Daddysredhead -> RE: I hate it when........ (9/14/2008 10:35:01 PM)

I hate it that Thing 2 and I spent four hours at the ER tonight and found out that my wild child has soft tissue damage/swelling, (from doing what - we are not certain, but knowing Thing 2, it could've been almost anything), and is now in an air cast and on crutches.  I also hate that we have to go to the ortho just to be sure nothing more is wrong.  Oh and another thing... I hate that I have to get up and go to work in the morning because I'd rather stay home and snuggle with the Things.

On a totally different tangent, I hate that my jaw has been aching since last night's "office visit" with the Daddy Bear.  I could just hear that conversation with the dentist.

"Red, when did the TMJ type pain start?"
"Um, about the time I was canoodling with my guy the other night."
"What does canoodling have to do with... ?  Oh..."
"Yeah, doc..."  [8|]

*geez, I just can't win*
*giggles anyway*

I hate that nobody lives close enough for me to go to them and just hold them, cry with them, and tell them that I love them.

I hate it that when you wish for an exciting call on the ambulance, someone has to pay the price.  My partner & I were saying that we needed a "good call" instead of the usual BS calls.  At 4:30pm on Sat. we were dispatched along w/several other units to a full code (cardiac arrest). The patient was a 45 year old man who was working contruction down the road from my day job. He was up in the ceiling in a vent and had a heart attack.  His coworkers didn't know he was in trouble, just thought he was working. After about 20 minutes someone went to talk to him and found him unconscious and not breathing. It took us at least 15-20 minutes to get him out of the vent, doing CPR on ladders. The trip to the hospital took less than 5 minutes.  I drove the ambulance and all I could think about was that the man was down for so long I just had to get him to the hospital.  There were 2 paramedics and my partner working on him, but he was dead before we got him out. Asystole as soon as he was hooked up to our monitor all the way to the hospital.  The hospital pronounced him dead while we were there after working on him for another 15 minutes.  Damn shame. I hate that he was so young/had to die alone up in a hole in the ceiling ;(  I grieve for his family who thought they were going to see him walking thru the door that night but instead had to go kiss his cold cheek goodbye. [&o]

**Eta be careful what you wish for**

I drove to work this AM and when I passed that bldg. I just felt all those emotions I felt on Sat. rising to the surface again and when I walked in, I told my good friend who works the front desk what happened just to get it off my chest.  I went back down and apologized for starting the day on such a sad note.

love ya, sweetheart

BlackPhx -> RE: I hate it when........ (9/15/2008 7:14:04 AM)

HUGZ to you Potty, yeah it does suck it would have been a lot more fun I suspect if it was a kid ith his head caught in a fence or something..where there is no danger of death, just laughter as you free him.

Hey Red..be happy it as soft tissue damage and not something else. Better safe than sorry and an ER trip is a lot better when it is something simple.

poenkitten (hating she just took Master BACK the the frigging airport and now he is headed for Louisiana)

sirsholly -> RE: I hate it when........ (9/15/2008 7:53:20 AM)

Pots...i'm sorry.

wandersalone -> RE: I hate it when........ (9/15/2008 7:54:13 AM)

Potty I can't even begin to imagine how traumatic it was for you on saturday however I am sure that his loved ones would feel some comfort in knowing that their son, brother, husband, partner, father, uncle, friend etc etc was thought about and remembered by you.

Thankyou for not thinking of him as simply another case for you.

big special hugs from me.

VirginPotty -> RE: I hate it when........ (9/15/2008 8:18:45 AM)

Thank you, Wanders! Your note actually brought tears to my eyes.
I could never think of the patients as "just another patient".  When I train rookies for patient care I ALWAYS tell them to treat each & every pt w/respect (unless they're drunk/abusive then all bets are off :) and to NEVER call them by their 1st names. (Especially the homeless folks) Treat everyone w/respect and when we get a sick patient, always, always have someone attending to the families.  I thank God the family wasn't there to see him being pulled out, but his co-workers were and I believe that's why CPR was given, to make sure they knew we tried, we didn't just give up & pronounce him. Hopefully they took that to the family & it gave them some comfort to know that we cared.

wandersalone -> RE: I hate it when........ (9/15/2008 8:37:26 AM)

smiles...then we are even Pot as I had tears in my eyes reading your post and the emotion you felt for that young man.

I absolutely love what you have written about never calling a patient by their first name ..... it is those seemingly small things that can make a world of difference to someone, especially if they are used to being looked through or talked at for most of their life.

I kind of think maybe I have a crush on you now!

sirsholly -> RE: I hate it when........ (9/15/2008 8:40:09 AM)

Pots...his co-workers will tell the family how hard the first responders tried. Your efforts to save him will be made known to the family and be a comfort.

That is so true, Wanders! I HATE when I hear other crews go into the nursing homes and call the patient by their 1st name!  When I ask them their name, if they give me their 1st name only, I'll add a Mr./or Miss to it. We have a Men's homeless shelter in our 1st due/I stress to my crew the importance of calling them Mr. all the time. Just because they're on hard times doesn't mean disrespect them. That's when it's important to them to have some self respect.

That's what I'm hoping they said. It's hard enough losing someone you love w/o thinking no efforts were made to save them.  I was never as proud to be a part of the Fire Dept. as I was on Sat. Those guys are something else.
