*gives you lots of hugs*

ADHD is a real pain in the ass. Esp. The harder school gets.

Have you tried 5-HTP? It is an herbal suppliment. It helps to produce more serotonin nautrally. It helps slow down the racing thoughts of those with ADD/ADHD.

It has helped us a lot.

*more hugs*

i am going to play devils advocate here. ADHD is a powerful thing, sometimes controlled by medication, sometimes not. What i see here is a bad road for you to be heading down. You are fighting for your son, but you may be fighting an affliction that is more powerful than he is. And, dear lady, if HE cannot control it, you cannot either. Your words "if i can get him safely..." and "I have my work cut out for me." are so much the words of a loving mom, but also the words of one who is taking too much onto her shoulders by herself.

While i understand your reluctance to go the route of medications perhaps you might want to check into that a bit further? My understanding is the military will not accept someone who is on medication, not one who has been on them in the past.  Either way, there are awesome therapists out there who are trained in behavior modification and really benefit ADD/ADHD kids.

Hun I can comisserate with having to drop classes. With my cold I had, and darn BH I had to drop 2 of mine.

It sucks ass.. but at least they can be re-taken. *many hugs*

I know what really helped us get over the cold hump was dabbing on peppermint oil on the temples, nodes, and back of the neck.

It cleared out so much. *give ya'll Gwynnie hugs*

Geez! Thank you for reminding me Holly!

Hejira, My son's neurosurgeon is just across the alley from you. It would be a bit of a drive, but he is one of the top 3 in the US When it comes to ADD/ADHD. He did wonders for us. Dr. Finkle is just an awesome awesome man. ~ He was my migraine Doc too. I am sure if you let him know your concerns... he will work with you.

I have ADHD, and unfortunately I was prescribed Ritalin SR, because I waited far too long to seek any help for it, so the homeopathics just didn't work enough for me, but before I gave in to taking the RX, my physician had me on 5-HTP and GABA combined, and even though it wasn't quite enough, it definitely had a calming effect and boosted my mood. It just didn't take care of my cycling racing thoughts, but I really believe if I dealt with this at your son'e age hejira, I would not have needed to take anything stronger. My physician agrees as well. I would definitely try it, and even if someone does not have ADHD, there are still very beneficial properties in these enzymes. This is the one that I took.

Hi hejira, I took them together per the doc's instruction.  They are not just used as and ADHD alternative, people coming off of certain prescriptions, like xanax, use them for withdrawal symptoms, and they are used also just for general stress and anxiety in anyone. They are pretty well known though for the 1st attempt for ADHD before having to go the RX  route. I really did feel noticeably calmer and less edgy, like I said, it just didn't really slow my racing thoughts, but I waited til I was almost 40 because well...who wants to admit they think they have something that can be so stigmatized? I am so glad that you are being so proactive, my parents always just thought I was full of energy. Ha, not quite.   In fairness though, I think this is seen as more of a boy's issue than a girl's.

Thanks Aynne, and Gwyn. I've ordered the two suppliments. Keep your fingers crossed. I already have him taking about 1200mg of fish oils daily, so I hope this helps as well.

That's great hejira. Fish oil is amazing too, for all kinds of things. I will send you positive thoughts. I am sure it will have a positive effect. Hopefully a really noticeable one. Trust me, as someone that deals with the kind of uncontrollable effects of ADHD, he really doesn't want to feel this way, it is awful, and without adult coping skills, it is really overwhelming sometimes. Not trying to get him a free pass, I am just relating my feelings when I was that age. Just overwhelmed, and I dealt with it by acting out, and being a not good kid sometimes.

well said, Aynne. I wish someone was around to say that to our parents when we were that age...

Thanks Holly.  Me too, when we were kids/teens it wasn't prevelant  then, or maybe it was, but just not diagnosed, I don't know. The awful part is a lot of those (myself included) self medicated for long periods of time and that is so bad. Anything to quiet the ranting you know? I don't think about it all that much because when I reflect on some of the really poor choices I have made in my life I get angry and I wonder what if someone had noticed something when I was young would things have been different and I don't want to go through life blaming my parents or anyone else, that accomplishes nothing.  Hejira's son is lucky to have her
