seems like drinking caffeine would be bad for your heart condition...

Termyn8or -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/18/2008 2:02:24 PM)

Let's get down to brass tacks. Why sweet ? Why does everything have to be sweet ?

I quit coffee, but since the 1980s I quit putting sugar in it. I lost my sweet tooth I guess, but seem to have kept all the rest. I believe you can change your taste, and get used to it. I also made iced tea with no sweetener at all in it because it is very hard to find in the stores. However I have no use for the caffiene so I don't drink any of it at all now. I haven't had a soda in decades and I don't miss it one bit.

It got to the point where if I grabbed the wrong coffee and it had sugar in it I would spit it out. I can literally smell the sugar in an unopened 2 liter of Pepsi or Coke. Back when I drank such things, I preferred RC Cola because it was much less sweet.

I don't understand peoples' need to sweeten everything. There are so many flavors out there, why is sweetness so exhalted ? I like food, I eat steaks with nothing on them, chicken I spice up heavily, but not with salt.

Salt is another thing. If you get unrefined salt it is one of the best things for you, and even if you could get pure sodium chloride it would be good for you. But the anti-clumping agant they put in table salt makes it a slow poison. It does not metabolise properly in the body and forms compunds that clog you up.

Now sugar is similar. What is in the sugar bowl is a chemical, refined in much the same way as cocaine. Ingesting too much and not getting enough chromium and vanadium in your diet WILL cause diabetes. But then if you eat table salt, it may inhibit your body's ability to properly metabolise other minerals, so it might be a waste of time.

Interesting to note, it is processed into molasses, which has a pretty good content of chromium and vanadium, then it is processed into dark and light brown sugar, which has traces of chromium and vanadium, these were not put there by Man, but they were taken out by Man. By the time it reaches your sugar bowl is has absolutley no nutritional value, and what used to be in it, trace minerals which your body needs to properly metabolise it are all gone. It is a chemical now.

There are alot of things that are not what they used to be. For example monosodium glutimate. It used to be made from kelp, but no more. Kelp grows in the sea, and the MSG made therefrom was no doubt rich in minerals, but no more. They have a new and improved way.

Yes they have a new and improved way, among many others to get us sick. Olestra is a perfect example. You could eat otherwise a healthy diet, rich in minerals and everything a body needs. But olestra wipes it out.

What people do not understand is that the digestive process takes alot longer than you think. It takes days, and if your metabolism is sped up to the point it does not, you will have troubles. It takes time for your body to absorb all that. Olestra wipes it out.

But back to the point, I do not understand why people are infatuated with sweetness. I mean I used to put vinegar in spaghetti sauce, and that is back before I quit sugar ! Some people put sugar in it ! Why ?

People are conditioned. And I think many perpetuate the problem giving their kids sweets, some even would put karo syrup in the bottle for them. If we break the cycle of addiction, and that is what it is, this all becomes a non-issue. If we have no need for it, it can be as poisonous as it wants.

Actually, Karo Syrup is added to bottles of formula for its laxative effect. It seems that most formulas, which are "cow's milk" based and have added iron, constipate the infants.  Instant solution?  Karo Syrup!  (Not saying that might not also have a future effect on desire for sweet flavors.)
Better solution...breast feed.  I also never gave Mine baby food.  Other than plain baby cereals, they ate from the table from the time they could start reaching for more than My breast.  I just introduced healthy table foods at the logical times.  Things like mashed carrots, natural applesauce, plain boiled chicken, etc. to start, but not broccoli or pot roast and beef gravy until they were older.   It just takes a little common sense.
We are the only species who never weans ourselves.  Milk is actually an unecessary part of the human diet.
I have no artifical sweeteners in My household.  I prefer My sugar in various forms from the cane or the bee hive.  Fruit is pretty good too!

High fructose corn syrup: here's my pet peeve. That junk is everywhere! They even put in bread, for crying out loud!

In Europe, sodas are sweetened with sugar, but here in the US, they use corn syrup, which is much more fattening. And cheaper, obviously... Everything's gotta be cheap... Morality of the story: don't drink sodas. It works as an occasional treat (god knows I LOVE Coca Cola, the original formula).

It's taking me a while to get accustomed to all this... thankfully, I enjoy cooking. Though I'm not very good at it :-) .

Green Iced tea or herbal Iced tea are my drinks of choice.

I stay away from sodas. all those preservitives and crap.. and gobs of sugar. No thanks.

I have my sippy cup ( large flip top that has the oz. and ml. marked on it so I know my intake. ) and I just refill it as needed from the big jug o tea in the fridge. I use about 1 cup of sugar for a galon of tea. I go through about a galon of green tea a day. ( still a hell of a lot less calories then soda ) and about a liter of water a day. Maybe some grapefruit juice.

