DommeKimberly, being that I have two bad knees because of sports injuries, I have a tough time with kneeling or sitting on my haunches for long periods of time.  So I've adopted a position that helps me...I sit on my haunches, but tilt to one side.  I basically sit with my legs tucked underneath, but to the side.  There is no stress on the knees or ankles that I find.  He could sit in that position, but on the opposite leg that's injured (ie..sit on his right side if his left ankle is injured or vice versa).  I hope that helps.

Submissionary comes to mind. You can also put him in suspension straps.

in baseball catchers use two basic stances one that they are sitting on their ankles and another that I do not know how to discribe. this stance would work with a bad ankle, that stance was developed to save the catcher's knees and ankles.

I have done some image searches for it but I cant find it

I found this funny pic when I was looking

It kind of depends on what you're looking for. If you're thinking of a kneeling sort of position, i'd reccomend something along the lines of what i have done for the past little while (chronic, but sporatic, ankle pain). When kneeling, i use a good, strong pillow or a folded blanket under the good leg, putting it higher in the air and taking the stress off of both the good and bad ankles. This may only work for me. Took me a while to get the right position to not put added stress on the ankle. (Which has, surprisingly, not hurt for a few months now, it seems.) I also reccommend that, when he kneels, you make sure he's wearing a sturdy ankle-brace. That will keep it from getting jostled or the pressure to harsh on the sensitive spot.

Best of luck.
