An interesting- and complementary- question would be about the motivations of individuals who subscribe to the dogma of contemporary humanist thought. [:D] Sigh. As a dreaded secular humanist I'd love to also delve into this discussion. Why would anyone (like me for example) look at factual based science and the possibility of higher social and moral reasoning within humans as a blueprint for a lifestyle? Just seems to me that I'd rather examine my own moral and ethical responsiblities within this life and try to fullfill what I see is my responsiblities rather than draw on someone elses SOCIALLY CONSTRUCTED ideas. Everything is made up, however we can make observations and develop our own moral compasses. I'm also a horrible moral relativists.... if I weren't I couldn't live with the guilt of the sexual deviance I so thouroughly enjoy (disregard any spelling errors.. I'm hopeless at spelling).

Sounds good to me. That's what I've been doing, basically. Not that I'm secular, but my beliefs are in line with my chosen values, so it's a moot point in that context.

whew... what a relief. I really take my cues about heaven and hell from Mark Twain. I mean, as per his logic, do we really want to go to a heaven, sit on clouds playing harps, and listen to the singing of peole who can't even sing in church here on earth? I'm going to hell where I'm going to play poker and drink beer all night -- now doesn't that sound like more fun?

It's based on a whole series of badly written science fiction novels. There is underlying, largely Nietzschen philosophy, which I don't really buy. There is also a very elaborate code of conduct for slaves, which does interest me: how they should talk, how they should kneel, how they should serve food and drink, etc. Just google Gor, and you'll find almost all of what you could want. It's certainly easier than reading the books.
