Reading philosophy's Miles From Nowhere thread got me to thinking: how big is the town/city where you live? Do you wish you lived someplace smaller, or larger? Why?

the city i live in is now the biggest (geographically) in the US.  to me, it doesnt matter much where i live, i dont get out a whole lot, i have one friend here, two if you count my grown daughter.

i wish i had better scenery to look at.  that's about it.

There are about 600,000 people here.  Being somewhere with fewer people certainly has it's appeal.

I'm in a college town with a population of about 80K.  Not too big and not too small.  All it's missing is one or two special people and some decent mexican food.

I am in Plymouth, the place where the Pilgrim father's sailed from in the Mayflower to start the population of the US. A garrison town, that being one of the homes of the Royal Navy and various other military units. A town full of history and plenty to do, it also hosting various events such as the classic yacht rally and the formula one power boat races plus others, always something happening.

The surroundings of the city are delightful, Moors and sea, Dartmoor behind and the sea in front.Plymouth has always been a poor city, and remains so, but that adds to the charm of the place. Myself, I am about ten miles from the moors and five minutes walk to the beach.

Yes, I like it here, it is'nt perfect, but it is good enough.

Right now i live at college in a small town but my home is a smallish town. That smallish town though is in a small county with 1 million people. And really that county is a part of the Washington Metropolitan Area with 5.2 million people in it. i like it, a lot of stuff to do and a lot of people to do it with.

...i didn't mean it that way, get your minds out of the gutter.

I live in a small town of 10,000 people. It has cheap real estate, good air, and hardly any traffic.

I tend to be of the belief that you can be happy wherever you are, and every place has its upsides and downsides.

I have to drive 60 miles to get sushi, and 80 miles to go to Home Depot, but I also had no locks on my doors or windows the first 5 years I lived here, have very nice neighbors, and anything I can't find here - I can order online.

After living in Europe for the last 23 years, i am grateful to be living in a central coast beach town in California, half a block from the beach, where people actually follow the traffic laws.  The population is 183,000 and i love the casual beach town atmosphere.  At night i can hear the waves breaking because the weather is usually so mild that the windows can stay open even in winter.  i apologize to those of you who are freezing your tushies off right now, but this just seemed like the right place to brag about the balmy weather!

I'm in Myrtle Beach, S.C. it's spread out about 30-40 miles long along the ocean about 275,000 population which goes up and down with the seasons.
I moved here from New Hampshire to get away from the high housing costs and frigid winters.
It'll be 65 I think tommorow here!
And yesterday as I got into my car there was a green sheen of pollen all over it!
I love it here, 3,200 restaurants, 110 golf courses, miles and miles of sandy beaches.
And they're opening a brandnew 400 acres Hard Rock theme park next month!
So we'll have top tier music groups comming here to play.

A bit bigger would be nice, but since we're vastly growing that should take care of itself.

I learned early on that I love being NEAR big cities- not actually in them so I can escape to some quiet and space, but close enough that ice cream won't melt by the time I get home.  I'm a city kinda gal, I like my variety, I like knowing if I want to grab a personalized cake at 11 pm on a Wednesday night I'll have a few options for it.  I need concerts and organizations and buzz.

And I need to be able to go away from it fairly easily when I want.

I'm in Manchester; aka the Barbados of the North.

All I know is this: the kids who come to the University from Southern England are walking around in t-shirts with the slogan 'born in the South, live in the North, die in the North' in no time.

'Home of industrialisation, trade unions, flat caps; and Nietzsche quoted Manchester as being the threat to European culture due it's commercial heart; moreover, Engels based his 'Condition of the English Working Class' on Manchester; and for good measure, Alexis de Tocqueville wasn't particularly enamoured with the place - that's the French for you: give the fuckers a roof over their heads and they're moaning about the architecture.

The place I live is not too bad; not too small, not big at all; most of the population though is Amish...I would say probably 95%.
Before moving here, I used to live in this little ole town in Texas, population was about ohhh....150 maybe, including newborns [8D]...and yes, I miss it like hell...the small town mentality, the whole works.
This place is not too bad though, it's small enough to suit me and it's got the same kind of mentality that the town in Texas had...a don't fuck with me kind of thing.

I have noidea what the population is here. I like it, I suppose.  Not that I get out much (thanks to my workschedule)  I used to live in a smalltown in TN, just outside Nashville.  LOVED it there..small town pluses, but close enough to Nashvegas that I could get my big-city fix when needed...

we live on our houseboat that is parked at a marina in a small city of about 110.000.
Today the sun is shining and the water is still. It is the middle of our summer now. We sit on the deck in the evenings and watch the sunset and the boats come and go in the harbour. Its a beautiful place to live in any weather though, always changing. We are together and there is nowhere else we would want to be! it is great to be alive!!!

I live 17 miles out of town on ten acres. Lots of coyotes, possums, coons and other critters, not to mention my own huge population of cats. Nothing out here cept a neighbor or two, my adult ums that live in the driveway and nature.

I rather like it but it can be rough going. When the dirt road ices up, you are stuck back here, when the well freezes you better have extra water on hand and when the wild fires start, you better pray it doesn't come your way.

But I've lived out here twenty years and I am rather fond of my backwoods lifestyle. No locks on any of the doors or windows and it's not unusual to hear gunshots when the Um takes down a critter eating my catfood or my pigeons.

I live in a smaller city with about 35,000 people.  The county has about 90,000 people.  It's a nice town, and it has a lot of amenities.  It's cheap to live here, and it's a famous town because of the national park and the history.  It's beautiful here, I live in the middle of the Ouachita mountains.  The Ozarks and the Ouachita are the only mountain chain between the Appalchians and the Rockies.  The chance for outdoor activities are everywhere.  Hunting, fishing, hiking, you name it.  There is even a diamond mine that is open to the public two hours from here.  It's the only one in the world.   

I like a lot of the things about it, but I often yearn to leave here.  I have several times, but I end up coming back.  I think the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence where ever you live, but home is where you make it.  (Two cliches in one sentence, by God!)[:D]

cleveland ohio, population just under 475k according to city info.  lived here all my life and i like it here for the most part.  no place is perfect.

We live in a river valley of about 7,000 people (small compared to where I used to live).  He and Alandra moved here with the kids in August and I moved in during December. 

We all love living here.  It is absolutely beautiful; on the drive home tonight, I saw two deer up on the hillside.
