Many different things trigger migraines.  Finding out your triggers will pave the way to prevention for you.  Best of luck and speedy recovery.

Kalista, I'm a  member of the 'migraine club' I joined about 14 years ago; I see the neurologist next week actually to go over a BUNCH of blood tests and other test results that were ran last month. In the past I have taken Nortryptline (sp?)  as daily therapy, plus Imitrex as needed [the side effects were as bad as the migraines], its a last resort now; I have done other types of therapies as well.  In recent months, sex and orgasms have been the ONLY way to NOT get them; I didn't have a migraine for 2 weeks; then less than 48hrs after my bf left, I got them, and have since, 3 1/2 weeks and counting; he gets home on the 28th late.

WHat youa re describign are 'auras' as previously mentioned, I would see an eye doctor; they are generally caused by 'opthalmic migraines' and SUCK; I am a memebr of that club as well.

Getting pregnant got rid of my migraines for 10 glorious months and like I said, sex as of late.

Good luck, you are defiantly NOT alone.

I've found chocolate to be one of my triggers.  I can eat it in very small amounts, but at my own risk.  Waahhh!  Now I look for things that are chocolate flavored with no actual chocolate in them.
Has anyone seen one of those "nose bidets"?  It's like a small teapot and you fill it with warm salt water.  You pour it in one nostril and it fills the sinuses and comes out the other nostril.  It's not painful, but VERY helpful for people with sinus or allergy problems.  I saw it on one of those afternoon shows and they actually demonstrated it.  They said the best place to look for them was the pharmacy stores, but ever since they caught on they are in short supply.  I'm guessing you could find one on the internet.

I found the link to the information on "nose bidets".  Apparently it was on the Oprah Winfrey show.
Look here for the demonstration on her show:  http://www.oprah.com/health/oz/oz_20070426_350_106.jhtml
Sounds like this would help the triggers a lot of you have.

Mistress Scarlet

Edited to add that you can find even more information by simply typing "nose bidet" into your favorite search engine.  You can also find them under "neti pot".
Here's the link to one you can actually order online for about $15:

I saw that Oprah show when Dr. Oz was introducing the "nose bidet" I say if it helps go for it... but personally, the thought of using it makes my eyes water!

SR mentioned Topomax, and if it works for ya red, far out!  I've used it in the past and so did one of my friends.  We had the same side effects from it.... never, I say never again.  My brain was in a complete fog.

Sinus sufferer here.

The things you pour the salt water up your nose is commonly referred to as a nasal irrigator or a neti(sp) pot. I can't stand it so I have a small steamer with a hood into which you stick your nose and mouth. Breathing steam for 15 minutes is very helpful for sinus. The other thing for sinus sufferers is to get a scrip for Nasonex and use it faithfully, 2 sprays in each nostril once a day. I use it at night.

Forgot it the last couple of days, now my ear is bothering me and can only breathe out of one side. Keeping on top of the sinus problems is essential.

I've tried Nasonex and I had a terrible sore throat the next day.  I can't use it.

Where did you find the hood for directing steam to your mouth and nose?  I've never seen anything like that.

Doesn't it suck having to decide if  it's one from tension, sinus or hormones?   I carry around Tylenol Sinus, Excedrin, Midrin and muscle cream.  Never know which one I'm going to end up with.  Also have the suppositories for when I can't keep anything down.

Nothing, absolutely nothing ever helped when I had a hormonal one.  The first day was hell every month.

I find that popping 3 midrin, sitting in the tub with the shower raining down on my head as hot as I can handle it and then laying on a heating pad works for me most of the time.

I have noticed though that since I'm staring to have the premenopause thing going on that they have seemed to drop off quite a bit.

I can tell you though if your doctor suggest a BP med for vessel dialation which may get rid of them and you don't have high BP....not a good thing do to.   I ended up crying like a baby for my mommy and had to be taken to the ER.   I got dizzy as hell and about passed out and still had the pain.

Oxygen therapy didn't work to well for me either.   PCP suggested at the onset to come into the office and slap an oxygen mask on me and see if that changed anything.  Nope.

I'd like to revoke my membership to this club.
