I quit smoking in 1982 when there weren't really any options other than "cold turkey". But 2 1/2 weeks after I quit, I was run over by that little old lady & ended up getting morphine shots for the next 2 weeks. When I got home, it was another 2 months til I could get myself to the store. By that time, the worst of the withdrawal was over. I don't recommend this as a stop smoking method, but it worked for me. One other thing that did work for me was not substituting anything at all when I wanted a cigarette, I would say, "I want a cigarette. I don't want chocolate cake." My friends, God bless them, would argue with me when I would tell them I wanted a cigarette. I wasn't going to smoke one, but I surely did want one!! Acknowledging the craving for what it was really helped me a lot.
