I take it that you have had experience at this type of work before. Are any of the people there Amish.

i think Pa is the Amish capitol of the country. There are a few families where i live.

i am not sure if they are Amish or Mennonite. I know they do not drive. Nor do they interact with us "English" folk.

But a sweet story...when i was married to my late husband we had a really bad rainstorm and the lower field turned to a mud bog thanks to the flooding creek. One of the horses got stuck in the mud, and of course the harder he tried to get out the deeper he went. Mick was on the tractor and i was with the horse, trying to keep a rope around him. An Amish buggy stopped on the road and two men ran down to help. It took all four of us to get the horse out. These men were up to their knees in mud but didn't seem to care. There were hardly any words spoken at all. They just dug right in and helped us. When it was over they shook Micks hand and left.

Sounds Amish or Old Mennonite then. And yes, that is something they'd do, without even thinking about it. I can't even begin to think of some of the things my friends have done just because they want to help, not because they're looking for recognition or payback. [;)]

they wouldn't talk to me though...just Mick. But it was amazing that they hopped right into a mud bog with no thought whatssoever. We offered to pay them for their time and effort but they wouldn't hear of it.

I live near the Amish Country, it is a nice area. We have lots of local Mennonite people also. I have a picture on my profile of several Mennonite couples watching a sunset. It is one of my favorite pictures.

HEY!!!  Those couples are looking kinda cosy. I thought public displays of affection were a no-no to the Plain People?

I think they were Mennonite, they are very lovey dovey and close when I see them.

LumusandtheLady -> RE: I love it when..... (12/4/2008 11:31:40 AM)

Nope, not between husbands and wives.

(Egads, those years as a Conservative Mennonite are coming in handy for something besides the usual....)  [:-]

Rain...did you wear the traditional Mennonite clothing?

LumusandtheLady -> RE: I love it when..... (12/4/2008 11:35:55 AM)

Yep, got pictures of it too.... Actually still have the cape dresses that i wear around the house since they're so comfy. I can still pass as a good Mennonite woman and confuse the hell outta people. [:D]

we go to a wonderful little Amish/Mennonite area in Ohio. I love the different shops...oak furniture ("Hey Mr AmishPerson...ya got any oak paddles?") a wonderful bakery, and a fabric shop that is to die for, as long as you do not mind buying all the fabric in black, navy or brown. I really embarrassed myself once when i asked if they had and wool in red or pruple. Um...if you are wondering...the anser was no.

LumusandtheLady -> RE: I love it when..... (12/4/2008 12:06:22 PM)

[:D]  Now, if you ask a Mennonite shop, the answer may very well be yes on the purple and possibly on the red, if you're not looking for something really bright. If you don't mind shopping via mail (yes, for fabric), I can put you in touch with some great people. It's how I ordered all my fabrics and got the best fabric possible - stuff you'd never find at JoAnn's or Hancocks!
