Adjusting white balance will definately take out the orange.
The images are good - although the subject is a little too 'cold' for me - a bit empty.  But that may simply be your preference however because they are good shots.
I may email you on the other side though if that is ok - I have a suggestion.

Wow, I am impressed, a photography thread on CM, and with so much good information too. I do agree with most here, the 'on board' flash is awful, I tend not to use it if I can help it as I dislike flash photography, but that maybe due to myself as a mostly land scape photographer.

I have in the past used flash though, but for a strange kind of photography, that of pot hole photography and the techniques learned there might be of interest, but am not sure how it would work on digital, perhaps some experimentation is needed. Anyway, the technique was as follows: The camera hotshoe was fitted with a flash on a cable, so away from the lens.This flash was covered with a red geletine filter. Dotted about my subject were electronic flash units fitted with slave units, even out of visual sight, as light bounces. The flash units were set up as per their guide number. When I was happy I clicked the shutter, thus firing the flash, a red flash which instantaneously triggered the white light flashes via the slave units, and there revealing a photograph as if it were in daylight.

Am thinking source old flashes from the film era and try the slave unit approach to simulate studio flash, but on a smaller scale, use the flash guide number to work out the distance from subject with the cheaper single outlet units.

Like I said, not sure how it will work, the red gelatine method, but a remote flash from the hotshoe could be used as a trigger for carefully placed remote slave flashes. I get the feeling it will not work with my DSLR as mine is an infra red camera, and does pick up heat as well, a curious thing to see a photographic representation of heat above a flame.

I also am a SLR user and own a Nikon D70 equipped with a Sigma  18-50 and a  Tamron 55-200, both these lenses are good, though I do agree about using prime lenses from the past and myself, I do seek them.

My aim is to do the kind of photography I have always seemed to miss out on, that of fantasy portraiture and nude, a subject where knowledge of lighting is of high importance and there the necessity to learn that which I lack, artificial lighting, something which should be easier as artificial lighting is one, one can control.

The style of photography I tend to pursue is what I call etheral photography, a sort of situation with lots of diffusion and grain and if I use colour, then it tends to be vivid as if under a bright after storm sun, to produce a dream like quality. But really, what direction a photograph may take is purely dependant on the mood at the time and what I see by previsualisation. A camera to me, just a tool to make art.

Good luck to the OP, may you find photography richly rewarding, but beware, it can be addictive.

edited to add, filters, the 'cokin' system is versatile and affordable, especially from places like ebay

Does anyone know of a digital camera with a remote, that is affordable. I would prefer a point and shoot for ease over an SLR, not that i mind SLR's but not looking to get into a whole set up yet. I have used manual 35mm SLR's for years. Just want something easy. Timer is no good cause it is too distracting to hop in and out of a sceen to push the button, and I want something that you can leave on a tripod and push a remote button to take a pic.  I appreciate any help or info. Spending range is around $500 or a little more.

The D40 has a $13 remote for it and other Nikon cameras (SLRs).  Not sure if it works with other Nikon P&S cameras though.

If you have experience of SLR, perhaps the prosumer cameras may be of interest to you, they give similar capabilities as the SLR, without the need for an interchangeable lens, plus they are much smaller and therefore more portable. The downside as I see it, is the viewfinder relays a digital image as opposed to a real image as per SLR. You wish to use it for remote release, then the viewfinder disadvantage is not that much of a problem for you and they have an image sensor the size of a compact but a little better quality, perhaps a good midrange position to be.

There are many worth a mention, but the Fuji  Finepix range are very good and popular.

Hi guys,

Found the photography thread so I thought I'd join in.

I've been something of a hobbyist in photography for a while but moving to digital has really opened things up for me. It's not about instant gratification as much as it's about being able to make changes on the fly and not having to wait forthings to develop to find that you would have made adjustments if you could.

Anyhow, I got myself a Canon Rebel XT but then did the whole ebay saw and upgraded to the new Canon 40D which is just terrific. Most of my photos have been in portraiture, nature and landscapes so I'm just starting out on the Nude & fetish photography front. In fact, I showed some of my existing style work to a friend who's offered me the use of his space in NJ.

If anyone wants to kick up a conversation and offer up thoughts about photography in general or even ideas for interesting work I'd be happy to join in the discussion.

