has anyone here used a corset to maintain their current weight or trim a couple inches? i don't want to go all wasp waist,,,  just not be so tramatized come swim suit season. i have a good quality waist cincher, and my guess is that wearing it will one; curb my appitite (this i can attest to) two; modify my middle safely so long as i don't wear it too tightly. am i right and/or is there anything i should know before lacing up?

oh yeah, had surgury on my girly parts (big cyst inside ovary removed) and needed to know how to factor that in.          thanks- phoenix

All a corset is going to do is squeeze everything together.  It can definitely give you a more hourglass-like shape and squish some inches, but it will not be comfortable.

I wouldn't recommend it for weight loss because you're basically going to starve yourself or bust through.  Coming from someone that has lost (and kept off) 95 pounds, portion control is your biggest friend, along with exercise.

Long term usage of a corset will cause your body to eventually maintain that shape - your innards will shift around.

All of the reputable corset sites do not recommend a corset for weight loss (or even during)
One thing a corset (tight laced) induces in me is acid reflux. Kind of like when you're preggo, and there is no room for everything. Be careful of that. As acid reflux can cause serious health issues.

Not sure on the whole tight lacing thing but what I see the op as asking is might it help? And I think so. I love corsets, have several either made for me or made by myself specifically for me and when properly laced, making sure to not over tighten, they are extremely comfortable. The thing that I have noticed right from the beginning of wearing corsets is that you cannot eat as much at each sitting so in this aspect, I could see it being useful... just all depends on how you go about it in my opinion.

The only way a corset can help you to loss weight is if it hampers your ability to eat. In such a case, you probably couldn't breath very much either.

The idea is close to idiotcy as it's not practical, hardly sucessful, and unhealthy. Beides, your body will just fall back into place once you take the corsest off.

Can you provide any links? i'm not familiar with many serious tightlacing sites other than LISA, and the articles there aren't particularly discouraging of it-

One, I've been in the medical field for over ten years now.

Two, I sew corsets. I've also worn them on ocassion.

Three, every documentation on people who practice "corset training" include having to wear there corset for just about every hour of every day to keep the desired figure. For most, this also meant that the trainee had to sleep in there corset. Once off, it was only a matter of time before the trainees body began to reshape itself. Yes, the thirteen inch waist has been possible but Ethel Grangers biography clearly documents the time, discipline, and strict regiem needed for the thirteen inch accomplisment.

For the hope of changing your waist line, Corset Training is not a quick fix. It's a life style that you almost have to live 24/7 or you can forget all about it. Think of it as dieting. The weight will come back if you don't stick to your exercise/diet routine that got you thin in the first place. However, corset training does not offer you cardiovascular not muscular exercise. Instead, it shortens your breathing causing less oxygen to get to your body. Corset training also restricts movement and can decrease blood supply to certain parts of the body. Strong corsets also act as a back support causing your lower back muscles to weaken over time. Think of it as a back brace or weight trainning belt. Wearing one 24/7 may help your back at first but when does your back acturally get exercise and strengthening? If and when worn too long, your back will become dependent upon the corset.

If you don't like what I have to say, you can always research the old threads where other corset makers and wearers talk about what happend during and after wearing a corset.

The only logical and positive way to use a corset to lose weight would be not as a tight lacing, but perhaps as a physical reminder to watch what you are eating. Used in this aspect it could be helpful and keep you aware of your longterm goal. JMHO

Well...of course you don't begin wearing a corset 24/7 even if you want to do waist training.
(you wouldn't be able to at the beginning anyway...they can become...extremely uncomfortable...painful even) (ask me about the time I was stuck in one...[:'(][:o])
But you begin with a period of time that is comfortable to you, and work your way up.
Wearing one for about 8 hours per day will help to train your waist.
And, as stated above, when you stop, it will...untrain.
There are also special 'belts' or 'sleeping corsets' you can wear at night if you like.
So, no, corsets are not for helping you lose weight.
But they CAN help you shape your waist the way you want it.
However, it HAS to be a corset that is made just for you, and it must have the proper boning in it to do so. (they run $300 at the minimum for a decent corset)

Cant normal clothes in the closet do the same. When my pants begin to tighten or my belt needs to free a notch, I know it's time to diet again.

Well...maybe...but...wear a corset (tightlaced) for a week or two.

[:D] Yup sure can! I was thinking of the mental aspect of it tho that some women might find not only appealing but as a more tangible reminder than a single point of discomfort - kinda hard to forget it when you're wearing something like that.  Any "special" clothing would do the trick tho, as long as the mindset is right. Maybe a guy could wear his favourite silk tie "oops, no chili or sloppy burgers today! don't wanna mess up my tie!"

Thank Y'all, for all the replies. Sabella had me figured out with the mental thing. i never ment to have the corset do the work for me, just act as a more exact "string on the finger". my cincher only goes to 22 inches, and i only lace it there once or twice a year for renn faires. Recent events have it to where i must go to care for my mother, and feed big dogs (really really really big), chickens, guinnies, cats... i think that and worring about her cancer will trim off those seven pounds that had me in a freak. I know some celebs talking about corset training mentioned that they had to stagger their eating.  if they were goign to eat two tacos they had to have one then eat the other an hour or so later.

that is good.

the fact that you wouldn't be able to do much excercise with a corset on...is worse.

and also it wouldn't help much with the weight loss considering that your body would just re-distribute the weight in different areas. why do you think guys bellys hang OVER there belt. because the belt is there preventing it from being even distribution from there pelvis up to there chest.

so the answer is NO.