My buddy goes through about 20 cans of soda a day or more. I am gonna wean him off of the sodas..

Actually, my mom breast fed me and she still had to give me karo syrup for constipation...I've always had trouble with constipation though, even as a new born. Started taking laxatives and suppositories as a small child...started abusing laxatives at 11 years old...after a good 11 years or so of abusing them, I had chronic diarrhea 5-6 times a day...or even more...LOL lasted 6 months or so...now I'm back to "normal" and can't go anymore LOL have to take Colace everyday. *sighs*

Termyn8or -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/18/2008 10:17:50 PM)

doll, you might want to post your diet, a week's worth of it. Something may be found that way.

Actually every time I say that people do not do it, so any advice is limited to more general advice, there is no way to get specific.

All I can say is this for that problem, it is probably in what you eat. That is controlled by your eating habits. Those have been forming since birth.

Now if business is uneasy in the backside (I do have a way with words) there is not enough water content there. There are misconceptions on what people should eat. You may think to eat very juicy fruits and vegetables, but that might not be the cure. The reason :

You have to realize that over 80% of our food is water. I mean the toughest posk chop you ever ate was 80% water. The water is held in cells partly by albumen. Albumen is one of the things that give flesh it's form. If you have meat that you can eat that is rare, great, because when you overcook it the fibers of the albumen shrink and make the meat tough, but they are doing so by actually compressing the water in the cells of the meat.

Now most people would assume that some really wet type veggies or fruits would help, but this might not be so if you have a normal metabolism. This is because when you eat something juicy, such as a watermelon, the water from it is absorbed quickly in the upper digestive tract, it does not make it down there.

Ironiclly, something like a tough pork chop will be absorbed more slowly, releasing it's water lower (later) in the large intestine, that is if you're lucky.

If you're Jewish or Moslem, or anyone who doesn't eat pork, maybe get a corned beef and roast it instead of boiling it. Meat that you need to use a knife on.

Mail me if you want more, this is getting close to a hijack. I put it out there because someone else might be interested, but to go any further I need more details.

Now watch someone "blow my wig off" by telling me there is sugar or maybe even aspartame in corned beef.

Studies show some adverse effects with aspartame but other studies show no effects at all.

Well, maybe they aren't studying in the right places?

I don't want to see the product banned, I'm not a "pro-ban" anything kind of gal. But I do know from personal experience that the product does have its problems. I have a very severe reaction to aspartame...and it has been well documented by the several hospitals that I have been treated at. I don't consume the product knowingly, and actually am quite dilligent about label reading to make sure. I ask at every picnic, potluck and buffet. Unfortunately though, mistakes can happen and I have on two occasions been inadvertently served Diet Cokes at restaurants. Both times I consumed no more than the first sip and both times I didn't make it through my meal before I needed emergency care. The first time my blood pressure was recorded at 240/180, the second time it was recorded at 248/172. Both times within half an hour of consuming the product I was in serious danger of having a stroke. On a third occasion I got a deep kiss from a gentleman who had just eaten a breath mint that was sweetened with aspartame. Same reaction.

If you choose to consume it and you have no problems with it, hey, more power to ya! But please don't make light of the reactions that some people have from the stuff. Those "headaches" that you say is the only documented reaction could be a life threatening emergency if they are a symptom that you are about to stroke.

Termyn8or -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/18/2008 11:21:46 PM)

Something just occurred to me. It was invented here and it took years of bribes and who knows to get it OKed, and then it took until 1983 to get it OKed in Europe.

Now we are going to ban it ?

What does that make us look like ?

People have similarly violent reactions to peanuts, though. Does that mean that they require similar scientific scrutiny?

kittinSol -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/19/2008 6:20:13 AM)

The entire food and drugs industry relies on aspartame; it's a manufactured product. The allergic reactions that other posters have described here are quite different from a peanut allergy.

The other difference is that whilst peanut allergy is well documented, with products containing peanuts clearly labelled with warnings, aspartame is passed as innocuous enough that it does not warrant any kind of warning to consumers.

The food industry is taking the piss; and thankfully, consumers are starting to wake up from their food-induced haze and taking action.

justheather -> RE: Hawaii Senator -ban aspartane (3/19/2008 6:23:24 AM)

Peanuts are not completely manufactured, chemical products..
(Yet.)
I have abstained from Nutrasweet for years and will not allow my UM(s) to ingest it, period.
Same goes for Splenda. "It's made from sugar!" What the hell does that even mean?
