quote:
ORIGINAL: trappedinamuseum I hate it when my mother calls me and tells me that my sister (who has Downs) was attacked by another girl (who also has Downs) at the group home she lives in, and broke my sister's collarbone. My parents are not willing to press charges. I understand that this girl is mentally disabled, but my sister is as well, and didn't deserve to be assaulted. This girl is a danger to herself and others. She knocked my sister to the ground, and could have done much worse damage. She could have been killed. And yet, she gets away scot free because she is mentally disabled. How am I supposed to feel about this? pressing charges would probably solve nothing. Your sister does not understand the assault, so i wounder if the other girl does as well? Perhaps your parents need to talk to the administrators of the group home and ask one simple question: What are you going to do to prevent this from reoccurring? It is not the other girl that is responsible, in my mind. Rather it is the staff that failed to prevent the attack in the first place. ETA...it is not my place to say this...but perhaps this girl does not belong in a group home setting.
