I'm sure plenty of people have given sufficient advise here, but there appears to be a couple of contradictions. I ran a Body Piercing Studio for a while and, to be totally honest, you need to do your research in your area well. ANYBODY who pierces at home should be avoided at all costs - the risks of infection and secondary infection are too high. Only get your piercing done by a fully trained and qualified professional - and these are'nt as common as you think! Piercing is seen by many as a way to make a quick easy profit. The majority of 'professional' organisations they claim to be a member of either don't exist or were, unsurprisingly, invented by themselves. And the majority are'nt trained at all. In the UK [and I know its no different in the USA], it is disturbing the number of shylocks and shysters in the industry. Whilst some Tattooists are decent Piercers, many are not - its just another way of getting a quick twenty quid from some young girl that knows no better. Good Piercing is a profession in its own right. My argument is that you don't go to your Dentist to treat a broken leg, so why go to a Tattooist to get pierced? [Likewise, you don't get many people going to a Body Piercer and saying 'slap a quick tattoo on me arm whilst I'm here'!!!] If a Master / Mistress is serious about piercing their slave, then they will care enough to either have it done professionally - or pay a good training establishment to train them! For advice, try contacting Cold Steel [in the USA and the UK], they are market leaders in their field and give good info - you'll find them quickly on the net. And look at Wildcat in the UK, they manufacture good quality jewellry - but more importantly are at the forefront for informing you about what should be used in invasive piercing and what should'nt. [and yes, I've seen a lot of messy things after those who know little bought rubbish from the market 'because it was cheap'! The worst being scarred for life after the surgical removal of the dissolved gloop that once was 'jewellry'. The person using 14ct gold??? Never use any level of gold in a fresh piercing - you got off lightly. If you find a Studio you're comfortable with, a couple of basic rules are: have they got clearly defined age limits? [if they're piercing anyone, they're in it for the money - get out quick]. Do they have individual and detailed aftercare info sheets for each piercing? Do they have an autoclave? [currently the only effective way to sterilise efficiently]. If so, is it regularly spore tested? Do they use piercing guns? [guns are NOT hygenic, can cause damage and if a Body Piercer uses them for ANY piercing they don't have a clue and are not keeping themselves updated - run away fast!] Count on the healing period to be up to 12 months. And yes nipple piercing can hurt [half the UK heard me shout f**k! when I had mine done - and yes, I travelled 80miles to a piercer I trusted!], strangely enough it generally hurts men more than women. oh, and don't use any peroxide based solution, no salt water, no special hocus pocus specially prepared piercing aftercare claptrap cream. All you need is a little warm water and a gentle anti-bacterial soap. And clean hands and fingernails!!!! Oh, and I'm serious about the sheer number of bad piercers - they outnumber 'proper' ones by about 3 to 1!! HIV is'nt the only problem, Hepatitus is proving to be a major worry for piercers - and it'll take up to ten years before you find out that you got that little freebie thrown in! oh, and in the UK at least, if the piercer proudly proclaims 'registered with xyz council and environmental health approved' or similar - just chuckle! It looks good to the unknowing. All the local council is interested in is if you have hot and cold water, and a wipe down surface. thats it. I had to explain to my local council what an autoclave was! And - although my studio was by far and large the best appointed - very similar to a hospital! My environmental health inspection took less than 60 seconds, no questions asked, here's your permit. They are a waste of time - they do not understand the business and therefore cannot protect you. [hopefully due to change soon with new laws and inspection designed to put cowboys out of business. I wish!] And for those who may be historically inclined, nipple piercing has been originally attributed to the romans who used it as a means to keep their cloaks attach and in place. [Its a strange world!] Hope this helps a little. [I do have a lot more info on what to look for, what jewellry to use etc if needed. Just mail me] rfm.