I feel like such an under achiever. I do all my and Fox's photography with a 7mp Olympus point and shoot. I have never tried a SLR digital, though I do have one for film that I play with on occasion. My setup consists of a small flood light, a tripod and various props and things to make shadows and such.  That and a decent knowledge of photoshop

Interesting stuff.

On the website front there are two very useful sites for info.
On forum site I use most is called dpreview.com
Lots of info on every new camera out there including reviews and a forum where users get together to share info (and sometimes coupon codes too).

The other site is more of a reference for quality of lenses by manufacturer. It's called fredmiranda.com

For me the best book for technical stuff is the Idiots guide to photography. Then the how to photograph people covers all the lighting and posing.

OK, I can one up you there. :)

I'd started out with a number of John Hedgecoe's books, many readily available at Barnes & Nobles.

The other thing I did was spend years collecting American Photo magazines. When I was lucky B&N would actually have the european versions which weren't censored the same way. (There's always the stock photo magazines but those won't have much in the BDSM front).

Anyhow, I became an avid fan of works by Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Patrick Demarchelier, Mapplethorpe & Ellen Von Unwerth. Somehow having been affected by all of this work I've found that I gravitate toward art over simple porn you'd find in a playboy or penthouse. I didn't realize this so much until friends tried to start sharing personal material with me. What I found was that the taboo nature of nude photography made most people think that crotch shots were sooo cool. I suppose that I've been somewhat desensitized when it comes to sexuality as compared to most folks so so me it became more about art and expression.

I realize that this might seem sort of cliche but I believe that it's probably very ordinary for people who devote a certain amount of energy to an endeavor to have something of a different perspective on life.

Anyway, do some google search on these folks and I think you'll find some very impressive work (many of you might want to just skip to Helmut Newton). ;)

As others have said, the on camera flash is pretty much guaranteed to ruin any photo you take with it.  On the bright side, a set of lights, stands, and umbrellas can be had pretty inexpensively and do the job pretty well.  Granted, continuous lighting isn't very bright and so it can be a challenge between shutter speeds, aperatures, and ISO, but it can be done on a budget and works.  I have two umbrellas, 3 reflectors and I use various other lights around the house for a hairlight, backdrop lighting, and whatnot.  It's ghetto but does the job.  Strobes are where it's at, but I didn't want to shell out the money. 

On the lenses, big aperatures are what get you that nice depth of field (background out of focus, subject in focus).  If you have the space, a nice 200mm lens is excellent for this sort of work because it compresses the depth of field, minimizing the look of pores, bumps, and whatnot.  It seems kind of counter-intuitive to take a "close up" from 30 feet away, but it does work out nicely.  I like my Canon L glass for this, 70-200mm, f2.8.  But that was a pricey lens.

Remember that while it is true that you can "fix anything in photoshop", it's WAY WAY faster to just take the picture right the first time.  So yes, have your subject wear appropriate makeup, etc.  Cover blemishes as desired with makeup, not photoshop.  Use hair product ot make the hair shiney, etc.

Posing the model(s) was always the hardest for me.  I quickly learned that the line, "OK, now look sexy" was going to get me nasty looks, not sexy ones *laughs*.  The best trick I heard is that the model will naturally respond to the photographer.  You want her to smile... smile at her.  Use music and ambience to set the mood. 

Now that you've done a great job getting the photo, comes post-process.  Depending on the look you're going for, that can be a lot of work.  I was doing glamour photography (you know, where every subject is utterly flawless).  Since no actual human looks like that, there was a ton of post processing done.  Typical shots would have 20-80 layers in photoshop to tweak/tune/nudge/finesse individual sections of the photo.  Lest someone suggest this is "cheating", just remember you probably haven't seen an unprocessed photo of anyone in mass media in the last 20 years.  Once you know what to look for, it's easy to see it.  *laughs*  Open up any magazine and find the first add with a close-up of a woman's face.  Look very closely at her complexion.  Now ask yourself, when was the last time you saw a complexion that perfect on ANY living human, even an infant.

Finally, for serious hardcopy, you're going to need to invest in both screen and printer calibration software.  Skin tones are very complex and even the tiniest deviations can take a "healthy tan" and turn it into dayglow orange or sickly green.  I got just plain sick and tired of doing my post process, running the print, and having the printout look nothing like what was on the screen.  Calibrating my monitor and printer solved that problem handily.  If you're having someone else do the prints, then you can assume their hardware is calibrated.  Get it's color profile from them.  Then calibrate your screen.
