Except this isn't a place to hold private conversations... this is an open forum where people know in advance that what they are posting will be subject to comment and even criticism from the group at large.

I didn't say private conversation.  I have no problem with people *joining in* on the conversation, nor *related* comment and criticism.  In fact, I encourge that.  It is the off topic drag that I have issue with.

It confused you because by the time you got to it, half of the posts had been deleted by Mod11.  You would have had to have seen it before that to really understand.

I personally just don't give a damn if a thread gets hijacked, including my own. This idea that once it gets hijacked it will never go back on topic is absurd. If the topic is interesting enough new people will come and post their own ideas on the OP, pulling the topic back.

If your thread or your friend's thread gets hijacked, get over it. Nobody did it to insult you. It's the same as sitting at a table and trying to introduce a new topic of conversation and whoever you are talking with go "Nah, we'd rather talk about this instead." Hell at least hijack keeps the thread alive and I've gotten some interesting responses to my threads because thread hijack kept them alive and on the first page.

No, you're probably more than welcome to have your frivolous threads in the off topic/humour areas of the site.  The point is, your jello wrestling probably isn't appropriate while other people are trying to discuss issues relevant to the thread in question.

If you're sitting at a table and want to introduce a new topic of conversation, and your tablemates say, "You stupid doofus, how dumb of you to think anyone would be interested in your inane subject," and then the conversation continues in a manner that is demeaning and nasty, that is bullying. And when the tablemates get called on the carpet, they claim that "the OP was just asking for it by being stupid and uninformed"

If you think the OP is stupid and uninformed, just ignore the thread - dondon't post at all; the thread will die a natural death. The OP may be sad that no one wanted to discuss his/her topic, but at least he/she will not be left feeling like a beating has just been received.

A thread drifting naturally into a different direction is natural. Deliberately belittling and putting down the OP is bullying, and there's a big difference.
