I love it when I have a great meal!
When I went to San Francisco for Miyavi, I went to a restaurant there, in Japantown, which we just selected on spec. Oh, My Gods.
I found I was craving something with seaweed in it, and oysters. They had a selection of nabe, a dish with which I was not familiar. I told the waiter - oh, let me tell you about the waiter! Kawaii! He so gracefully and humbly received our admiration - I told him that I was craving seaweed. He said the oyster nabe already had seaweed, but they could put more.
Oyster nabe - theirs came in a big, black metal cauldron-like dish, and contained bean thread noodles (the transparent kind), a variety of greens, firm tofu, a soft-yoked egg, and lots of oysters. It came with a lemon-flavoured clear dipping juice or sauce on the side, which was a delicious compliment. It was perfection! The broth was flavourful, the ingredients cooked just right - not over or under cooked - even the bean thread noodles, which can be rubbery, were a perfect texture.
I caught air that a woman waiting tables in that small restaurant was the cook. I called her over when she came near, and asked her. I let her know that hers was one of the best meals I've ever had!
When I came up and got a business card, preparing to leave, the gorgeous waiter was happy to point out that they are open very late and when they close. This gave me some hope that he was flirting with me, too, as I thought he was probably primarily interested in a woman in our party much closer to his age :P
We have just about resolved to move the two of them up to Seattle. The cook can cook, and the young man can, well, just be here :) We'll do our best to shower them with all the forms of welcome we can muster.
