I love it that last Thursday night, I sent a company-wide email out, letting them know that this Friday was going to be my last day. Most of them do not know that I am being laid off, and I didn't tell them that in my email. (I have heard that there will be more to come, but I do not know who.) I just said that I have had a wonderful time working with them the past two years and that I am going to trying to go back to my first love, which is law.
I was gobsmacked by the outpouring of kindness and surprise that my news brought. Even some of our vendors and clients who came in the office today said that I will really be missed. I smiled and just said that everyone needs to follow their passion and that I was going to reclaim mine. They wished me the best and I got lots of hugs and handshakes.
It turns out that a lady who works for a different company in our building remembers me from years ago (5+, to be exact) when I helped work on her divorce and custody case. I always thought she looked familiar, and now I know why, she was a client at the firm I worked at. She hugged me and said that there were cases and clients that needed me the way she did years ago. I almost cried at her sweetness because I knew that she was sincere.
I may not have chosen the way in which I am going to leave my current job, but I feel like I have a greater purpose in this world, and that my first career love is where I need to return. I hope and pray that something turns up quickly and that it will be fulfilling. I was really happy when I found a job listing nearby and I went out on a limb and applied for it. They asked for my references within an hour of sending my resume, so I hope that is a good sign. Daddy and my dad were full of smiles when I got home and told them that news, even the Things said they hope it's the right job for me. (please God...)
I also love it when a company-wide email went out this morning, right after I got to work, saying that there would be a happy hour party Friday as my send-off. (What made me even *secretly* happier is that there were more replies to the happy hour email than there were to the company picnic that I am still coordinating, but won't be around to attend.)
Another big internal smile came this afternoon when a co-worker asked me to quietly help her draft a cover letter and proof her resume to send out this week. This is the same lady whom the owner always says is his eyes and ears, if not his right hand. He had the nerve to tell me last week that he never had to worry about her going anywhere because he knew that she would always be there because he couldn't function without her. This afternoon, she told me that she is so sick and tired of his crap that she didn't know what to do, and that it took my email, letting people know I was leaving, to give her the nudge to make a change to leave the place where she is so unbelievably miserable.
You just never know, do you?
