Makes great affordable strobe units at great prices...
(Id say cheap, but cheap makes it sound like bad quality)

I love all this information. Such generous sharing from some talented photographers.

I love to see Art.

"If there are any tricks or suggestions in dealing with focusing, I'd love to hear them.  However, due to my eye problems, I think getting one of the wholly-manual lenses discussed above, while possibly amazing for portrait and nude work, is not going to be an option for me. "

Check out this photo below...
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/ND40/ZD40VF.gif

This is a diagram of the D-40's Viewfinder.  Using the multi-area focus brackets, select which area that you would like the camera to use for spot focusing.  Once that is selected, look for the focus indicator on the bottom left side of the viewfinder screen.  If the light is green, it's perfectly in focus.  If it's flickering, it's almost there.  If it's not lit, it's not focused at all.  Keep in mind that you will only have proper focus indication if the lens aperture is f/5.6 or faster.

I've got crummy eyesight too... it's the only way I get decent shots without firing blind ;)

To diffuse the glare from a swivel-head  flash, a good trick is to stick a white pantyhose over it. Just make sure it is white though.

A tri-pod is another thing good to have. I own several which range from close to 6 feet down to 8 inches.
Also you can pick up automatic remote flashes for about $20 bucks at any Ritz camera. They make for good angled lighted shots rather than static, straight on shots.

Seems like you've been given some great information here....just have lots of fun, try different techniques, remember what works (and what YOU like) , and learn from what you don't. Happy flashing !  :)

Yea, all of this has been very helpful.  This Friday I'm going to get an opportunity for a good photoshoot with my two girls (it's my Bday, so they promised not to grump *smirk*).  I got an SB600 flash as a present as well as a flash-diffuser for it, so I think I'll be able to get a really good shoot in to try some different things.  The cats just don't sit still long enough :)  I'll try to post up some things for comment/critique.

attention pale people; don't take nude shots in bright sun light. Trust me. i love my milky skin, even my freckled shoulders, goes well with the red hair. tried a picture like this, and well, i just looked like a ghost lost in the world of the living... the squinting eyes didn't help either.

really glad i found this postme and a certain CM friend were planning to get together this very day to have fun with her new camera, thanks for all the ideas-

A warming filter helps A LOT with pale skinned people from what I've noticed so far.  My girl is very pale (as you can see from her picture) and becomes ghostly in direct light.  A warming filter made it so much richer.

Also a diffuser on the flash is a good idea too, if not making sure to bounce it.

When it comes to nude photography, I actually prefer balck and white over color prints. Gives it more artistic value for me.

Generally, when I was still using a point and shoot, I would shoot in color and convert in software if I wanted B&W.  I prefer color, but I want really VIVID color, almost sureal.

There are a couple of producers of adult video/photos here in Madison.  Nothing specific to medical, but they generally shoot whatever type of a scene comes up.

Based on the session I did this past Friday, I do have to agree.  It's 95% about lighting, about 1% crawling around to get the perfect shot (easier with a digital when you can shoot for "free") and about 4% luck. :)

My color shots did not come out well - everything has too much of an orange glow to it.  I think it's in part due to the warming filter I put on the lense, but also my general lighting just wasn't great, because the orangness disappears when I get some good lighting.  However, with some very minor touchups in photoshop, I can get some really vivid results that I'm pretty happy with for a first attempt.  If I greyscale them, they actually really really look great with minimal post-processing except maybe some minor contrast adjustments.

I hope to have a few of my first attemtps up in the next day or two for critique and comment.

You could try to boost the saturation with imaging software. Pe4rsonally, I dislike too vivid colours, so I tend to do the opposite. Also, I'd recommend getting a 50mm f/1.8 lense if you can afford it. You'll be less dependent on the flash and it greatly increases the opportunities to play with your field of depth.

Greetings all.  Just a few updates.

As I mentioned, I did my big birthday photoshoot last Friday.  Both my girls enjoyed it immensely as did I.

I ran into a couple snafus, though right from the git-go, so here's a list of what I encountered and some thoughts.  Take from them what you will; hopefully people will find some of them useful.
  1. I purchased some inexpensive black sheets to hang up as backdrops.  The girls promptly tore them down in all their attentions on each other, so many of the shots have crappy backgrounds, including the awful wood paneling in the office/playroom where we shot.  Next time I'll have to secure them better, and tie up the girls to keep them from rolling around so much :).  Also, twin-sized sheets (which were on sale for $2) aren't really big enough, so either I need to pin/sew them toghether or look at getting bigger ones.  On the plus side, the shots where the black sheet is in view really look great.
  2. I had an awful awful orange tone on everything.  Nothing I fiddled with on the camera would make it go away.  I thought it was the warming filter (812) I had on, but taking it off resulted in the same tones.  I thought it was just bad lighting, but that seemed odd as nothing seemed at all orange normally.  When I did some really good closeups with a lot of lighting/flash, then the orange disappeared, but otherwise it tinted everything.  I FINALLY figured out what the problem was last night - I had a white-balance setting skewed way off deep in some menu on the camera.  The next shoot will be more representative.
  3. On the plus side, if I convert the pics to B&W, the orange tint is irrelevant and it looks great!
  4. I might be able to remove the orange in post, but it does make the skintones pretty white/pale, and I dont' have the patience for endless fiddling in photoshop (yet), but I hopefully can do some things with some auto settings.
  5. I have the18-55 kit lens and a 55-200 second lens.  I shot most everything with the 55-200, but it doesn't really work well in the close quarters of an intimate shoot and home office, because the minimum focus distance is a couple feet at least.  It has a great flexability to go from wide to tight in an instant, but getting close in there doesn't work well.  The 18-55 is completely the opposite, I can get fairly close physically, but couldn't pull back well and the depth of field wasn't great either.  There is an 18-200 available (around $600) that could be a great one-lens solution for this kind of shoot to provide the most flexability in an instant.
  6. I did get an SB600 flash and a diffuser for it.  It helps a lot to fill in things.  I kept the flash tilted at a 45-degree angle to the camera lens for the duration, and kept the diffuser on it the whole time as well.
  7. I got a copy of Adobe Lightroom to play with as a workflow manager.  In my first attempts I found it very useful.  To fully take advantage of it, I'm going to start shooting in RAW instead of HQ JPG from now on.
  8. Manual focusing will just not work for me.  When I did find focus, the results were blurry because of my bad eye.  Using the focus indicator didn't help much because often the action was just too rapid for me to get it zeroed in time.  I had to go back to AF.  If I want to get a fixed-length lens like recommended above, it will have to be one that will auto-focus.  That would likely require me to replace the D40 body with a different one or hope someone comes out with an AF-S lens that will fit.  I can get a D80 for around $700-$800, so that might be an option if I sell the D40.  That's a ways off right now.
  9. I don't normally like B&W, however I found converting to greyscale results in pictures that are much more forgiving, or at least that I'm much more willing to forgive.  My goal is still to concentrate on color.
  10. It was a blast!  And my girls had so much fun too; within moments they completely forgot I was there.  That was my hope - I really wanted this to be a much more candid shoot than a posed one.  I think it adds a lot more energy to it.
In any case.  As promised, here are a few select photos from the shoot.  I really would appreciate constructive feedback and comments.  Put them in this thread for others to learn from, rather than email.  I'm only going to leave the photos up for a couple of weeks, though.  So if this thread is read later, the link may no longer work.

Enjoy and I look forward to your thoughts.
